man this brings back memories

SO GOOD

Give it to me straight.
Is Andromeda really that bad? I've skipped everything about this game aside from animations and forced openworld.

At least Anthem did SOMETHING right.

If only it could also bring something else back...

The problem with Andromeda is that everything is so convoluted. Like even using inventory is just fucked. Everyone memed about the animations but the game has serious problems beyond that. In my opinion it's basically broken.

Gameplay-wise is actually not bad.
It suffers a bit from modern open world busywork, but if you liked the idea of exploring space from ME1 this can kinda scratch that itch.
The plot is boring and uncreative as fuck though and your decisions have absolutely no impact on anything, there is literally only one ending.
The dialogue system also got fucked over ala Fallout 4, in the sense that instead of Paragon and Renegade, you can just say the same shit with 4 different tones, which are nice guy, nicer guy, kind of a dick and sarcastic.
If you can get it for $10 it might be okay, but it definitely feels soulless, as if there's something missing.

Overall, outside of the missions and such, it has a gameplay loop similar to MGSV, regarding going into the open world, getting resources, and going back to the ship to develop new stuff.

One thing I really did like though was the improvements to armor customization, ended up making an armor that I wish I could replicate in previous ME games.

I'm not going to lie, all I want is big maps with a shitload of things to find and do on them, kind of like Inquisition with a sci-fi skin.

Well it does indeed have big maps, and there is a fair few things to do

Everything about it is godawful.

>Combat
They brought back ME1 cooldowns but kept everything else like it was in 3, so powers are essentially totally useless. You can't really control squadmates, you can tell them to attack enemies but you can't control what power they'll use. In exchange you can swap your talents on the fly from predetermined loadouts. Sounds awesome right? Except doing that gives you a fucking MASSIVE cooldown on all your powers so there's zero point to using it in combat. Also they got rid of classes and class restrictions so instead of working with a balanced set of powers, you just pick the best powers across the board.

>Dialogue
By far the worst part. Every dialogue option Ryder has sounds exactly the same. All the characters sound the same too. They all make these cringe self-aware sarcastic "jokes", and there's no chemistry between anyone. I picked 'professional' dialogue options nearly every time and my Ryder still cracked shitty "jokes" constantly.

>Exploration
Awful. The Nomad is a step down from the Mako in every way. With the Mako you had difficult terrain, but you could still accurately judge which slopes could be climbed. With the Nomad it's a toss-up, and you need to use this annoying boost mechanic with an incredibly short gauge to get anywhere. Not that you want to explore anyways. There are four planets you can drive on: two are deserts, one is a snow desert, and one is a desert with some patches of water and trees.

>Characters
I've never seen a more unlikable cast. There's one guy on your crew that acts like a complete psycho with a hero complex. You can tell they tried so hard to make Peebee likable, but she just comes off as this mash of cliches. She's the genki girl, and she's the nerd girl, and she likes being alone but she's an extrovert and make jokes and is sexually aggressive but also super shy. Drack and Vetra are by far the best, and they're just bland Cool Grampa and Warrior Girl archetypes.

Well, it's kinda that, except the gameplay is actually okay instead of some MMO-tier clunky shit.
There's plenty of stuff to do, specially regarding setting up outposts and helping make the planets habitable.

>so powers are essentially totally useless
Not at all, biotics specially are useful. There's definitely some more useful than others, like the one that basically rushes you towards enemies.
Combining that one with the slamdown can do a lot of damage.

I think I might be able to salvage some enjoyment out of this just with that. I stopped caring about the ME story after the way 3 went.

just spoke to moot
he said no

The story in general is really unrelated from the trilogy.
Aside from your father being an N7 and the girl with the sidecut being implied to be TIM's daughter, there's not much.
Well, there's an alusion to the Reapers in that one of the natives from Andromeda thinks that you didn't come to the galaxy just to explore but rather that you were all escaping from something.

