I sort of found her to be less easy to suspect because in DR1 and 2 there was always at least one character who was less interesting than the others in your surviving party. Them actually using that as an actual point with V3 made her reveal a lot better than I was expecting.
In general the shit she does and how well she encapsulates the theme of truth vs lies in the game made her the best villain and actually made the endgame of a DR title feel genuinely despair-inducing.

I was replaying the game and realized that you never use any of her statements in debates to push the trials forward.

Everybody except Shuichi, Kaito and Maki were pretty bland desu.
Everyone actually felt like a group of friends in DR2 unlike DR1 and V3 after the second chapter.

I disagree, I thought the other survivors had equal chances for the reasons I stated before so it was a nice surprise.
There's a lot of subtle stuff in the game that makes the twists pretty damn good on replays

The only bland characters in V3 for me was the maid. Everyone had something memorable to them to some degree, while others were less likeable, some were pretty great like Gonta and Ryoma who I expected to be the joke character of the game at first.

My biggest problem with V3 as a whole was that I didn't like most of the characters and that made the plot really hard to care about.
I pretty much hated Gonta, Tsumugi, Kaito, Maki, and Kirumi.
I disliked Kiibo, Shuichi, Rantaro, and Kaede.
And I was neutral on Tenko, Himiko, and Ryoma.
Which only leaves 4 characters I actually cared about. Miu, Kokichi, Angie, and Korekiyo.
4/16 is not good when compared to DR1 11/16 and DR2 12/16.

Biggest reason I didn't like most of V3's cast from the start was how they hardly even tried to cooperate like 1 & 2's cast did. A lot of them kept to themselves which is fine but most of the rest were just dicks without much good reason.

Hagakure had the whole spirits thing going for him plus he actually meshed well with the cast. Sonia had her interactions with Gundam and Kazuichi, and the whole "princess with weird quirks angle. Tsumugi literally had one notable scene up until the mastermind reveal.

If you go by character interactions, sure, Hagakure was more relevant than Tsumugi. But his background is mostly played for laughs and quirks, while Togami and Kyouko were basically orchestrating the trials, Toko had that whole Genocide Jack going on and Aoi had her big relevant moment and character development with the Sakura murder. Hagakure was mostly just comedic relief. NOT that this is a bad thing, but had he died and be replaced with another survivor, it would not have been that surprising.

Same thing I just said about Hagakure. None of her princess stuff is ever relevant in the trials or the murder.
Hell, if you're so bound on defending Sonia, sure. Akane is actually another example of a mostly background-ish character that gets to survive, and that isn't too different from Tsumugi.

I mean, looking at the grand scheme of things, having Akane die instead of Shionji (that was basically the "Kill 1 get another killed free" murder of DR2) wouldn't have radically changed most of the game, is what I mean. It's been a while, but I don't remember Akane being particulary useful or at risks during the trials, and her being around with the other survivors kinda feels like she's "just" there, because she's too dumb to kill anyone and no one bothered to try and kill her.
Tsumugi gave me that same feeling for the whole of DRV3; at any moment, I wouldn't have been surprised if she had been one of the victim, yet she wasn't, and I knew that you always have a small group of survivors at the end of each DR game, so she felt like adequate padding.

For me, Tsumugi was almost like the next step of that, "so you know that one character that survive at the end but was never really that plot-relevant?" pushed even further by giving her almost nothing. By your line of logic any character who had a connection to a deceased character doesn't matter. Shuichi's connection with Kaede, Maki's with Kaito, Himiko's with Tenko, or any of the others from the first 2 games. Sure the relationships might not have been "essential" to the trials or overall plot but they help to flesh out characters and build the players understanding of them as people with emotions. Tsumugi had literally nothing. Not one single character she interacted with aside from that one time with Shuichi in the bar.

Akane makes bullshit "gut intuition" contributions to Trials but her general contribution is her (shitty and half-baked) relationship with Nekomaru which ties into other characters at other points, from contrasting Fuyuhiko's much shorter yet far more meaningful interaction with Peko to being indirectly responsible for Hiyoko's death even more than Sonia because her being a fucking moron and getting Nekomaru killed breaks Hiyoko's budding trust in the group.
I would have much rather had Hiyoko survive, but having Akane die in her place would still lead to major tonal shifts in the writing of the last half of the game. Nekomaru sacrificing himself for the group would have radically different context if he had already "failed' to save Akane, the character/dialogue dynamics in the Trials and other scenes would be very different without Akane and Kazuichi's shitty manzai routine, and of course Hiyoko surviving to endgame would further change the context of finding a picture of herself as an adult. I think the change could make the game significantly better overall if it was done properly (there's huge potential in Hiyoko and Fuyuhiko properly reconciling, Kazuichi would be even more isolated/face stronger pushback for the shitty way he starts to act and could change for the better if he's called on it), but there's no question it would be a major rewrite.

