DRM took different forms. Like needing to input passwords that could only be found in the physical manual, or needing to input a unique CD key that would only work once, meaning you could never install the game again afterward. DRM got better as technology got better. It has nothing to do with the rate of piracy. If they could have done it back then, they would have. Nobody was saying "well, we COULD put effective DRM here that connects to an internet server and blocks piracy completely, but piracy just isn't a very big problem yet so let's not."

I don't think entertainment software inherently has any monetary value, thus you don't deserve any money, no matter how much you worked on it. My ISP deserves my money for maintaining the physical cables, MEGA deserves my money for maintaining the physical servers, but you do not inherently deserve any money, as you have not created anything real. Money should only be exchanged for physical goods.
