Yeah I've played some emerald and white 2. I've heard REALLY good things about HGSS too. What's wrong with the other games though? They all seem pretty similar. I liked Pokemon Pearl.

I grew up playing morrowind, baldurs gate, etc and although it is babys first rpg there is something satisfying about capturing, training and fighting pokemon. It suffers from what all nintendo games go through which is stagnation, they hardly ever change the formula.

You don't explore enough or talk to the other characters at all. If you did, the cutscenes wouldn't be so overbearing. Further, turning off EXP share (aka, easy mode) makes the game pretty fun. Trainers in SM and USUM have fewer pokemon, which sucks, but their pokemon are all far better trained, have better moves and EVs, and they actually use real strategies. The champion and Hau are downright tough at the end, which is more than any other pokemon game can say about its difficulty.

devs took the challenge up a notch in some areas, and it's free. it's not my dream pokemon game, but it's the closest thing to perfect imo.

honestly, i wish they designed the AI in the base games to be more mentally challenging and competitive with movesets and teams. every time i take a trip to smogon to plan a team, i wonder why they pokemon games never really forced you to focus on strategy, you can almost always win by being a few levels higher. chopping off your ability to grind too hard before a gym would've worked. most of the pokemon are significantly weaker than a select few, a rebalance/retool of many mons to be more dangerous/useful would help, too.

You need to have grown up with it to like it. Thankfully I haven't.

for me it was, from gens 1 to 7:

Dryden was my favorite gym leader because he added actual nuance to pokemon black and white he was alive before the development of pokeballs and was able to understand team Plasma's Reasons for wanting to seperate pokemon from humans
