Because it literally isn't Quake in anything except name.

Not good for new players or old players.

I still think arena shooters have the potential to come back from near extinction, but they need to stop catering to the 30 year old boomers who barely play video games anymore. Quake Champions was a step in the right direction at the very least.

Bethesda bought it and outsourced it

please play quake champions

Attached: 1504550909645.jpg (500x498, 130K)

>Step in the right direction
>Actually dies even harder despite mass marketing campaigns

Because it's not 90s anymore. Zoomers don't care about arena shooters when they have fortnite and overwatch.

nobody cares about arena shooters

Why would i play this clunky mess that's too nailed down on it's roots when i can play something like titanfall2 which has much higher skillcap with more action and it's more fun even as a shitter because of the great movement it has.
QC fucked up because it tried to cater to both old grumpy quakefags and the young audience, but ultimately didn't deliver on either end.
Also the netcode is shit (might have been fixed, but i haven't played recently)

It's still the most popular Arena Shooter by sheer numbers. And it's still getting content updates.

It hasn't failed, Yea Forums. Because it doesn't have fortnite numbers, doesn't mean it's failed.

People are sick of Q3 gameplay, they've been rehashing that shit for 20 years.

Q2 on the other hand is the superior game and is in need of an update.

Attached: q2.jpg (600x450, 69K)

quake 4 is better than 3 though

>no custom maps
>no custom gamemodes
>no private/custom servers
>no custom models
>the no-stats gamemode is private-match only
>completely mediocre new maps that fall into the "it's a real place" trap of level design
>better air control, rocket jumping, and strafe jumping was tied to champions you had to buy
It's obvious that they're not really trying to bring back the series in a proper way. Between this absolute abomination and the half-aborted progeny that was Quake Live, the recent history of Quake is entirely made up of half-assed attempts to make a quick buck off the name.

This.

I also think they should have offered texture packs.

As in you could make it look like classic quake, or a high end graphic quake, and to actually sell and have unlockable slut quake. OW sold based on asses, Quake could have too if it was something you could swap on or off.

Fucking this. What the fuck where they thinking releasing an arena shooter with literally 0 community mod support. The fundamental core game is solid.

/arena/ will come back with the March update right?

right?

UT literally had all of this yet nobody played it for jack shit. The real reason is that casuals don't want to learn and streamers will get no money by covering it. every journo andnormalfag said QC was a return to form, played it for a weekend, then went back to whatever mobacancer they played. Arenashooters are not viable in the current gamespace centered around hotkeys, randomized elements, and tacked on progression systems.

fuck off

a horribly long beta that killed off all hype. they announced it too early then kept it locked away in closed beta for way too long.
next once it finally launched it turned out they had been wasting all that time doing a whole lot of nothing. EXTREME lack of maps, game mods and features. time wasted on game modes that were just axed. time wasted on adding more and more heroes when they should have been adding basic things like the maps.
the core game at this point in time is good I think. i've played a couple hundred hours at this point but they were far too slow to add necessary things.

but the hype is the main issue. a shit game can sell if it's launched correctly and quake champions is an amazingly perfect example of how not to launch a game.

>UT literally had all of this yet nobody played it for jack shit
Are you talking about the newest one?
It never got out of pre-alpha before they killed the development.

The pre-alpha label is a poor one, as it's perfectly playable right now. The UI lacks polish and many of the maps are just basic versions, but it's mostly as feature complete it needs to be. You can both play it to your heart's content and make as many mods and maps as you want for it as you would for previous Unreal Tournaments.
If anything, it is a very good example that the mindset just isn't there anymore. Given how little the new movement system added to the game, it's as "pure" as any arena shooter revival needs to be, and it had the content creation capacity that everyone was begging for. Between new kids not wanting to make maps and all the old fans being literally 40+ (if they were 20 at the first UT's release) by now, there's just not that many people that actually care about real arena shooters.

It's playable for sure, but there's a HUGE amount of people that doesn't even know it exists because it never got any kind of release announcements.
The only way i know it exists is because i saw some article about the pre-alpha starting (and played it a while) and the pre-alpha tag is a big turn off for a lot of people.

