LGPE basically killed any hype I have for it. I have mild discomfort and trepidation towards the direct. I actually really liked USUM, but the past several games in general have shown a stark change in design philosophy that we enjoyed from 3rd gen-5th gen. Even 6th gen, as bland as it was, managed to move forward in some ways like the PSS and the jump to 3D. But it feels like Pokemon is treading waters in many ways, and actually regressing in others. Did you know that there are no battle facilities in LGPE? The first game in the series with paid online? No facilities whatsoever, the first games in the series since fucking Gold and Silver to do such a thing.

I might care if the next Pokemon is a full blown BOTW style third person RPG, but thats not happening. That would require some actual effort from Game Freak.

They have their golden goose. No point in trying something new when they know the same old slop will still print money.

Fan since the start that likes Gen 5, Gen 5 had a fuckload of SOUL, I unironically think BW are better than BW2 because they tried to mix up the formula slightly, but BW2 have a better postgame so the gen basicallly can only be fully enjoyed as a full package. The issues with it are that the region is complete ass (which set the stage for even worse regions in the future games) and while the focus on narrative worked in BW where the story actually had some cool ideas, this caused them to go full retard with the next games with crazy anime stories with instead of the story being based around pokemon, its based around ancient superweapons and interdimensional aliens.
Fucking ORAS thought it would be a good idea to introduce fucking multiverse shit into the pokemon universe, multiverse is the ONLY thing in the entire existance of storytelling and lore WORSE than time travel, I feel like the series needs a fucking soft reboot again or something just to decanonize all that multiverse cancer.
BW also had some of the worst pokemon designs in the series, but also some of the best, the most hit or miss gen design wise of them all, which is likely due in part to it also being the biggest gen.

I always love to watch other people ideas on how to fix pokemon.
For me pokemon would be much better if you could not see stats/IV/EV and had to rely on actually knowing your pokemon, same for the oponent where you wouldn't see their HP points.
Additionally less pokeballs so whatever pokemon you choose to spend them on, you actually bond with them versus lets go approach where you just end with a truck load of pokemons, at that point you really cannot connect to any of them cause they are very replaceable and the easy exp.share really doesn't help that you don't even need to use 5 of them.

How hard would it be for Gamefreak to add a hard mode for veterans and a normal/easy mode for everyone else? Just switch up the teams/Pokemon and add more/less trainers.

I want a comfy open world Pokemon Safari full of different habitats pokemon roam and act natural in, where I can take the photos to be scored by Oak and lob apples and pester balls at them to freak them out a bit.

I grew up playing Red and I must say Pokemon peaked with Gen 5. Gens 6 and 7 have been nothing but hand holding and gen 1 pandering. I have all but given up on Gamefreak at this point.

I mainly just want them to trim down the linear anime story/handholding (especially at the beginning) and have a better region map. The island thing was kind of shit in the end, it didn't feel like there was a lot of room for exploration and since there's all separate there's not much room for that element of passing by something that you can't access right now and then getting to visit it later. I would also like them to subvert some elements that have been on the rise again post B/W, the last thing I want is another starting area with the same starting mons as gen 1 but with one gen 8 mon per archetype. It would be cool if you started in an urban area with electric/steel/poison types and that would also allow them to actually have a cool late game area with normal/bug/flying types.

Really good postgame and the region opens up in a really lovely way as you get further in. HMs are a hassle but there's a lot of good shit to find in Sinnoh.

I guess that's just because you played it first, but all the bosses were rebalanced for the better, they had higher levels and changed movesets if they remained the same species, Ultra Necrozma replaced the absolutely pathetic, intentionally sabotaged Lusalego fight (her AI was set to the lowest level according to the datamine), and trainers had higher levels. This is just the battles part.
It's genuinely an objectively better game, and I almost never say that in any sense because it's usually shitposting, but by every conceivable measure except the already cheesy story, it is superior. I won't deny that it's probably going to leave a sour taste if you played SM first already, because it's too similar and is the first "third" since BW2, which was an actual sequel, so this is a letdown in that regard. Gen 7 doesn't exactly lend itself to replayability.

I think the idea that a 7 minute direct is inherently short is wrong. In any given direct they don't usually spend that long on a single game. The problem is that they will absolutely pad it out with filler garbage and spend twelve seconds showing us the logos and starters for the new generation.

Trailers in general are only a couple of minutes long and often contain tonnes of information. They could spend five minutes talking about Detective Pikachu and then drop a two minute trailer that is filled with new information.

