When TV was first shown in 1930's everyone thought it was a dumb meme that was going to go nowhere. When the iPhone came out in 2006 everyone thought it was a stupid meme and having a phone that did other things besides making calls was stupid and unnecessary.
New tech always start out too expensive and pointless in its initial infancy, however by testing it out and making changes overtime they slowly become the norm. You're right about VR being pointless to buy NOW but the point is Valve and Facebook are playing the long game.