You can't make games with high skill floors
Give me one successful high skill floor game in the past 5 years

How hard was it to just literally make Quake 3 with better graphics?
That's literally what it had to be to succeed.

Don't forget the god awful performance, and complete inability to play the gamemodes you actually wanted to for ages. I don't know if it's fixed now, but holy fuck, whoever decided to group instagib and DM deserved death for that shit.

I quit before CTF, then considered coming back to see what it was like but I heard they butchered F2P unlocks to try and squeeze a few more bucks out of a dying game so I never bothered.

>hero shooter
>runs like shit
>shit netcode

Siege

I will when they revert Slash's movement from her Overwatch slowdown. I still can't believe they listened to that faggot.

>extremely slow updates
>shitty ass engine
>retarded devs
there you go

>which has much higher skillcap
It doesn't at all. You almost always have to sacrifice the skill ceiling to lower the skill floor and Titanfall is a testament to that.

Quake Champions was a braindead choice in a lot of ways. Introducing champions with different health and armor with abilities ruined one of the most appealing things about the game which was everyone plays on an even field. It was map knowledge and skill that was the core focus rather than drafting as well as those two. By introducing champions as well, they discouraged older players from visiting it as they felt like a cashgrab and ruined what made Quake 3 Arena appealing. Additionally, the few old players that play it are extremely good at it and as a result, makes it unappealing to new players due to the gigantic skill gap between them and those players in matches.

This

it's not on console

they prefer escape mechanics over skill

QADEQADEQADE isn't exactly as high skill as mastering Quake's physics and is being removed soon

I don't know if you noticed but it is no longer the nineties.

lol no

It's Doom 3 single player with Quake 3 multiplayer.

It's the least original Quake game.

stop trying so hard

Hero shooters are not arena shooters.

Yep, it's a dumber and more pussified time
Overwatch trannies asking for easier games
Weebcucks praying for Japanese to rape their sisters and charge them $60 for a costume in the next autoplay JRPG
Kiddies not even playing games and judging games based on streamers' reactions

you're delusional if you think QC wasn't a massive failure

what a terrible opinion

VQ3 > Q3 CPM > QW >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Q2 > Q4 > QC

Hope Diabotical isn't a failure like QC

Players don't want games with nuance and high skill ceilling, this is why so many genres are taking things from mobas and just making everything hotkeys. this is why zoomers praise titanfall's basic as fuck movement despite it lacking any of the nuance that older games have. Yet even that couldn't allowed in a battle royale game. Testing player skill is not the mantra of games anymore, hardcore is now considered 'tryhard' and a joke. Players want easy to digest games without having to learn the mechanics past a day of playing.

One of the biggest problems was the shitty early access F2P model. The initial release was buggy, had poor netcode, only 2 game types and three maps. First impressions are everything, and that just left a horrible taste in most people's mouths.

If you really want an arena FPS to succeed, then you need to put actual weight behind it, and release it as a completely, fully featured game. Make sure the game is good first AND THEN start promoting it through ads and tournaments and sponsorships.
The arena FPS genre isn't necessarily dead or incompatible with modern games. Fighting games have a similarly high-ish barrier to entry and yet are almost more popular now than they ever have been. Somebody just needs to make a damn good arena FPS, but sadly id dropped the ball with Quake Champions.

/arena/ will come back when Diabotical comes out, QC is dead already it definitely won't last with actual competition

fpbp as always

no one actually wants arena shooters anymore, we just pretend to seem cool.

Overwatch

Holy shit, these are some retardedly bad opinions.

Why do you think that?
The biggest difference in titanfall is that you don't have pickups, but map knowledge is still needed because of the fast movement you need to keep up. Advanced movement system IMHO requires a lot more knowledge and mechanical skill than just strafe jumping and knowing where pickups are.

What's sad is that we used to have both. Shitters could play instagib, clanfags could play freezetag, and autists could play duel. This continued for years, there were always fun gamemodes without any real focus on winning, stuff like surf and jump maps, zombie modes, dumb stuff like low grav facing worlds with snipers only.

