The games are seemingly against Lara, like the graphic deaths, but that's just a dressing. She's a human pinball, she walks for ten seconds, floor collapses, high action sequence where gets thrown around for a while, then she ends up right where she needed to be.

Gameplay is a part of video game writing. The devs never commit to anything. The human pinball aspect for example, that's something you often see in movies, a character that's unsure of themselves just gets thrown in to the deep end by some outside force. For me, that always feels cheap because the character didn't actually commit to a decision, just kinda stumbles onto it. But for the actual writing, the devs want Lara to be too many things. Is she a psycho or doing the right thing? Is she a naive kid trying to learn or is she already a merciless killing machine? What really is her motivation in all of this? Old Lara wasn't some Jean Valjean but she had at least a very clear personality.
I liked that in Shadow they're upping her as much more psychotic than before, but they'll still flip flop at a moments notice since they can't ever truly finish her arc until they have a 100% guarantee that there won't be a sequel.
