Rather than the decorated commando demonstrating that fact to the galaxy, Ryder could have been the nobody that greatness thrust upon them and has to rise to the challenge. Shepard would have jettisoned Peebee out the airlock for the shit she pulled, for example; even paragon had a very clear limit to the bullshit they put up with, which is what made it a nice change from the usual doormat good/stupid evil dichotomy

The characters alone make it already better than MEA. Seriously, what does MEA even have? I accept Vetra, okay but who else? I didn't finish that game I don't even know the name of the final villain and considering that I never see him getting posted anywhere and him having 0 fans just like most MEA side characters, and unlike most ME side characters, he must as shit as most protags of that game. I don't even say MEA is as bad as anons say, I will finish it sooner or later and kind of enjoyed the start. But better than ME1? Nah.

The characters from ME1 feel more like RPG characters. Some out of luck second rate cop, a racist soldier, a big ass lizard ready to turn on you, a mary stu archeologist, a female xeno that agrees to help if she can get info out of it and Kaidan I guess.

Because a lot of Mass Effect 3 was good and the rest of it was because it was rushed. They clearly did more in 18 months than the 18 months of real-ass development time Andromeda got. While the base game fell off, the Extended Cut brought it up to "okay", and the DLC was pretty good all around, with Citadel having some real heart to it. So it was easy to see it as a misstep.

Andromeda was a bigger misstep, but you could blame it on the rookie team and whatnot.

Anthem is the last nail. It's a looter shooter with boring loot, great shooting, and a story that's geniunely better if you skip all the dialogue. It's exactly backwards from the Bioware I knew and loved.
