Open world as in you can discover the world laid out to you freely, but you still have an overall story structure and ways in which you have to progress. For example in order to cross water, you'd need a pokemon which can learn surf which is only possible to get in some areas etc. I was just thinking of pic related when I wrote botw style.

I don't care for Pokemon, but I'll watch because I'm interested to see if they really do make it feel like they're moving the series forwards. I hope they do, because I wouldn't mind being interested in Pokemon again, but I wouldn't count on it.

Not him, but I'd be in favor of a sandbox Pokemon game. The game would start pretty much exactly the same, but you're free to do whatever you want after that. They could even just model different things to do after the trainer archetypes (fisherman, hiker, juggler, breeder, psychic, etc.)

Yeah, imagine pokemon in a BotW open world with a stamina meter, and different attacks taking more stamina which takes time to refill instead of turn based combat. Traversal abilities (surf, fly, etc) become skills certain pokemon can learn instead of attacks and also take stamina (can only fly/surf so far before needing rest). Then imagine EV/IV training where HP is the stamina stat, so you can train a pokemon to have high stamina but lower attack and speed, or vice versa.

I'm happy gyms are back but I hope they keep the little missions from the island challenge in some way. Little puzzles, mini-games, and gameplay segments you need to complete on the way to the next gym, instead of just going from city to city to challenge the gym, with only routes in between, like XY. Made the gyms completely forgettable as well.

However indoors looks literally just like Gen 7 with an upscaled resolution.

Not even that. Xenoblade already has combat mechanics that would work well with Pokemon. Still kind of turn-based, team-based, and with elemental damage. Add in a Pokeball throw mechanic and it's pretty much done. Switch out the overworld monsters with pokemon. It's all already there. All that's left is adding a simple story and interesting locations.

Zelda saw that and took it with BotW, there's no reason GameFreak wouldn't too. Well, there's one reason. This isn't a problem with imagination or new ideas. Pokemon and GameFreak and happy to stick to the easy path since they have the biggest franchise in the world.
