4 is obviously unfinished but has cavernous depth, just not enough main story to support it (but bloody palace etc)

3 is a half-step between the two where it's obviously not as deep as 4 but also not as tight as 1
Its enemy design sucks, its level design is meh, and its higher difficulties aren't well-conceived

Better mechanics and story than 1 obviously, but 4 unironically obsoleted 3 in a way 3 didn't obsolete 11, 3fags just can't accept it

This is my favourite game in the series. Every time I play it I always complete it in a single sitting.

Nightmare 3 was the only one I thought was shit. While I had little problem with Nightmare 1 and 2, 3 doesn't work well at all with the fixed camera, the fact that you automatically lock onto him when trying to turn on the lights, and the tiny ass room. Griffon and Phantom are serviceable bosses. Nelo Angelo is kino every fight though. I will admit that most of the bosses of 3 are better than the bosses in 1. 4 bosses were fun except the final fight, not as good as 3 bosses.

3 has checkpoints (as long you choose gold when starting a new game) and can be made easier with easy mode, once you get most abilities and weapons it gets more easier as well

And 4 is almost like 3 in that regard, a bit more lenient with checkpoints too

The only problem with the camera is in Nightmare 3.

You can save between every level and savescum to practice it's route if you have to, or just until you don't die. Knowledge from DMC3-on won't help you on 1 because the two have entirely different values of play.

The only bad boss in 1 is Mundus but holy shit what a shitshow that fight is.

I recommend you try out Dragon's Dogma if you haven't then, it doesn't get as crazy as DMC in terms of gameplay, but you can customize TWO characters in that game, plus the director from DMC5 also worked on that game.

Truth be told, the entire DMC series only has a few good bosses. Two which happen to be the same character and have the same trend of being recurring boss fights in their respective games. Nelo Angelo and Nero. Cerberus is the only good "monster" fight, while Credo is once again a bipedla "equal" boss fight.

Played this for the first time a few days ago, took me one evening. I guess it was a bit dissapointing. I'm playin DMC 3 now and I can't believe how much this game is of an improvement in every regard, better humor, story, graphics, more variation in combat and weapons. Not to mention the camera controls. The cinematics are even fun to watch and have some really creative action sequences. Not to mention it's a whole lot longer and the bosses are actually a challenge.

Boss (and enemy) combat design in 1 is unironically the best in the series

Literally the rest of the series was other people chasing these highs and moslty failing miserably.

HALF of the enemies in 3 are variations of Shadow and all of them are of varying annoying instead of brilliance of design that Shadow was. They're ALL doing "can't hit me until X" gimmick while Shadow has way more going for it than that enemies 3 have nothing behind the copied gimmick.

Until in 4 and 5 they finally realized they can't compete with enemy design of 1 and just copy-pasted enemies from 1 straight up. Even there 4 couldn't help itself but make them more annoying than good with Chimaera Assaults.

Bosses -- Nelo Angelo is straight up foundation of ALL 1 on 1 bosses in entire series.

Nightmare is completely unique boss not just in the series but probably across all vidya in how it acknowledges the fact you fight him three times and you have to be very conscious HOW and WHEN you break orbs on each of the encounters.

The design of Nightmare is mindblowing in how it's completely mechanical and you can control the flow of fight entirely -- ALL of his attacks go in patterns and all of them can be parried but you won't understand it at first go.
