X2 The Threat you could definitely run but it's a lot older and has a steep learning curve, you could most likely run X3 TC and AP but pirate just to be safe if you plan on buying, there's also a lot of mods that increase performance, avoid X4 for a few years, Egosoft takes a while to iron out their games but once they do they're great

Space is beautiful, but boring. SC has a good idea of hand-crafting a city on a randomly generated planet, but it's truly an enormous project to make that city have content where you willingly get off your ship and genuinely want to explore every last inch of it.
