Yesterday we had a pretty good shmup thread. What are you guys playing? I'm switching between Giga Wing and Raystorm, both of which are at an arcade a few hours away

Was really into Ikaruga for a bit but I find I like Danmaku 3 more because of the color choices. Bullets popping so much more is so much better for keeping track.
I was playing some of Game Tengoku and Psyvariar today on Steam. Excellent, excellent ports that are well worth the money, especially with all the extra stuff they put in these games. It's a lot of fun playing through Game Tengoku as Homura Banto just baseball batting everything to death.
>Psyvariar
How do I into this series? Which ones are worth playing?
Also really dig Shikondo but mostly for the art. Its a budget ass ga.e and you can feel it.
The one that's worth playing is Delta. It has Psyvariar MU and Psyvariar Revision. Plus a new arrange Delta. Those are all the most worthwhile Psyvariars, with Revision being the most worthy and Delta in close second.
Psy 2 is ok, but you can tell they cut corners in the level design (so short). It's still good but you need to import to play the PS2 version so you can roll without killing the skin on your thumb.

I started replaying Darius: Chronicle Saviours again. Forgot how much I enjoyed it. Does anyone know if the Darius collection for Switch is coming Stateside?
Pretty sure the switch is region free
Don't you die on me thread
We could derail it with 2hu, that way at least it wont die
Is there any rule that governs why certain enemies bullets disappear after being defeating in DDP?
I bought this for like 3-4 bucks on the eshop because the art looked cool. Too bad the game itself feels like absolute shit to play. Sound effects are horrendous, the bullets are a complete mess both visually and in terms of patterns, and the enemy/background designs are Touhou tier. The bosses are kinda fun but I don’t like how they’re literally longer than the rest of the stage. It totally feels low budget. There are so many better shmups out there that I couldn’t bother playing Shikhondo for more than a single day.
I've recently been trying to play tuhu again. Been thinking of beating all games with all shotypes to see if I can stop getting reamed by hard
Also still need to do the extras
Undertale.
I started to play mushihimesama, but I think I'm too much of a brainlet for shmups. I lose my first life on stage 3 and stop playing everytime.
It is, but you wouldn’t want to support the hyper jew mode Taito went with Darius anyway. $50 for the anemic basic bundle of 4 games (1,2, and Gaiden) and $150+ for the special edition with 9 games and no G Darius for some godforsaken reason. Oh, and it sold out already. I’m glad idiots support this shit.
I think big enemies cancel bullets, all bullets. It's a trait carried over to DOJ and DFK, the sequels.
to what degree does 2hu skill translate to regular shmups?
I can reliably clear most games on Hard but arcade classics like guwange or donpachi still destroy my anus
>I lose my first life on stage 3 and stop playing everytime.
I haven't played that game, but if it has a practice mode, go into practice mode, play stage 3, and just practice it until you can go through it without losing lives. The beauty of a lot of more recent shmups is that they are very accessible in this regard.
They're all shmups so it'll transfer a bit, but each shmup has a unique gimmick or several except Raiden that means you have to relearn them, but basic dodging abilities never go away
Bullet cancelling enemies are usually added to places where you are intended to kill them in time to avoid being overwhelmed or to increase scoring.
The bigger difference is between old games with fast bullets you need to memorize, and newer games with denser patterns. All the later Cave games are closer to 2hu than to Dangun.
Thinking of emulating PS1 shmup classics like R-Type Delta and Raycrisis.
Which emulator is best for the job and what kind of settings should I be using to get the best picture quality? Can anyone share some good presets?
Rayforce and Storm work fine on MAME, just need to up your volume a bit. Not sure about Crisis, although I hear PS1 for all of them are fine.
R-Type Delta is a PS1 exclusive isn't it?
Yes, it's a PS1 exclusive. Which is why I want to use a PS1 emulator to emulate it. I've never emulated any PS1 games before though, so I don't know which program to use and what kind of tweaks I have to make to optimize performance and visuals.
ePSXe does the job well, but mednafern is much more accurate. If you just want to play, download epsxe
How is the shmup community? My entire experience is /shmupg/ and whatever shmup threads are on Yea Forums
ded
Well first of all avoid /shmupg/. They don't actually talk about shmups so much as they measure epeens and whack each other senseless with them. Second of all, the system11 boards are still alive somehow, so the genre isn't completely dead.
Why is Raiden so well received?
It was the Halo of the early 90s.
Does it matter RSG isn't in English?
Play Hellsinker
play zeroranger
Play Cho Ren Sha 68k
All I know is that kids who hated me became my friends after playing the first one with one at a pizza arcade, and then 6 years later, Raiden X (flash game, basically Raiden II) during anatomy class at the vo-tech program
>he hasn't achieved enlightenment
This, Hellsinker is fucking cool
>getting past stage 1 in pic related
lol
Hellsinker fightan game wen