Akane isn't a "major player" but she's still significant in the story, has significantly more presence than someone like Hagakure, and both of them are a level above someone like Tsumugi who for the large majority of the game could have actually just been killed off without any real difference in how things play out. Not just "they didn't really do anything," for her it's "you wouldn't even notice she was gone."

That's stretching what I said. In my opinion, there are character who you clearly are not surprised to see live till the last trial, or at least long enough (not counting "plot twists" death like Kaede, Fat Byakuya, arguably Sayaka, who all die at Chapter 1). Shuichi is the protagonist, and is almost always accompanied by Kaito and Maki who intervene A LOT during trials and investigations. Same as Kyoko and Byakuya in DR1 or Nanami and Nagito in DR2. Yes, they don't all survive through the end, but long enough, and they have plot relevance.
In my opinion, all other survivors could arguably have died during the game and be replaced with someone else randomly without bringing too much change in how the events would have unfolded. Debatable for a lot of characters, sure (I wouldn't put Toko in that category). That's not criticism or hating on the surviving characters, I actually think that this is part of the charm of the game, to be able to surprise you with this kind of decision (though some characters were really unlikely candidate for death after their character dévelopment arc).
And that's where I think Tsumugi kind of fit, and wasn't necessarily "super obviously the mastermind called it chapter 1" character people here seem to assume.

I called it In the 5th trial because she was the only character left who had: not had any character development at all, and didn't have a strong connection to any character (surviving or deceased). This. In the first game you were really made to feel like a rat in a maze. The windows being plated and the cast being sealed inside entirely was claustrophobic as fuck. I read the Cube movies were a major inspiration for Kodaka and I can feel it.

Following DR2, I wasn't even sure if the mastermind of DRV3 was going to be amongst the players to be honest, so this was another reason having Tsumugi quietly struts towards the end of the game didn't really shock me either.
But I see where you're coming from and that's an opinion I can respect.

Not that guy but DR2 is my favorite game. Akane is the only one I actively dislike, some of the others can be annoying (Kazuichi) but I see the purpose they serve. If I had to rank them it'd be something like

Almost all of them have obvious flaws or weaknesses in either their personality or backstory that someone like Junko, the Ultimate Analyst whose reputation is based entirely around manipulating people for her ends, could have easily exploited in their time together at Hope's Peak, as the story stated. DR2 framed Ultimate Despair as being practically a cult of personality around Junko, who were warped and broken by her charisma to commit atrocities that would spread despair as though they were making offerings to their God.
But executing that in a story would require some effort and decent writing so instead we got BRAINWASHING ANIME

I get where you come from, it was disappointing but they're still villains, nothing changed at all. DR3 doesn't ruin the cast of DR2 just because there was anime brainwashing instead of Junko manipulating them.

I kind of felt they could have handled the brainwashing part better. Like somehow forcing them to play an active part in Nanami's death would have been better, stuff like "everytime you blink, this activate a trap" or similar. Pretty stupid, but still DR-ish.
Hell, just give us something like another moment where Mukuro is fiddling with the sticks in Chisa's head for the cast. That was spooky as fuck, much more than watching some trippy videos.

Despair arc would've been better if it focused only on the DR2 cast instead of those FF faggots and didn't make Chiaki the center of everything.

He failed to kill Junko in DR3.

Akane does suck, but I read an interesting take of how she could have functioned as an additional antagonist to Hajime

>Akane’s poverty upbringing left her with idiosyncratic and insecure ideas about what strength means, so she refuses to back down or think too much before acting, and doesn’t respond well to doubt or criticism. That’s an obvious way to drive the plot forward, and it happens to an extent in the game, but would be mostly irritating if not for her “gut instinct”, which is touched upon but poorly developed. She has an almost supernatural sense of intuition, which she’s learned to trust entirely, but she lacks the smarts and temperament to fully contextualise it. That would have been great to use during the class trials, where e.g. Akane “just knows” that Character X was doing something fishy, and refuses to back down or listen to reason. Of course it would turn out that she was right, and Character X was doing something fishy, but it was nothing to do with the murder and Hajime has to prove that, but exposing X also provides an important clue. The arc where Hajime’s logic and Akane’s instinct clash until they eventually learn to respect each other and work together practically writes itself and could form the dramatic core of the first half of the game.

It doesn't ruin them exactly, but it completely fails to deliver on a situation with enormous potential.
Take Mahiru, who most people see as the most plain/boring character in DR2's cast. She wants to be taken seriously as a photographer like her mother, and feels insecure in the value of her own style which mostly just focuses on her friends and happy people in the moment. She wants to use her Talent for something important, so she gets mixed up in Hope's Peak's secrets — a tip from Junko puts her in the right place to take a picture that blows the lid off the Izuru Kamakura project, the spark among the Reserve Course that ignites the fire of the Tragedy. In the slow apocalypse that follows Mahiru keeps taking pictures; there's no more happy faces, but she can finally follow in her mother's footsteps as a war photographer (in a war she knows she started) and document the Despair that's engulfed the world.

There was room for 13 other stories like that, but instead we got Brainwashing Anime.
