Gen 1 designs are the best and most memorable. The newer gens are just overdesigned digimon looking deviantart tier shit. Pikachu, Mewtwo, Charizard, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Mew, Arcanine, Rapidash, Rhyhorn, Scyther, just off the top of my head manage to be iconic even without needing to be overdesigned. All the later pokemon games still try to do the elemental animals thing but the designs just aren't as good.

I still hold the opinion that some/most of the gen 1 designs are so generic that they would have been created at some point regardless of the existence of the pokemon franchise. Rapidash is just a flame horse, Muk/Grimer is a slime, Charizard and Dragonite are just fat dragons. And so on. Look at Horsea, Tauros, Magicarp, Krabby/Kingler, Seel/Dewgong or the insect pokemon. These things are literally just animals.
