They are conversation topics. Each girl likes (heart)/dislikes (nothing)/doesn't care about (note) certain topics. Choosing the topics she likes will raise her mood (see the "Hi" word in pink?), and vice versa. You can choose up to 5 topics per conversation. The goal is to keep her mood high until you unlock the event that progresses your relationship.
But notice that the "Attack" option is unavailable. It's because the girl's gauge (top left corner) has only 5 segments; Attack becomes available when you get 10. In order to get more segments, you do the girl's non-conversational events.
