In-canon reason is that since the Soldier-class BETA is made from human matter and DNA, it takes an androgynous appearance due to it being made of both male and female organic mulch.
Due to this duality, despite having a male-like physique, they also have redundant female genitalia, leftovers from junk human DNA.

Most of the BETA are made of organic matter from other alien species. The game stipulates that if the BETA can recognize humans as sapient beings, they would stop attacking them.
However, in a spin-off based on the Extra universe, the BETA attack and actually acknowledge humanity's sapience, but this just transforms them into combat forms instead of mining and industrial forms.

Extra is mediocre and tedious, but it's not unbearably bad unless you lack the patience to read dating sims. That's what makes Alternative so good, however.

Alternative fails to actually go anywhere interesting with it's plot despite the massive build-up, and the vast majority of geopolitical stuff is fucking retarded on a base level. It's really not worth sitting through 2 games of schlock to get to.

It uses sci-fi quantum physics to justify the fact different routes exist and don't exist at the same time, and that becomes integral to the plot and the character development of the two main leads by the end.

No problem. It's not for everyone but those that it is for, enjoy almost universally.

Finding out the mystery behind the BETA and solving the multiverse riddle gives the needed emotional catharsis and finality at the end. The pacing might be inconsistent during the last few hours but it did what I needed to do to raise the stakes.

There's a lot to say about the politics too but I'm not going to get into that.

Even as a dating sim type visual novel it's unbearably bad, at least the first time you go through it. I've read other slice-of-life-ish Visual Novels before, so it's not like I have a problem with the genre or the format. It's just genuinely bad.
You're right about it making Alternative great though, it's all worth it in the end. It's just a shame it has so many barriers to entry, even of the few that aren't immediately put off by the name or the genre, I bet many fail to make it through the first game.
Also it improves a lot on subsequent readings. It's significantly less boring when you're able to notice all the foreshadowing and interesting details and shit.

It slowly turns from a homage to rom-com anime of the 90s at the very beginning into an homage to sci-fi mech drama anime of the 90s by the end. For fans of both it's amazing, especially if you weren't aware that it did that before you started.

It's not that long and there's plenty of ridiculous over-the-top scenarios to notice it's not trying to take itself seriously at all, even with the seldom emotional scenes.
It's a stupid, derivative work that sets up Alternative.

The sex scenes really don't add much. Except for the one with S00mika and Takeru, which is super sweet, as it's part of her character development, an issue with cognitive disassociation.

Assuming you have the 18+ patches they're not. However, a song in Extra got cut because it was a rip of of Living La Vida Loca, and about 2 songs got cut from Alternative but they added another new one. There aren't nipple bumps on the pilot suits. They also added in extra CGs to Alternative. The translation was also touched up and reads better than the fan translation. Most importantly it'll work on OSes past Windows 7.

Sure, it doesn't take itself seriously, and it doesn't expect the player to, but it's not actually a parody or anything like that. There's no twist or lampshading (until after you're out of that part).
It's just a bunch of anime tropes played completely straight, generally done in the most boring ways possible.
Something "average" will still have highs and lows throughout, it'll usually be interesting, or dramatic, or funny to varying degrees. It won't be consistently good but it shouldn't be completely dull either.
Muv-Luv, the first part (before you get to the alternate realities and such) is consistently boring as fuck, and it's many hours in length, longer than some full games. Something that is consistently boring isn't average, it's bad.

But the solution to the mystery of the BETA is barely even cathartic. It's quite possibly the least satisfying possible explanation for any of it and it just raises even more questions that it doesn't bother to answer. It's like a sequel hook that doesn't even try to bait a sequel, it's just saying "oh yeah by the way here's some more mysterious shit, bye"

Not really. It's just a dark mecha sci-fi epic spawned from a dating-sim franchise. It's famous because the story itself is top-notch, and is easily the best visual novel ever written. It has a multiple-worlds gimmick but there's no meta-commentary about visual novels there at all.

I think you're missing the point of cosmic horror. There's no finality or reason for the deaths and brutality. All the sacrifices were just so they could live slightly longer, and break the time loop.

It's kinda like how half life 3 was going to end: despite the odds of galactic proportions, the only way humanity can live is by keeping the fight going.

The setting's grim but it doesn't overly wallow in it. There's still funny moments, romance, heroism.