I just assumed that it would eventually be revealed that's why the Andromeda Initiative came to be. The person/people in charge were secretly aware of the Reapers, and decided to flee the galaxy in order to preserve what life that they could. Guess not.

>moot
Who?

Oh no, it's exactly that, and it's implied that the Initiative was mostly funded by Cerberus.

Who keeps posting this in every fucking ME thread.

I'm gonna keep going because fuck you I played this game to completion just for the right to bitch about it.

>Enemies
I am not an expert on this stuff, but the enemies are just really... not fun to fight. In ME3 each enemy had a unique strength or ability, and you could easily negate it by playing smart. Like infrared scopes for Centurions or armor-piercing ammo for Guardians. In Andromeda, you really can't do any of that, you just have to patiently deal with enemies the slow way. The worst are the krogan, because they can stunlock you even through cover and the only way to deal with them is to just tank everything they throw at you and shoot their heads a lot. There's an enemy called an ascendant that's protected with a shield, so you have to shoot this rotating orb to break the shield and stun him for a bit. I discovered that no matter how much damage you inflict while his shield is down, it is impossible to kill him in one go. He always breaks out of it and puts the shield up, so you have to break it again. There's no reward for good play. You can't outsmart enemies, you can't exploit weaknesses, you just keep shooting.

>Plot
The Kett are the worst looking baddies I've seen in a long time. Nothing about them is interesting. They're grey aliens with grumpy faces. The main villain is the Archon and he is completely underwhelming. There's actually a sidequest where you can talk to another high-up Kett and learn that the entire Kett government thinks the Archon is a lunatic. They actually want you to kill him to help them politically. How fucking depressing is that? How the fuck are you supposed to take him seriously as a threat? He's a joke, if you don't kill him then some random Kett assassin will.

Oh and there's an ancient race of not-Geth that look really lame or something who really gives a fuck.

Yeah but you can do more damage by shooting, and you'll stay in cover as well. There's no reason to use powers other than to break the monotony of shooting from cover. And once you use them it's ages before you can use them again. The game is rationing out powers as little rewards, just enough cool shit happening to keep you suffering through the shitty stuff. Contrast to ME3 where you can make a full power build using biotic or tech explosions as your main source of damage.

You can combine them.
Rush, slamdown, shoot them all while they are flying or on the ground.
It's way faster than just waiting behind cover until they shoot.

It was back on /vg/ for a while. What happened?

>Like infrared scopes for Centurions or armor-piercing ammo for Guardians
Or you know, just spam bullets at them.
It's not like the differences were big enough to make it necessary to use different strategies.

I'm seriously surprised that Bioware, supposed masters of storytelling, actually shit the Kett out. Dullest antagonistic race they've ever created, there's absolutely no depth to them. The main antagonist doesn't even have a name, just a title.

And then a new wave appears and all your powers are on cooldown. And that is only effective against generic mooks, anything tougher won't be killed that easily.

Individual cooldowns trade consistent damage for burst damage, and it's not even that much burst damage. They worked in ME1 where a singularity could fuck up an entire room for a good long while, but not in the ME2/ME3 system.

It absolutely makes a difference on Gold/Hardcore and anything beyond. And killing enemies faster is it's own reward. You didn't have to use that stuff (I don't remember ever shooting a Phantom's sword to break it and I don't know anyone who did) but it still added depth to the game and rewarded the player for using strategy.

>And then a new wave appears and all your powers are on cooldown
If I remember correctly, those two specific powers had a 5 or so second cooldown.
Not that I used anything else.

I am surprised that ME3 multiplayer is still somewhat active.

who unironically listens to miracle of sound here

I honestly never used charge/nova, I mainly just stuck with tech/combat powers, which were trash. Tried using a sniper rifle but that felt awful. What I ended up doing was just dumping everything into my turret and drone, activated cloak, and browsed Yea Forums while the game played itself. If you get every gear with construct buffs that comes your way it's incredibly effective.

Probably. I try to like it, but it was terrible. If it wasn't for the ME tittle I'd dropped it immediately. I put too much hope into it