Now everything is trying to be both. BR games are basically portrayed as "hardcore" experiences, but the mechanics associated with them are even more basic and simplistic than arcade shooters like CoD. I don't even understand the audience this shit appeals to, but maybe it's because I have an IQ over 100 and don't think that placing 50/100 is "average".

this is the only real response that matters in this thread

Call of Duty tier hitscan with projectiles being made for heug titans or not meta, health regen, an ability that speeds up your regen, maps are made to be basic and easily traversable, there are no hard trickjumps, etc.

Any moba

damn good joke

>Call of Duty tier hitscan with projectiles being made for heug titans or not meta
>not meta
It's more of a (you) problem, but i get where you are coming from.
> health regen, an ability that speeds up your regen
That's why there's so low TTK
>maps are made to be basic and easily traversable, there are no hard trickjumps, etc
You can't even hope to do anything like that in quake.

fpbp

I wish this game was good. It's so close but something is off

moba is more braindead than br

I haven't played in a while and you're telling me they nerfed best girl's movement AGAIN? Fuck, crouch sliding is the single most fun movement in the damn game.

Attached: tumblr_mlsbirFS8X1qg0snbo1_raw.jpg (1000x1273, 718K)

This also has to do with why class/hero shooters are on the rise as well. Why have to learn multiple playsets when you can just use one and get carried up to success? The entire fps genre is just a shitshow right now slowly spiraling down into anti-skill.

Low ttk is bad

he's wrong though, it's literally a Quake game and plays like a Quake game, it's just a bad Quake game is all, but it's definitely Quake, same movement, same weapons, same maps, etc

it was stuck behind a broken bethesda launcher for like... months. moved to steam and became playable.

i like it.
its fun.
athenas hook shot is awesome.
i wish there were more intersting maps tho.
all of them are stone temples.

Attached: vivian_james_by_xylerz-d7woxqw.png (700x1000, 813K)

>That's literally what it had to be to succeed.
lmfao

this, cs is literally the only game where the low ttk makes sense, everywhere else it's just to lower the skill gap

You're fucking joking if you honestly think titanfall has anywhere near the skill ceiling of QC. And QC is probably one of the worst quakes of all time.

Again a (you) problem, and it very much varies from game to game.
Then again you are probably an overwatch player if you claim something stupid like that.

fuck off q1cuck.

a 1:1 Quake 3 remake would definitely be a lot more popular than QC is currently, nobody can deny that

QC is garbage compared to QW or Q3 or even Q4 but it's still better than Q2

>athenas hook shot is awesome.
bitch to fight against, though, happy they're adding a refire delay to it iirc
>qc brings back a playermodel from q2 as a cute black girl with strong arms and dreads and she isn't shit to play
>game isn't popular enough for either the 'muh virtue signaling' or 'muh representation' sides to even notice
>tfw game will die before hunter

it depends on the game, tacticool gaems need a low ttk and I can enjoy them both if it fits the design

Attached: buzzsaw.webm (600x336, 2.9M)

>a 1:1 Quake 3 remake would definitely be a lot more popular than QC is currently,
yeah, popular with all the oldfags whose exact response is, "why would we pay for a new game with better graphics that we'll just disable anyway when we can play quake 3 or quake live that costs less, runs on more people's computers, is easier to mod, and already has a playerbase?"
get real

t. didn't actually play TF2

I'd agree on that, QC is flawed and pretty terrible but still better than every modern shooter because its still quake at its core. And that fact is how sad the genre has gotten.

>but still better than every modern shooter
Delusional

He's right, though. QC is absolute garbage and I'll never play it again, but it's still miles better than the current pathetic lineup.

has it been released?

>can't be modded
>no dedicated servers
>sabertech
>no config control
>no center fire
>limited mods
>forced heroquake
>no single player
For the next big Quake release this is blunder of the century tier. Why play this instead of Quake Live or Quake 3? There's literally no reason to. It doesn't even have half what the originals had.

