Most of the people who are balls deep into that stuff aren't watching a lot of other anime. If they were, then they'd start to grow tired of it like you and I both have. I can't even keep a running interest in JoJo at this point and just decided to not bother with anything this season. Anime isn't the medium to do anything seriously or take seriously. Anything that actually directly do philosophical shit is a total snoozer. Its best kept subtle if it's even there at all, and lain is laughable when it tries to do it, like most animes ever. People do take it seriously though, if not consciously then subconsciously. Anime gives people a feedback loop of good feelings and can inform the choices they make in their very lives, which has very real consequences. You may not know it but even the wackiest and silliest over the top anime has some kind of moral grounding in truth. You can't make an anime about nothing at all, nobody would watch it.

Have you seen ABe's other shows? Ghost Hound by Konaka is also supposedly decent, though I haven't seen it myself. If you're into Yea Forums Neuromancer is similar, only with more action.

It's like Lain in that there's not a whole lot of action and it's a real slow burn. Some people get bored of it because of that, but I like it because of how slow it is and how the plot really does progress in an interesting manner showing how fucked up the future of cybernetics can be.

I'm not trying to oversell it. It's pretty depressing

I'll do what I can:
Texhnolyze tells the story of Ichise, a young boxer in the underground mining town of Lux. He gets his arm and leg lopped off by a gang leader after angering a prostitute, and thus begins a cyberpunk tale of transhumanism and despair. Also starring are Ran, a Seer who can supposedly see the future (also best girl), Onishi, the defacto ruler of the city and boss of the Organo crime syndicate, and Yoshii, a mysterious outsider whose motives are unclear.
Unlike ABe's other shows, Tex can be quite violent. Gang warfare is an ever-present reality in this city, and the harsh realities of their existence have turned its' inhabitants into little more than animals devoid of hope. The OST is one of the best I've ever heard, and the show relies mostly on visuals and sound, rather than dialogue. In fact, the first episode features no dialogue at all for the first ten minutes. The style is hard to get into at first, but once it clicks it works really well. Tex also has one of the best ending arcs in anime, but is absolutely not a show that everyone will like. I do though, and worst case you try it out, hate it and move on to something else.
