When you step off the cliff you start to generate potential energy in said, Y direction.
air resistance, is literally irrelevant for a human, you will never move so fast that air resistance would have a drastic enough of an effect.
You can try this, find a cliff and just run, don't react to the slope, you will find that you will start to accelerate.

Greater force is human momentum of sprinting, Lesser force is Gravity, Air Resistance is a negligible force at this speed.

You need something that immediately makes it clear to the player that the gun is damaged but still functional, the dust cover is a rather dramatic change in the look of the gun but with minimal effect to the actual operation. Without the dust cover it's easy to infer the internals would also be taking damage from random debris but also plausible that the internals are relatively untouched.