Pinning your hopes on idsoftware ever releasing a good modern Quake or Doom is an exercise in futility. They have designed their games to be able to run on every system they can get it on with no regard for the community that made them be and nothing can ever change that fact.

wrong, not playing was the biggest thing in the 90s

Her Q3 design is so much cooler. She has no gory wetware on any of her QC costumes

UT was always shit, CliffyFaggotassB was always shit, Epic was always shit.

Nothing but Quake and Halo counted in the past.

Quake 2 had by far the best mods and the best version of mods
>Rocket Arena 2 with waiting areas and multi arenas, Action Quake 2 made by the guy who made CS, Weapons Factory basically TF, CTF with grappling hooks, LMCTF, Headhunters, Jailbreak, Powerball
Quake 2 got poopoo'd by the multiplayer Quake players because of the slow rockets, no lightning gun, weak grenade launcher and introduction of railgun. They basically couldn't adapt. Quake 2 introduced 3d support and vwep support before Quake. It was way ahead of it and a vastly superior game.

I know, but it's way too late for them to change that now. At least her QC version is still cute, widow's peak and all.

Nah, they're dead as shit. People swarm BRs and avoid DM games like the fucking plague. It's over.

Old Western games dont age or sustain themselves well.

Some examples of 90s franchises from east and west, and how the 30 y/o boomers and younger generations alike take to them :

Resident Evil = still relevant
Ace Combat = still relevant
Zelda = still relevant
Mario = still relevant
Tekken = still relevant
Devil May Cry = still relevant
Street Fighter = still relevant
Soul Calibur = still relevant
Mega Man = still relevant

Half Life = dead as shit
Theme Park = dead as shit
Dungeon Keeper = dead as shit
Quake = dead as shit
UT = dead as shit
Syndicate = dead as shit
Command & Conquer = dead as shit
Diablo = dead as shit

Its pretty easy to see the wide divide. When western developers only care about making short term money and dont have any real passion for the games themselves to keep them alive, why should the audience that grew up with them care to keep them alive?

>UT was always shit, CliffyFaggotassB was always shit, Epic was always shit.

I hate this 8gagger-SJW revisionist history on everyone they hate now. UT99 and 2k4 were amazing games and only little zoomies and stormcucks who don't play games would disagree.

Why is it so hard to release a barebones FPS where the only advantage players have other each other is their own movement and aim?

reminder that Quake 2 was so big it competed with Counter-Strike for numbers for like one or two years before CS exploded

The new UT is that. Nobody plays it. People claim they want to play that but they don't. They want team shooters with crutches, preferably battle royales where luck can allow the weaker player to win sometimes

>(You)

Tetris
Starcraft
X-com
Mortal Kombat
Killer Instinct
The Elder Scrolls

Come on man why are you cherry picking hard you dumb weebcuck?

Because zoomers don't want to work for anything. They want to be spoon fed quick dopamine hits and see their favorite multicolor haired streamer flossing 360 no scope rocket dabs nitefortwatch.

The engine it was built on.
Anyone who says otherwise never played the game for more than 2 rounds.

It's not Quake in any way

it didnt.
theres just to much of a skill difference between quake oldfags and newfags.
since there is no matchmaking new players will imediatly leave the game after their first matches.
you read about each 5th match that someone is frustrated about the skilldifference

>console kids will keep playing rehashes because of their tiny game library compared to PC
*fixed

because tf2 is and still will be the best team based FPS

>since there is no matchmaking
What? There is matchmaking. There is hidden MMR even for the non-ranked modes

Fucking this. They put in a sub-par amount of effort and killed this shit with its outsourcing and lack of foresight. I can't keep track of how many fucking times they completely retooled the class differences to the point where they may as well not exist anymore, which is probably for the best. Quake would have easily sold itself on name alone with proper marketing and a modicum of common sense.

