In September they confirmed that it will come to PS4, Steam and Switch at the same time but that they're early in development. I'd guess it's a year or two away but at least you'll be able to play it on your system of choice.

You've never actually played a Disgaea game have you...

The most basic solution is to stack your characters into a tower. Your most powerful character attacks but the experience from the kill is shared amongst the tower. There are other methods to share experience on top of that but that is the most basic without getting into the nitty gritty. There's a reason reincarnating your best character to level 1 isn't a death sentence.

That's why Disgaea is so great. You can get tons of experience by using things called Statisticians, which multiply the experience you get. Combine with either Tower attacking or Magichange with monster units and you can level many characters at once. Best leveling method takes 9 characters to 9999 in one battle.

Unfortunately they did change tower attacks and team attacks for 5. They no longer give full experience for everyone. I guess they wised up to the DD2 method that allowed you to level an entire squad to 9999 by using a Tower Fall attack and purify. I don't know why they bother nerfing shit though.

I've personally never used tower attacks, just thought it's easier to explain than luck based team attacks or squads. Wouldn't say 5 nerfed things when they gave you a way better option with the Exp squad. Sure you can't use it in the super early game but you spend barely any time there and really shouldn't be thinking about grinding.

Most Disgaea threads discuss the games and characters in my experience, not counting Etna threads. This was kind of lewdbait from the start though.

It's not really a busy time for Disgaea right now anyway though. 1 Complete was such a straight port there isn't much to be said and 5 Complete is great but is a rerelease of a 4 year old game.

I bought that game and forgot about it the next day. Apparantly it is not a bad game though.

My opinion on it is a bit weird.

I loved HK1 despite its flaws. The setting and characters were fantastic, music great etc. Gameplay was somewhat of a slog but I found the bosses and the handcrafted levels to be pretty interesting.

HK2 has new characters which I was willing to let grow on me and I've enjoyed the story thus far, but the gameplay is kind of... It's hard to describe. They made the combat itself faster and gave you more options, which is cool, but the bosses are incredibly anti-fun compared to the first game, almost every boss I've fought so far in 2 just creates a shit ton of minions, which were the least interesting fights in 1 already. But the killer is the world design is like 90% corridors that reuse the same assets on a square grid. It's an absurd step back in world design after the first had some legitimately nice locations that were appealing to explore.

I'm reserving my judgement until I finish it of course, but I'm definitely not a fan of the world design changes. Otherwise I see it living up to the first game pretty well though.

Do I need to play the older Disgaeas before 5? I bought 5 a while ago because it was on sale and looked anime so I thought why not, but it's pretty insane

They are so boring and uninspired, they have almost killed the whole series since it murdered any kind of fandom momentum it still had.

the problem with 5 is that the story is really bad (hero want revenge, defeat boss with power of friendship, take enemies in team because he'd be worse than them if he killed thos genocidal murderers), it lacks that usual "disgaea self awareness twist" and the cast itself is really gimmicky and only seem to focus on each character in their own chapter arc, makig them silent bystanders the rest of the game.
This doesn't help to make it memorable.

I loved the D5 cast. I feel like I've heard people call every Disgaea cast the worst besides the first games so it's hard to take that complaint at face value. The only character I've outright disliked in the entire series is Mao personally.

Do you guys think we're getting Disgaea 6 any time soon, or in this generation of consoles at all? I hope they release it within the Switch's lifespan, replaying D1 and D5 on the Switch in bed was a blast, there's literally nothing comfier than laying all curled up in blankets in the dark on a super rainy, stormy night grinding shit out. What would you anons want in D6? Any locations or characters you'd like to see?

I will say though, thank god D1C finally got patches for bugs that have gone unfixed in the original Disgaea for years now, the healing spells not giving exp to units in particular

Somewhat but not entirely.
It's an SRPG, so you need to have frame of reference like FF Tactics or something.
You start each stage with base you can move from up to 10 characters you have. After that you need to clear all enemies.
That's about it.
No penalties for failing aside of game over and bad endings. saving before stage in a hub area always prevents anything going horribly wrong.
no permadeth either, everything can be healead.
It's more of a game which gives you lots of tools and simple puzzles which you can either bruteforce, or abuse game mechanics and solve them. Or both, usually both.

Haven't played into the breach, as far as xcom sort of but not really.
The closest two games I can think of as far as gameplay feel are Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics. Just watch some gameplay footage and you'll get the gist. It's essentially the battle gameplay of Tactics Ogre / Final Fantasy Tactics with a FUCKTON of postgame content and an encouragement to break the game as much as possible, you end the main stories around level 100-200 but you can get to level 9999 for any unit fairly easily, there's shit like reincarnations and whatnot back to 1 to boost stats, eventually you can get your stats so big that they don't even fit on the screen. It's the kind of game where you go from doing single to double digit damage numbers in the beginning, to thousands of damage at the end of the story, to billions of damage in the postgame. It doesn't take itself seriously at all and pushes you to find gamebreaking strategies and tactics. I'd recommend it if you have hundreds of hours to kill
