I remember some of my longer-played worlds, the ones I played long enough that I had miles of 2x2 tunnels just below the ground with plenty of torches.
I especially remember one with a lot of FTB mods in, where I tried to play with a thorium reactor, and not long after, my entire "lab" area got blown up into hundreds of blocks that there was no way I could pick up before they de-spawned.

It could have been worse, Notch was considering a "torches burn out" change. How many of you had thousands of torches all over the place? Think about what it would take to keep them all replaced when they burn out.

I literally knew nothing about the game. I started after they added hunger or withers I think. I was in a snow biome so I built a small cabin and started expanding it to accomodate a tiny indoor farm. my first mining experience I found a mineshaft where I fought (and defeated) my first enderman. God damn looking back it was kino. Also found wolves and used skeleton bones collected during mining adventure to tame them. FUCK. Stopped playing that world cus all my friends from school got it and we played together pretty much everyday for like a year onwards. Minecraft makes me miss middle school...

The peak was half a dozen blocks away from the old height limit, I remember being frustrated trying to build a second floor to my house because I couldn't place blocks for some reason.

there was a chunk near my house that was just lifted like 130 blocks in the air like a giant rectangular thing.
Everytime you would mine into it and reload the world the chunk would go back to what it was like when the world was created, meaning that you made no change to it.

It was an amazing 'exploration' game that I spent way too many hours creating huge mines and castles, then quickly dropped it when they added story mode.

Honestly I actually like that pack aside from how solid the tree leaves are. It looks like candy and not in the good way. The other thing is the music does not fit the game at all. I made a few scenes from Dragon Ball but that was the largest I ever got to.

It's necessary of you play with health regen disabled or if you're playing Super Hostile maps. There's dungeons in those completely submerged in lava that your need to chug fire immunity potions to be able to swim through them.
Other than that it's a waste of time for normal Minecraft, though speed potions are handy and dirt cheap to make

The one thing they could do to make it better is to add some more random generated stuff in, it feels weird that a game with a focus on exploration and bulding has only a handful of secrets and suprises. I mean sure desert and jungle temeples are cool but once you find one it kinda sucks the fun out of the next. Not to mention the painstakingly long adventure to them, the maps kinda help but still, it would be nice to see more variety and more random spawns of stuff, kinda like the ocean is now, it feels really weird to walk 5 miles on land and find nothing but the second you reach a body of water you get showered in loot.

Try starting up a realm with friends who also want to play. Seriously. I feel the exact way about singleplayer minecraft nowadays, but recently a friend started up a realm for 1.13. We've been playing for a few months now, slowly building and expanding our own village. Shit's fucking cash.
That being said, if you don't have friends who want to play the game or don't have any friends at all then all I can say is try mods, if not then move on and remember the good times.

I literally knew nothing about the game. I started it up when it was in beta and got landed on a small island with no trees and with no surrounding islands. Got real unlucky. I messed around for a good hour or so and tried to build a house out of gravel, which did not work due to gravity.

I eventually gave the game another go with the wiki open and had a proper start.

I recall playing a modpack back in like 2013 where you had a large forge that you could make pieces of tools that you could then craft into more durable versions. Anyone know what mod that might be?

Its a cultural thing to use IIII instead of IV, some well known watchmaker got killed because of it and after it every other watchmaker started doing it as a sign of protest, it also looks more aestetical than IV, even romans used IIII instead of IV before watches were made, because it was nice.

I think it is the best idea for a game ever made. It's simple enough so even a monkey can program it, its enticing enough to become really popular really fast and it is friendly to all ages, making it possible to become a fever amongst children. Minecraft's only mistake is not having much to market upon, like a series like Pokémon does.

I think that's the best analogy for my sentiment. At first it was full of potential, the game was great, its father was full of promises and put care in it. As it evolved it just became better and better and when just as the game reached its figurative teenage years, daddy stopped caring. He got a new promotion, started caring more about his money than the game and when it had finally reached maturity, it was like a shitty adult with issues. Misguided, wasted potential, No focus, no direction and a big bag of "what ifs", but, ultimately, every interaction would leave you frustrated as you would only dream of the "what ifs" and blame the dad for being such a huge neglectful money hungry piece of shit.

The game was great pre official release. It was full of bugs, but it was legitimately better and more fun to fuck around with. I remember me and about 10 dudes from a forum I used to go to back then had a custom server. We played tons of adventure maps, had a survival map with our forum's thematic and memes. Shit was hilarious. Then the game got officially released and the complete lack of enchantment balance and the hunger mechanic officially made survival absolute ass to play. Now all I care about is creative and since anything you build in creative serves 0 purpose, it becomes boring extremelly quickly so I just have about 20 unfinished projects laying around on my pc. I miss the old days so much.

Agreed. Minecraft was made entirely out of passion; so much so that even as the devs began to churn more soul-less and by-the-numbers updates, the original quirky design still carries the game.
Not only is it a fun enough game on its own, it provided many young people an easy-to-access creative outlet that let them express themselves. Huge vanilla builds, mods, adventure maps, servers and plugins and resource packs; all of these things elevated the game to a whole new level.
Also, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say that many good indie games wouldn't exist if this game didn't. Whether they admit it or not, Minecraft signalled to a lot of potential indie devs that making games for a living was financially safe.

After playing both for a while I have to say Total Miner is better than Minecraft. In Total Miner you can have survival and practically unlimited creative in one mode. It's stripped down visually but it's far more open ended in terms of how the player can shape the world.

First thing I did was spawn into a multiplayer survival factions server.
Some kid named Roundiess showed me the ropes and took me to a giant ice shelf after traveling for ten thousand blocks across an ocean that was near his base.
It was frozen river biome, but the damn thing extended for thousands of blocks in either direction with small patches of tundra land scattered about every now and then.
We built a base together on the ice, made an enderman grinder, and became the top archers on the server.

This was back in 1.2.5.

I think the only thing really holding wurm back was the total lack of development past the core features. It took like 3 years to even get fucking animations for fighting. If there was something else to build aside from bridges/houses then it could have be really cool. I suppose that's more a limitation of the engine though.

So I'm playing "Roguelike Adventures & Dungeons", which is sort of like a 1.12 version of Hexxit, but a little bit better due to less old, ugly mods and more newer stuff. I added Botania for some magic networking flower stuff, Chickens/MoreChickens/Roost for breeding chickens to lay every type of material for you, and Actually Addons for some automated farming. I think that's it.

I want to automate and figure out how to do interesting farm systems without tons of factory/tech/pipes everywhere.