Attached: E5C97368310F49A985BEA024F16749AA.png (500x380, 126K)

>Quake would have easily sold itself on name alone with proper marketing
I don't think the IP has nearly as much weight as it once did. It's kinda like what happened to Halo, nowadays it's kinda "eh"

Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 were all bleeding edge for their time. These games were built on the latest greatest engine available, available on Linux and Windows, had full control over CVARS, dedicated server support, fully moddable, etc. They basically took advantage of what it means to be able to play games on PC

nuQuake and nuDoom are nothing more than shameless cash grabs on the name with nothing that the originals had. They're designed to work well on console and PC while abandoning everything that made the originals a household name and if you support them you are the cancer killing gayming.

based
FUCK CLASSES

cant believe that. im playing it myself and usually the matches look like
rank 1: 50
rank 2.3.4.5.6: 29-18
rank 7 and 8 sometimes even have - points

there are gamemodes without champion abilitys, and gamemodes like this are still in developement together with the community via discord

If they can make a comeback with Doom, then I think Bethesda of all people could generate enough hype for Quake. I realize the former has WAY more mainstream appeal, but it's still a name I think people recognize, even if it doesn't hold that much weight. It's also not a series I'd say that's really fucked up the integrity of its name either. Like there hasn't been several bad Quake games in a row that have all left a bad taste in people's mouths or anything, so it's not like there's any bad history they're actively fighting against either.

>want a standalone game with Galena
>realize Bethesda/id could never do of because everyone would think it's the same short haired, demonic-power-related lady with the same VA from doom 2016

doesnt look like that to me

Attached: Screenshot (63).png (1920x1080, 1.81M)

If you think Doom was a comeback you're a cocksucker. Doom is garbage and everything wrong with modern FPS

It has Q3-like movement, and requires a lot of the same strategies when it comes to timing armor/health pickups.

>Tetris
>Western game

Attached: Alexander Lukashenko in 40000 AD.jpg (720x540, 222K)

>implying anyone would know what a tetris is if western world didn't pick it up

Quake and Doom were only ever relevant because of mods and the ability to make it whatever you wanted. nuQuake and nuDoom are nothing more than shameless cash grabs on the name and if you support them you are cancer.

>fullbright skins
Modern Quake players are such soft cunts.

Soft cunts that will kick your ass

No instant gratification.

Tetris was semi-obscure until the Game Boy version.

biggest FPS in the 90s
I'd wager that crown belongs to cs even when it was just beta, and even though it literally only existed for months during the 90s. that mod blew up like crazy.

>be a kid in the 90's
>play Quake
>can choose any skin, map, sound, game mode, anything I want
>jump in any server I want immediately
>be a kid now
>play Quake
>play our heroquake or else
>spend forever waiting to play some shitty mode you don't want
gee I wonder

game boy sold more in americas

Too hard for retard and zoomers are all tardos.

And yet has more players than any "actual" quake game out there.

My main issue here, if they mod it to play more like classic then I will play it.

As it stands it has no real gameplay identity.

There really isn't much of a market for them right now. I doubt Diabolical will do any better either. Don't know why people insist on trying to appeal to purists, if anything arena shooters need some new ideas or different takes on it. QC might've done better if it wad developed in house instead of it being outsourced to a Russian developer.

>a recent game has more players than a 20 year old game
wow what a surprise

That doesn't make it Western.

Tetris is a Soviet game owing most of its success to Japanese consoles. It isn't completely unrelated to the US like, say, Soul Calibur, but it doesn't belong on a list of Western franchises either.

Name a shooter with a higher skill ceiling that was released in the past five years.

>Tetris is a Soviet game owing most of its success to Japanese consoles
'no'
Game Boy sold more in US than Japan
Tetris owes it being a household name to the US

That doesn't magically change the development team.
Trigun is an anime but only saw success in the west, that doesn't mean burgers magically made it.

That was their point, not mine and it's wrong for the very reason I gave.

Problem is there isn't enough good marketing for quake to be good

On top of that its a fucking shitty MTX game, which means its designed primarily around matchmaking.

And it launched with a paywall, despite being designed entirely around a f2p model
>no campaign
>buyable classes
>microtransactions (lootboxes)

its in the same catagory of shitty game design as overwatch, minus blizzard's massive advertising and blizzdrone population.

Having to buy characters sucks, but I'll never understand whining about cosmetics.

