if you get too far from your battle line you get personal penalties in the form of suppression and respawn time debuffs, and your team loses tickets faster when you die out of line. So yes you basically have to fight in the battle line, but people don't do it for RP reasons but because you win if you actually fight a proper line battle. It's a realistic shooter so you have to use realistic tactics to win, there were no rambos in the civil war

a tip for getting really good compositions and likewise good screenshots that stand out in a crowd is to use the rule of thirds. this screenshot is a really good example of how to make a good picture look bad though poor composition.

They act more as scouts than bullet sponges, they'll mostly spot enemies for you. Quiet can help you by killing some of the enemies if you get spotted, killing specific targets on your command, etc. As for the story side, although she may seem like just "insert sexy female character" at first, in my opinion she becomes one of the most likeable characters by the end of the game.

D-Dog is far and away the best buddy because he automatically spots enemies, mines, placed weapons, and vehicles without any kind of prompt and marks them on your map. He can distract enemies, wound them, kill them, knock them out, or fulton extract them depending on the gear equipped. I'm also pretty sure enemies don't naturally target him so it's very hard for him to get hurt and pretty much impossible for him to die.
the horse is good for moving around the map fast, Quiet is pretty good for supporting you when you get spotted, and the walker is kind of fun to fuck around with but isn't really very good at any single thing. Use the dog.
