Shin Megami Tensei

What am I in for exactly? I've heard a lot of criticism in regards to this game but whatever. Pokemon is disappointing and I need another JRPG to play.

SMT fans are just butthurt over the fact this actually has muh friendship as a theme, it's otherwise a solid game except for the last area.

SMT4A is decent, but play SMT4 first. SMT4 is pretty cheap on the eShop too.

I’m in the same situation, except I’m going for IV first instead of apocalypse. The gameplay vids I’ve seen don’t make it seem that interesting, so I dunno if I should try it

Good game.
Unlike in a lot of other JRPGs, buffs and debuffs are really important in SMT games. Make sure you use some. Abuse weaknesses to smirk, which means having a fairly broad range of magical element spells available across the team. Because even if you dont take advantage of this system, the enemy will damn well still be using it against you.

Finished it last year WITHOUT playing IV.
Amazing gameplay and mechanics which I fell in love with, mediocre-to-bad story, WORST world map I have ever seen in a JRPG.

It's the same exact shit as all the other SMT games.

Apocalypse/Final is good but it has a very different feel from other SMT games because you have a group of fellow kids hanging onto your coattails and being dumb instead of them all staying true to their different factions and you killing the factions you don't like. Other than that I really enjoyed it, and I didn't even hate all the characters who follow you around, though I didn't really like most of them either.

most of the criticism stems from the fact that they went for this stupid light-hearted cast that doesn't take the story's events as serously as they should and most of them suck the protag's dick 24/7, which is a big departure from how other SMT games play out

IV's map is even worse

SMT4A has my personal favorite battle system of any JRPG. It’s so, so good and you’re in for a treat.

It's a fantastic game but the characters and themes don't really fit the tone of SMT. I still like that.

Don't listen to this guy about Soul Hackers, it's fucking garbage outside of the setting and soundtrack. The plot starts off interesting but turns into a rushed mess towards the end, most characters are garbage and too much of the plot is wasted on two of them, the dungeons are very bland and easy except for the postgame one, and the combat is braindead outside of the postgame superboss. The vision quests are rad but there's only 3 of them and they just get progressively worse as the game goes on.

Play SMT4 first. SMT4A has amazing gameplay, but it's a sequel and won't make much sense without playing SMT4.

It was 2018. And it just means that they have finished the brainstorming, so they had gameplay mechanics, character design, demon design, world design, and the plot laid out back then. Now they're fully focused on turning it into an actual game.

Since ATLUS has teased that there'll be a lot of news coming this year, I have no doubts that the game will be coming out in 2020.

It's fun. People shit on the main cast who are pretty cliche but the same people praise games with even more obnoxious casts pretty much all the time so I don't really get it. This game lets you toss said cast aside if you really want to too.

You should play IV first. The combat and fusion mechanics in IV:A are great, but the dungeon design is underwhelming at the best of times and the writing's pretty bad. It's a great game, and a lot better than Pokemon in the ways that it's fair to compare them, but that's not saying much.

My issue with the first one is they tell you to go to a place and sometimes it’s not even on the fucking map. Plus there were a shit ton of “walls” that could only be traversed by a specific thing and you often times have no idea where this thing is or where it leads. This is from the perspective of someone who drops and picks the game up multiple times in one playthrough, apoc really made it easy for me to traverse the world and I appreciate it for that.

My issue with IV is how the best ending is considered "bad" but someone once told me that I'm just a depressed faggot and that's why the ending makes the most sense to me
Strange Journey Redux is a remake/enhanced port of one the best entries in the SMT series and it's also on 3DS.

Apocalypse follows IV's neutral storyline, as in it starts right after Flynn begins his saga of completing side quests to restore hope to the people of Tokyo
Other than that, you're good to just start it, you don't really need to do Neutral. You get some bonuses for carrying over data from the other endings to Apocalypse though

The storyline in IV:A is based on the neutral route so watch the neutral ending on youtube if you care