What could have been fun unlocks become shit

And worse you'll get 20 cosmetic updates before you'll ever see a bugfix patch in these kinds of games.

if you start the game you have a shitton of challenges., also a free seasonpass.
play the game for 1 single day and you can buy about 6 champions, 2 are for free.

>Pre-manconomyTF2
>hats were fun unlocks that showed off how much you dedicated to the game (mostly by idling)

>Post manconomy update
>no one gives a fuck and quits, causing valve to have to go f2p to justify continued development.

Why won't anyone contend with the fact that idsoftware's games became a household name on the back of mods and idtech no longer and will never be able to supports mods thus their games will never compare to the originals. How much do you get paid to support their cancer by defending them?

Attached: 1531390886652.jpg (400x400, 35K)

Guess I just don't care much about cosmetics especially in a first person game. There's like 0 chance the cosmetic team is the balance team.
Hats were shit period.

>Why did it fail? Quake was literally the biggest FPS in the 90s
It's literally the same Quake and I played Q2 and Q3 after the release (Q3 was garbage without OSP).

The thing why it's not popular is that /arena/ genre is dead for zoomers, easy as that. Nobody will play Quake even if it was perfectly polished, nobody wants to learn how to play it, how to cycle items, how to count mega / heavy, how to use multiple weapons, etc.

No one really cares about non-perfect optimization or netcode - both PUBG and Apex have garbage optimization and netcode, low FPS and lots of crashes, still hundreds of thousands of players are playing it.
Because it's BR and BR is a common genre among zoomers, it's way less demanding to your personal skill compared to /arena/ genre.

Retards who say that QC is OW clone or that "classes" ruined "pure Quake" are really, really fucking stupid. So stupid that i's embarrassing honestly. Those people never played Quake or even OW because they fail to realize that QC plays exactly the same as Q3.
There are no "tanks" or "healers" or "supporting classes", every single character was usable both in TDM, SAC or Duels, depending on the current "meta".
Yes, there is characters "meta" - the only thing makes QC different from classic Quake games.

Attached: S.png (723x1023, 1.09M)

>t. shitter
If you even end up in a situation were leanspamming would be helpful that you've already fucked up big time. That's actually a large part of why it's being removed, because it gives noobs like yourself the impression that the best way to win is to get into shootouts and try to use exploits for cheap frags.

>VQ3 > Q3 CPM > QW >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Q2 > Q4 > QC
I hope you, retarded imbecile, realize that QC includes every single movement mechanic from all other Quakes.

>Diablo = dead as shit

not remotely, diablo 3 did numbers going into highest games all time territory

>It's literally the same Quake and I played Q2 and Q3 after the release (Q3 was garbage without OSP).

except it doesn't even remotely resemble quake because of shit like it being locked down and the maps being worse than old fan made maps

as much as i love quake II this just isnt true, when unreal came out it literally made quake seem non-existent
and thats not even counting unreal tournament.

Don't try to argue about things you have no connection whatsoever, underage zoomer. Always laughable when some subhuman Yea Forums clown like you is trying to tell me what is Quake and what is not.

>Stop using my logic

>implying
I'm not trying to put Tetris on the Jap franchise list. I'm just saying it is not a Western franchise in any shape or form, even if it sold a shitload of units in the US (it likely sold even more in the ex-USSR if you count bootlegs, and is a household name there too)

>new doom and quake come out
>one is loved, one is forgotten
>both have dead multiplayer shortly after release
>one is multiplayer only

Lack of single player killed it. Quake 1 had a really fun single player, they should have tried something like that.

>Actice works both as a fun melee approach and as a good tool for escaping from a fight you're outmatched in, whether that be armor, health, or weapons
>double jumping feels good
>great classic doomguy skin

>Why did it fail?
It takes 30 minutes to get into a match.
Never waste people's time.

Players never used to force other players to appear fullbright on their own screen, That shit is cowardly.

No fucken shit m8. Even if I kept up my skills, and I never claimed to, I'd still never sink to their level of cheapness so I'd lose by default. Being able to win doesn't make you not a soft cheating cunt.
