Nintendo's president is mad because most people only subscribe to their online for 1 or 3 months instead of a year. >Like other consoles’ online subscription services, people can either sign up for a full year of Nintendo Switch Online at once or just go month by month, the latter an option which’ll eventually end up costing more. Still, Nintendo’s company president Shuntaro Furukawa said in a Q&A session with investors (via GamesIndustry.biz) that a growing number of people are opting to subscribe for shorter amounts of time as opposed to signing up for a full year. >“We are not disclosing details by each membership plan but among consumers who have purchased memberships, however, a growing percentage is now opting for shorter plans like the one-month membership,” Furukawa said. “This is in contrast to the situation around the end of October of last year, when we reported that over half were opting for a 12-month family or individual membership." >To encourage those subscribers to opt for either the yearlong membership whether that means they do so as an individual or through the family account, Furukawa said its “critical” people continue using the service for long stretched of time and said the company wants to “boost the appeal” of it for yearly subscribers. >"It is critical that these members want to continue using the service for a long time rather than letting it expire, and for that we need to build relationships with consumers and enrich the content" Furukawa said. “With this in mind, we are currently planning ways to boost the appeal of the service on a yearly basis. We will announce more details as soon as we are ready.” comicbook.com/gaming/amp/2019/02/09/nintendo-boost-the-appeal-of-switch-online-subscription/
What are your thoughts? Why do people only buy short-term subscriptions instead of yearly ones?
Nintendo barely has any games worth playing online. 2 years into Switch's life and the only good online multiplayer games are Splatoon 2 and Smash. Not everyone can play those for 6+ months without getting bored. It's way cheaper to just buy a 1 month sub when you buy a new online game, rather than paying for a year and then wasting 70-80% of it. >b-but tetris 99 xDDD lol
Daniel Myers
Because they know they are only going to play smash for a few months and then shelve it.
James Carter
Gee whiz maybe give us something worth getting it for
Imagine paying for second internet just to play some peer-to-peer games
Hudson Torres
Releases 1 good game every year and wonders why nobody wants their paid online
Bentley Sanchez
Isn't it like. 20bux for the whole year.
Ian Barnes
What's your point?
Noah Hall
Yeah, $20 for the year and people STILL won't buy it. It must be pretty fucking bad.
Luis Carter
That's like a month of allowance
Christopher Jenkins
I thought people liked multiplayer Monhun. What happened?
Connor Wright
literally just got a new pokemon game you can only VS/trade on switch online, what more do you want?
William Watson
Smash Bros didn't boost yearly sub numbers, and neither will Pokemon. It will be exactly like Smash- normalfags will buy a short-term sub, the autists will buy a year sub, and the president will bitch that their sub numbers aren't high enough.
Gavin Powell
>can count the games worth playing online on one hand >service is shit >service doesn't offer anything worth paying for >service was free gee whiz big fuckin mystery here lads
Tyler Carter
only like 12 people enjoy classic monhun. and half of them prefer 4U.
James Taylor
Nintendo doesn't have MH World.
Austin Butler
People buy short subs because they're not confident in nintendo's ability to deliver a good online experience they don't resub because their fears are confirmed
Christopher Russell
I already added more people than that from MHGU just playing through the online multiplayer, you tard.
Oliver Garcia
Make a better service.
Christopher Reyes
Pretty much this. And before anyone says it, no, Tetris 99 will not make people want to subscribe longer.
Alexander Morgan
Do what PS4 does. Give out "free" games on a timed monthly basis. Not NES stuff. GC, Wii, Wii U, and even Switch. Lock the games when the subscription ends. Give us discounts in the store.
Jacob Murphy
the sort of people who play it are super autistic robots like who can't into any kind of hyperbole or other linguistic nuance, so no one outside that circlejerk really wants to play with them
Cooper Gomez
This is the mindset of the fanboy. Rather than asking Nintendo to improve the service, they just screech at others that they should already be happy and pay for it. Pathetic
Jonathan Foster
Disgusting
Blake Murphy
Do you get mobile support with that? Or only wifi online? Because if the former that sounds like an okay deal, if the ladder fuck Nintendo the same as Sony and especially microsoft for starting this silly trend in the first place.
Benjamin Morris
Yeah, and it still isn't worth it.
Luke Davis
nintendo is never going to do that they dont even drop the prices on their games they're certainly not going to give you a whole game for a $20 subscription
Dylan Long
Then actually fucking offer something. Instead of offering NES games nobody fucking wants, make the new subscription offer Nintendo games from a wide arrangement of years from NES to Gamecube. Make it like Netflix but with vidya.
