this one is a bit disengenuous and actually cheating; the purple/orange are anti-aliased so there is a glow of different colors where the purple/orange meet the green color. ie, there is a blueish border between the colors on the blue strip, and a greenish border on the green strip.

if this was a crispy aliased png the "mindfuck" would be a cleaner, less disputable effect.

It's caused because the center of your eye's field of vision is a blind spot, due to there being no cones or rods on that part of the eye (since that's where the optic nerve connects to the eyeball). With both eyes open there's no blindspot since the eyes cover each other, but when one eye is closed, your brain just fills in the blank visual information based on what's around it, so your cursor becomes invisible when it moves through that section.
