What even is the gimmick for these? I never felt like I ever solved them, just managed to guess correctly.

When you select an incorrect answer it tells you how many letters in that word were correct. After two to three tries depending on how long the word is you should be able to work the answer out using deduction skills. You can get extra attempts by selecting closed brackets within the code.

Is it sensitive to letter order? Like if it says "CLAWING" is 4/7 correct does that mean it has 4 correct letters in the exact same place or just somewhere in the word?

Just somewhere in the word. OP fucked up a little bit by selecting words with too few variations, A appears in all three and ING on the end. The A is definitely what's throwing me off.

It's growing, both trading and clawing match 4/7 so it's -ing plus one letter from each of the words, only growing has matching letters for both words at same places, them being r and w respectively, whereas driving only matches up with trading.

Try "Looting."

4 letters from Clawing - L, I, N, G
2 letters from Dragon - G, O

It couldn't be, because dragon has three matching letters- G, O, and N.

The order of the letters matters. If you got a 3/X match on an -ing word it's a fairly safe bet to try other choices that end with ing.