I think Xbox has this actually.
William Gutierrez
I have an idea, remove the subscription.
Gabriel Robinson
People buy short-term because they're not sure if they'll be using the service beyond the first few months. You might be into Smash now, but maybe after a few months you'll move onto something else and you'll have paid for time you won't use.
Eli Martin
they can't just admit failure like that user
Jaxon Turner
People signing up and losing track of all these small purchases is how people go poor.
Joseph Jones
>Shit tier netcode that manages to be worse than OG Xbox live and PS2 online >You get a tiny selection of NES games trickle fed to you instead of a Virtual Console like they've done for the past fucking decade >The only relevant game right now for online is Smash, which has an absolute dogshit tier online mode (I'm seriously running into SP flag trolls in fucking Elite Smash) >Having to use a fucking phone app to talk online with friends
What a joke, I'm glad people aren't buying into this shit
Jace Hill
This. Most people don't want to play only Smash for 12 months straight.
Thomas Thomas
>bot used to summarize article >'thoughts?' at the end with no actual conversation Why do people allow blatant advertising like this to be posted?
Thomas Ortiz
>mad Nintendo fanboy
Henry Kelly
>suddenly force paid online scam like the others >do absolutely nothing to make it worth it >their own flagshit games run like shit online >HURRR WHY DONT PEOPLE BUY INTO OUR SCAM Holy fuck get fucked, I really like the Switch but I am extremely against online fees on consoles and Nintendo's """service""" seems to easily be the worst of the 3 Tetris 99 is the only thing worth a damn at this point and even then people will probably just come and go as they please and sub for a month till they get bored I really wish they would take the fees away, they started without them, now it's shit, get fucked Nintendo
Gavin Hernandez
Man, the system started off with free online, but then forced the fees, NO system ever has done that. Even Sony didn't fuck over PS3 owners by making them also need a PS+ sub when PS4 came out and needed it to play online They could back down by making online free but still requiring the sub to play the Virtual Console stuff. It's really the worst service of the 3 though Even PS4/Xbox offer basic communication services without the sub fees, nintendo forces you to use a shit app
Jackson Nelson
People bought short term to test it, being the same kind of P2P that the WiiU had without additional payment (and frankly, is outright shitty) and just getting to "rent" games they probably already bought several times already people probably got understandably turned off.
Kayden Garcia
Well first off, there is no Switch Online support for South East Asia region or India or Africa or even South America.
John Moore
I will never pay for a service to play games online using my own internet. Now, if they want to make a service that offers a lot of other good stuff, then that's another story.
Gavin Powell
>no voice chat without a cell phone (why not just use the cell phone) it shouldn't cost anything because it's terrible, and poorly thought out, but the switch owners will still swallow it.
Brody Ortiz
If they just make the online more stable and give SNES and GBA games it would be worth it. Nobody cares about NES.
Anthony James
>Make a free to play version >Make [Company]+ Sub based model that comes with incentives like Sony's "Free" games or M$'s shit. >Now you dont have to pay twice for internet but can if the service is actually worth having
There you go industry I just solved all your problems
Nintendo said from the start the the system would have paid online, but online would be free until they were ready to release it.
Jacob Clark
They should stop giving their customers a fucking sour deal then. Nintendo relies way too much on the loyal sycophants and bootlickers, and they forget that they have to have the quality to back this shit up. Emulators are a far better option than whatever Nintendo's two game a month kikery is. They're control freaks.
Zachary Cooper
>Only game worth playing online is Monster Hunter >Free if I transfer and play it on the 3DS instead
Yeah, and the quality of service offered should actually price it at $0 for the full year. There's not even Miiverse, a web browser and Netflix. I get more disconnects in Splatoon 2 than 1. Switch online is literally worst than Wii U online in practically every way yet costs 20 more bucks PER YEAR to have.
Tyler Anderson
From minute one they announced it would have a cost, they just let everyone use it for free during an extended trial period because they wanted it to actually be worth using before they charged for it. It still isn't, but it was good intentions.
Andrew Miller
I really miss Miiverse, the in game intergrations were great, i probably would shell out the money for Switch online if it had the Miiverse and had the same degree of integration in games, still worse then the WiiU that did it for free, but it was nice.
The fact Splatoon 2 is connected to Twittyshitty instead was a obvious and noticeable downgrade.
