There were attempts by Disney after Kingdom Hearts released and there was a pilot made, but Nomura didn't want it to just be some shoe in show and wanted it to be top notch quality so because of creative difference it was dropped. After KH2 was released there were rumors of a show that would tread the game's plot with a focus on Org 13 and the Nobodies such as Roxas, Namine, and Axel for a 2011 release. The rumors had more info on the supposed second show but the websites and forums have since been shutdown or the posts deleted from the databases of the websites.

I could see that for a spinoff but not a mainline title, especially since Disney does have some say in what goes into the series. Some are speculating based on the content of the secret ending that the next game chronologically in the series will be just that: a game focussed on traveling to various Enix/Nomura worlds, and that it will technically be a spinoff like DDD. (People are saying this because the trailer puts focus on Sora and Riku being close but not together, which was a big part of DDD.)

I'm fine with the next game being a spinoff as long as it did what DDD did: actually advance the story and give us more insight into the villains' plans.

KH3 would have been fine if it didn't have to resolve all the bullshit set-up by previous games. DDD being the most egregious offender. In its hearts of hearts KH3 wanted to be another Sora/Donald/Goofy adventure like KH1 but was weighed down by being the highly anticipated "conclusion" to a lengthy saga.

Seriously, DDD's story was a mistake. And I say that as someone who liked DDD at release and was even semi-entertained by how crazy the story got. But it set up so much shit that KH3 had to deal with. KH4 should hit the reset button.

Pirates has the benefit of being a unique exploring adventure (I enjoyed it but I know others didn’t) and working in hearts away from their bodies for the plot.

This is what I always tell people. It's not confusing, it's just dumb. They explain everything, even Mickey losing his damn shirt in 0.2, but it just happens to be a story where many of the elements can change on a whim depending on what Nomura was thinking that day. Just accept it as it comes, and enjoy that cheesey dialogue.

I really enjoyed the sailing personally but I can easily see why it would be painful to someone else.

If you bought DDD chances are you bought all the other handheld games. 3 spent a shit ton of time playing catchup for no reason when it literally could have spent all of it on satisfying payoff, and what wasn't catch up was setup for 4. Thus leaving all the catharsis for the past 13 years a rushed mess at the end of the game.

I would have been fully OK if the first KH game had replaced all the Disnep material with OC and been called FFXI/XII.

You have to speak for yourself here because there's a big draw for this series in particular in a number of ways and the first thing is figuring out what Disney characters we get to see interact with the main characters in the next game. It's been more than a decade of the formula of storytelling here that people have enjoyed even with its flaws because they enjoy the Disney sideshow. Its a fact that KH2 was memed for decades for Sora and the gang fucking off on a Disney adventure on the strict basis of "you are level 1 and to fight the antagonist of this game you need to be at least level 30 so go level up". It sucks but it also fun because it separates the moments of connecting with a Disney character to when stuff gets serious

No, that would ruin it. So in a JRPG you get to a town and find a single traffic cone blocking the other exit. Joe Jackoff comes running out of a house and explains Little Timmy is trapped in the local mines. You go into the mines and explore and get treasure and in the bottom of the mines you fight the Rock Monster and its master the Evil Mayor (gasp! the mayor was evil!) and rescue Little Timmy. Then there's a long cutscene where they thank you for rescuing Little Timmy and after the cutscene the traffic cone is gone and you can continue. You basically just lost 90 minutes of your life and game had padding. You don't know or care about Joe Jackoff or Little Timmy. It's just boring. Or maybe you do, maybe you get to town and through a series of side and main quests you learn about the Jackoff family and the deep history and lore behind the town and why the mayor is evil, etc. Either way you're going to waste hours of your time in Bumfuck Mining Town instead of the main quest. Kingdom Hearts gets around this by using known worlds and characters for its bumfuck filler towns. When I get to Agrabah, I already know Aladdin is the protagonist, I already know Jaffar is evil. I don't need to waste hours on backstory, I just jump right to the climax where I team up with Aladdin to fight Jaffar. Then I can hop over to Mount Olypus and it's the same thing, no need to waste time on backstory, I jump right to the climax where I fight Hades. Then I can hop over to Under the Sea and jump to the climax where I fight Ursula.

By using existing and known characters it skips the 40 hours of backstory needed to make the fights meaningful, while still having meaningful fights. You can see this more with the newer games where the OC do not steal character fights don't have any of the fun or memorability or emotional impact of the Disney villian fights. In short the game is popular because it can have the weight of a 100 hour game over the course of a 20 hour game.

I replayed KH1 and KH2 recently and KH1 Atlantica is much nicer than the internet would have you believe. KH2 Atlantica, on the other hand, is hell.

Frozen was a well designed world. It had a big underground dungeon, some cool vertical areas with multiple paths, agreat party member (the giant snow monster instead of the losers from the movie) cool unique enemies (ice dragons and Ninjas), a great final boss. The bad part of Frozen was the meddling basically meant SDG didn't influence the plot at all and shoehorned in musical number. But all of that stuff is skippable, mechanically the world is good.

Atlantica is the worst world both times. The first time from the terrible underwater controls and combat in 1, the second one from being the worst minigame world ever.

Disney will never sell the rights to characters they own, that's not what a multimedia empire DOES. And frankly, if Square did decide to dump KH I wouldn't be surprised if Disney can just find a new developer. One of the big reason that KH was made with Disney characters was BECAUSE of recognition. They wanted to make something as good as Mario 64 but lamented the fact that they didn't have anyone nearly as iconic. That was why they negotiated to use Mickey and the rest to begin with.

This is a pretty good question that might not have a completely satisfying answer. He probably did not retain his memories after being thrown into the time of BBS where we was Xehanort's apprentice, and most definitely did not regain the memories after he recovered from Vanitas being birthed from him. However it looks like he just started to remember these things after his 10 year sleep and it might have to do with his heart being inside Sora through all the shit he went through in CoM.

Ven's heart was inside Sora during the time when Namine was putting back together Sora's memories and we also know by confirmation from Ienzo that Sora retains the memories of both Ventus and Roxas (dormant and compartmentalized of course), so it might be within reason to assume that in the process of Namine fixing Sora's memories that she also inadvertently fixed Ventus'. So when Ven's heart returned and he woke up in KH3, he began to remember about his past.

Yeah in the previous story update before this recent one, dialogue from Brain connected to something in one of the secret reports for KH3 where Luxu described a virus in the dandelions that wasn't supposed to exist and in KHUX, Brain called himself a virus. He also knows that Daybreak Town is a data simulation and wants to get out of it so his actions are probably going to be what makes the Dandelions get ejected from their fake reality and into the "real" world some time before the start of BBS