I actually enjoy BW more than BW2 though, but BW2 is still very good. Again, it's because I enjoyed the main game more. Pokestar Studios was a very interesting concept but I eventually got bored of it. One thing that BW2 did have though which I can't understand why they won't have return was the PWT, being able to rebattle every gym leader and champion was nice. Emerald and Platinum is something I would say are objectively better because you pretty much have the same stuff in the main game along with additions to it that are genuinely interesting instead of changes just for the sake of changes that USUM seemed to have.

It's different for BW and BW2 though. BW and BW2 are far different games than SM and USUM are. BW's draw for the people who enjoyed it comes from the exclusively new species available in the main campaign. USUM's changes are mostly put into the story, rather than the postgame, and it recycles a lot of the boring stuff from SM. Still, it's definitively better because of those changes. I'm not saying it's worth buying if you already have SM, and it's probably not worth playing if you already played and didn't love SM, but it is better as a game. It's also the only game in the series to give a stab at making a Legendary boss fight. Uncatchable, higher leveled, buffed up in all stats and with a damage-oriented AI instead of random wild Pokemon AI like normal legendaries. It's not perfect, but it shows more promise than the very disappointing ones in SM despite it introducing the concept.
Really though, SM and USUM should have just been one game.

Gen 5 has the tendency to either be very ugly or very visually appealing. I notice that they look very good when you're on routes they look beautiful, but if you're in towns they can be very ugly, especially when the game starts zooming out from your character. The game could've looked so much better with different spritework in different areas.

I think the Pokemon series itself really hit it's peak during the DS generation. The best main series and side Pokemon games came out on the DS. After Pokemon moved to 3D it has never been the same.

Even the mystery dungeon games didn't handle the move from sprites to 3D well.

I guess I can see that then. I gave a little thought about you saying I don't like USUM because I played SM and I think that's a bit true. USUM still had hints of Lusamine becoming insane from the original script, like her still having her Pokemon frozen in ice, but USUM kinda brushes that off to the side and acts like that never happened. I think people playing USUM first would be blind to the other hints in the dialogue, but I imagine seeing her freeze her Pokemon like that would feel out of place even for someone experiencing Alola for the first time through USUM.

USUM doesn't brush it off like it never happened, she just doesn't need to go to the effort of going mad trying to get Mohn back from his research notes. The URS basically gave her a backdoor out of the conflict that made her nuts in the first place, because they had domesticated their own Lunalas and Solgaleos for dimensional travel. She puts aside looking for her husband because she's presented with a bigger threat. I do agree it's less compelling though.
Ironically enough, despite having less of a focus on Mohn, USUM actually gives closure to her character arc in that regard. There's a secret scene only available at least one month after beating the game where he visits Aether Paradise as a tourist.

No, they fucking didn't. The programming for pokemon was so bad that they had to release the same game again to fix their shit and it was still busted, some moves didn't work and other jank. Gold and Silver was soo poorly optimized that Iwata had to drop everything to help them out and shrank the game so much that he was able to put in Kanto. Gamefreak has always been incompetent and leaning on Nintendo to fix their shit. If they didn't have the marketing power of Nintendo, then Pokemon would have been forgotten in the sea of other monster training games because it offered nothing new or exciting. The fact that it is still around to this day is nothing short of a miracle.

Rotomdex wasn't even a replacement for dexnav, that goofy ass Island Scan was the replacement for dexnav.
Rotomdex was the replacement for the news app and the map, as well as O-Powers (random but with less cooldown if he's maxed friendship). Still not great.

XY had a low effort post-game that was built on gimmick ideas but it was still enjoyable and it helped that it had the best online we'll probably ever get thanks to PSS. You even could customize yourself to be set apart from others. SM had fucking nothing. You finish the game and there's literally nothing to do except another shitty battle facility.

There's also exploration. XY had somewhat memorable areas but SM's locales were boring, uninteresting, and unmemorable. SM's only strengths were the fact that they tried to make a decent story (but failed as usual). No big explorable city which was a huge disappointment too.

Though unlike XY, SM had a great finale, probably the 2nd best behind BW. XY shit the bed extremely hard with its finale, being the worst out of all gens. It also had the worst and most unmemorable characters in the series too.

It just occurred to me how many of the ones I like are Gen 5. I think it gets too much flak for

Gen 5 tends to get more dislike than others design wise due to "many of the Pokemon being Gen 1 expies" even though we've had Gen 1 expies since Gen 2, and receive them every generation. and the reason why that is because Gen 5's dex was originally seperated from everyone else. If the Unova Dex had a few Gen 1-4 Pokemon in it, people wouldn't be nearly as hostile towards them.

What'd he do recently to be likeable? Other characters reacting to him is amusing but I dropped the manga months ago just after the Endeavor battle with that talking Noumu thing.
