I don't think Initial D needs an open world. The Arcade Stage format matches the manga really well. I wouldn't mind a new story, maybe a fan fiction interquel for Initial D/MF Ghost, but Arcade Stage already does the racing quite well.

i've thrown this idea around a bunch of times, but i want to make a multi-timeline racing game with a strong occult story.

It starts in the 80's, gains a wangan stage in the 90's, then it concludes in the early 10's. You start out normal enough, doing delivery missions to buy a Nissan Gazelle(AE8sux will be rival car only) As you progress, the next era has racers you met in the 80's die and come back as ghosts and vengeful spirits. One stage is a forest fire vs someone who died in a fire, another is against the yuki onna in a snow storm.

You can discover hidden merchants, both human and youkai. Theres a rouge government AI that tunes your ECU, a cursed smith who machines an engine block for you, a wind spirit that blesses a turbo you bring to him, and other stuff like that. You can exercise the angry spirits of long dead racers to find their wrecks, and restore them into period correct vintage streetracing cars. This will be the only way to get a 2000GT and a hakosuka skyline.

I've always wanted to make a racing game where it's half RPG half Card Battle, but I can't seem to think of a way to do the battle system.

The story was going to be kino as it takes place you coming back from a racing academy abroad and finding out your brother the king of all racing died during a race with Mysterious Racer X. Now you must go with your incompetent childhood friend to defeat the 5 Kings (1 per in game week, each with their own story arcs) to get a ticket to face mysterious Racer X to avenge your brother.

The last race ends up being you against mysterious X who reveals to be your childhood friend who helped you raise your ranks to help you avenge your brother and to come up with a worthy rival.

The RPG components would be daily actions during the week either learning new techniques (cards), upgrading and customizing your car (aesthetics and also boosting your cards) and social events (doing enough of them will lead you to gain special cards you can use one per battle.)

How does it sound so far?

One thing i'd hide early in the game is a transformation device left in the back of the lamest car in the game, a suzuki carry truck. If you do a stage 2 weight reduction, you get a prompt that you have found a strange pendant. You can either sell it for a high price, or equip it.

Equipping the strange pendant completely hijacks the entire game, and makes all rivals into showa era Kamen Rider monsters, albiet with a vastly shorter storyline that ends in the 90's.

The newest gen dropped the V6 for a turbo i4 at the top trim, but yeah, the V6 Accords of the previous gen were sleepers that a lot of people skipped out on and IIRC even had a 6-speed stick option in most markets.

I was thinking in my head it would be different as in X literally never shows up until the end.

sleeper as a concept is a fallacy. You're building a skyscraper on sand. That "600hp EG hatch" will be walked by your average 370Z base model simply due to usable power, suspension geometry, drivability and other factors that make this while interesting an undrivable mess.

This is also relevant to why there has never been a good volvo or sport-wagon as they are only fast in a relative sense, not a true sense. Speed is not relative, it's objective. if your miata is fast for G-spec, but not for B-spec, it's not a fast car. Only cars that are fast even after all rules and regulations are truly fast.

if you have a long enough winstreak, an oni from the mountain comes down and threatens to take your car if you can't beat him. If you beat him, you get an aura of intimidation that drains spirit gauges for highway battles.
I'd like the driving model similar to WMMT5, so people like can still have a great time, but diehard racing fans aren't bored to treats.

So similar to yakuza, you're able to buy items, maybe as an asspull and put magical drive-thru convenience stores in japan because that totally exists, and you can buy certain oddball items. So let's say, there was a driver with a skyline GT-R 2000 who died in 1983 on Mt Haruna. His favorite coffee was Boss coffee. You can buy a can of boss coffee at the top of the mountain at a vending machine, then leave it as an offering. The next night, the ghostly visage of the dead racer will appear with a spirit version of his GT-R. If you can beat his ghost to the site of his crash, a cutscene/story slide(if VN format) plays and shows a path to a wrecked skyline in the woods with a skeleton behind the wheel.

You now have to pay a preist to sanctify the wreck before you can move it, otherwise his spirit will return as an onryo, or a vengeful spirit similar to sadako or kayako from the grudge. This can range from a mysterious car using a ramming script to ruin your race, your battery dying and your alternator belt snapping at the same time, or even your car catching on fire and the cost to repair it being more than the preist. You will get an easily missed warning similar to Pic related, or that one video of the british gentlemen near the buring wreckage in the forest.

After restoring his car, you now have to match or beat his time trial record down the given mountain, then his spirit can pass and the car is yours.

Certain cars will retain spirits, and one will even act as a spooky co-driver, helping you with pacenotes on her home course.

Since we are talking about racing games ideas, i have one that i been making up in my mind for a time, it's like crazy taxi but it's set on the future with a cyberpunk atmosphere, like the first blade runner movie, mostly night/midnight driving with the ride mechanic based on Uber/indrive were you survive day by day doing rides, maybe with a story mode thats is subtle between the rides you do.

haha, well for the MC i did'nt though something deep for a backstory, he is just an average joe or a vessel for the player.
For the "story mode" i thought some rides are sidequests full with cutscenes and all, about mini-stories that happen in the city that you heard from your passenger.

Make the soundtrack just a folder on the user's computer, and make next/prevoius song mappable to joystick buttons.

So say I enjoy eurobeat, but the next user hates it, I can fill my soundtrack folder with eurobeat, and they can fill it with psytrance.

Also, if i can map the keyboard buttons, it'lll be just like my real world car. The up and down on the D-pad will be just like the flip switch on my 370Z.

You should've seen the deal I got. Lots of cosmetic damage, but paper records of all the maintenance and mechanical work from the previous owners and just shy of a 160k for $1200.
Runs like a champ and everything works from what I can tell (although I'll need to better my car knowledge before claiming that with confidence), and there's even a mountain highway between my town and the closest city that I can drive on regularly. My dad got me a bunch of nice tool sets this last Christmas so I can start learning to do my own maintenance and it feels stupid how excited I am for that.
