Truth be told, EVO and the FGC in general's overall popularity has been taking hits across the board from 2017 onward because SF5 is just plain not enough to carry it. People hate the game and are tired of it/ We're not in a dark age yet, but it's getting kinda dim compared to SF4's run when it felt like the sky was the limit. Smash is a reliable mainstay, but MrWizard wanted a little more room for new games in hopes of another curveball like what BB and DBFZ did for the event. Smash's other majors started pulling entrants away to the degree it could comfortably become one or the other at EVO. If they were both still pulling in 5,000 entrants combined, they both probably would've stayed, but they don't because EVO's de facto status for them was redistributed across the rest of the year. I honestly doubt Ultimate is even gonna beat SSB4's record, that was just such a huge year that apparently had a lot of overlap between new games.

It's a mix of business and Mr. Wiz just not giving a fuck enough, since people seem to have forgotten he never cared for or liked Melee and only allowed it for the money. But now he can get more money from shilling slots for new games and from other fighting games. Fighting games are not an obscure thing or hardcore thing. They are e-sports and easier to pick up now more than ever.

Not to mention the most big-name Melee players are currently transitioning to full-time streamers of even to Smash Ultimate. Ultimate is going to beat Smash 4's record because it is on the Switch instead of the Wii U. I think future game announcements are going to be very important because otherwise is EVO going to take a major hit in 2020. Year 2 of a NRS game, years 3 for Dragonball and BB Tag. I didn't even think that far ahead, 2020 is gonna be a bumpy ride. And honestly, things are only gonna get worse with time working against the community. Kids who were 18 for SF4's first EVO are now pushing 30 and many of them can't do this forever. Speaking from experience, regardless of how much I hate SF5, it's not the days like 2010 where I could wake up at 8:00 AM to watch Saturday pools for a random local (or even watch pools at all, these days) and then stay up until 3:00 AM on Monday for grand finals. I'm not even a tired old man, it's just the motivation slipping away with me doing something else while tournaments run, and it really bums me out that I just don't care as much anymore. I refresh my memory on stuff like Inthul's ECT run and it was so damn long ago, and I was so much more into it.

I don't think there's a higher note you can leave on than still having all the other majors throughout the year, including other FGC majors like CEO which is currently lobbying for Melee entrants on Twitter right now and even retweeting other majors doing the same. Other games have been dropped from EVO and had nothing to fall back on. Melee is only dead if Melee lets itself die.

Nigga, it brought in the second most viewers in EVO last year and all of the Melee majors have been growing in viewership lately. You can keep whining that you don't like the game personally but stop trying to distort reality. Melee has had a surge in casual viewers over the last couple years.

There are some intricacies to the GC controller that can affect things in game. You can carve notches into the stick gate to consistently get certain angles for things like wavedashing, shield dropping, or for moves with tons of possible angle outputs like Fox's up-b. There's also some stuff that affects dashback success rates, although we have a mod that many big tournaments use that make shield dropping and dash backs consistent across almost every controller. These are optional modifications though and I do just fine without them, people care about that too much. Unlike a lot of other games at EVO that use buttons and a stick that can input like the 8 digitial directions, the GC controller is capable of angle inputs if not at 360 degrees, then very close to that, so you can see that there will be some big differences from controller to controller depending on the manufacturing quality and wear.

So far it seems the complaints are that the game isn't as fast and aggressive as it used to be and that the long juggle heavy combos are gone, instead it's taking a more neutral focused approach with smaller combos and damaging whiff punishes, which I personally think can be a good thing for the game, at least some of the footage we've been shown after the reveal makes it look like the game has a lot more going for it instead of every character worth something being a heavy rushdown gorilla with endless pressure and chip damage.
Now if only they got rid of Sonya and all the 50/50s...

The mods are all very minor, and the game was fine for a decade without them, so we could always go back no problem if people cared enough. At a tournament with UCF (the mod) all competitors are still equal. The controller mods are controversial but there's not much you can do to regulate them. If you really care that much then I'd suggest asking around to see just how big of a difference they make, and if you still feel the need to bitch then direct your concerns to Tournament Organizers and not anons like me.

They're not defective controllers you stupid fuck. Nintendo is just shit at quality control, so hitting back on the sticks of some controllers makes the character dash back slower than it should, while others don't have this problem. The mod just fixes the inconsistency of the analog sticks, although there's also a physical adapter that some tournaments just use instead that also fix the controller inconsistencies.

Honestly worst smelling people I've experienced at a tournament were anime players. Even then I feel most of the smell meme is some American shit as from what I've seen about a lot of events there they need to specify hygiene.

Sailor Moon. Gameplay has some novelty to it, but the commentators were pure trash.

I'm a Melee player who can't really do much of anything in the traditional fighters since I never grew up with them, and I've only had good experiences with FGC members, the real ones. I think the internet outrage hasn't been representative of how cool people that play these games can be.
