I will agree that Gen 7's Pokemon were probably the most consistently well-designed we've had since Gen 3, if not ever. My only problem with it was that there was too much space reserved for legendaries. While I like the Ultra Beasts, the combination of them, the Tapus, and the Cosmog line just took up WAY too much real estate.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Pokémon Sun and Moon. The narrative depth is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of storytelling and cinema most of the cutscenes will go over a typical players head. There's also Lusamine's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation- her personal philosophy draws heavily from Andrei Tarkovsky cinematography, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these characters, to realise that they're not just NPCs- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Sun and Moon truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Lillie's existential catchphrase "Get in the bag, Nebby!" which itself is a cryptic reference to the surrealist interpretation of existentialist philosophy in the literary works of André Breton. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Shigeru Ohmori's genius wit unfolds itself on their 3DS screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Lillie tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Game wise? Don't like that the player character is a 3rd wheel to Lillie's story. The only time you matter is at the end when you're pitted against the newly established Elite 4. Everything else is for the sake of her or just background interference.

Everything else? I liked the Pokemon and Trainers introduced, probably my 2nd favorite cast after Gen5.

Sun/Moon are my favorite pokemon games of all time. The heavier story and more character-driven focus did wonders for the game. Lillie was the first time i genuinely cared about a character in the entire series. The pokemons themselves are great, team skull and the aether foundation are great, it has an amazing cast of characters and ultra-beasts are fucking cool, plus Lusamine is a great villain. It's not without flaws, the post-game sucks and it is pretty linear although honestly i don't think its that much of an issue in a pokemon game. Everyone seems to fucking hate it because "cutscenes ruin replayability" or because USUM completely shit the bed but i'll forever treasure Alola as my favorite region. Well, at least until they do better.