Anything S.S.H. touches turns into metal
And I love it
Gradius Gaiden is legit the best entry in the franchise besides Gradius V. Literally everything about it feels great.
youtube.com
That's good to hear, I'm going to an arcade soon and kind of worried I'll get shit talked because I can't past stage 2 in Raystorm
Raiden was in pretty much every arcade, specially Raiden II.
what arcade that still have shmups?
Fucking hell Konami don't deserve the IPs they have
There's one near me that is dedicated to retro games, including a few shmups.
What games does it have?
Shmupwise it has In The Hunt, Tatsujin, Giga Wing and Raystorm. Here's the full list

Is Danmaku 3 good for someone who's only shmup experience is really Ikaruga (I've played a lot of them but only Ikaruga really got me hooked to practice)
this guy fucking gets it
It's really good
beginner friendly too
I'm most fond of the organic level's music

Batsugun is a really good beginner game, stage 4 is a bit of an ass kicker but that's it
Explosions I guess. Besides that, sniper tanks.
new game wen
>tfw Cube Rush
Jesus Christ, what are they're thinking doing a luck based segment on a shmup? Then the boss is no joke either.
I always run out of credits at this stage when I was 10.
Ain't the cube rush from Gradius III? There's a crystal level in Gaiden but it's nowhere near as annoying to deal with.
Yeah, I just remembered the nightmare due to mentioning Gradius.
youtube.com
youtube.com
Just why did they make a segment like this?
Why is a lot of the arcade version of Gradius III the way it is? There wasn't a single staff member on the dev team that could actually get to the end and they barely tested it. Which is why the SNES version of Gradius III is considered the definitive version that's not complete aids to play.
stop posting this cancelled game
Has Haccan done art for any other shmups? I loved his work on Mushihimesama Futari.
I don't like playing shmups where I control anime characters. I prefer shmups with cool spacecraft.
it was finished like 15 years ago
This looks like shit.
What are the best shmups on switch
Good art preferred
Googling him he seems to have done the art for FE Heroes
Ikaruga
Dariusburst
Danmaku Unlimited is meant to be good
Never played shmups before but I'm enjoying Devil Engine
why is early toaplan so good, flying shark is the best

Is Wings of Vi considered a SHmup game?
no
No, it's a platformer
looks like aero blasters
Friends, recommend me some SHMUPs to add to my collection.
Ray games, Mushi, Dangun Feveron, RSG
Underrated.
what's the one in the middle? i've been looking for it for ages but I couldn't remember the name, i know that boss is queen something but fuck i can't remember
Mushihimesama is the game, that's the true last boss. I forgot her name
Einhander
Queen Larasa, the final boss to the sequel Mushihimesama Futari
Twin Eagle Revenge Joes Brother
Thunder Dragon II
Air Gallet
>the one in the middle
wew big brain aneurysm, thanks anons
baaaaased shill
I've started to get a real appreciation for Toaplan shooters. They're a little simple, but really fun.
Suguri&Sora
eXceed 2nd
Hitogata Happa
FM Synth is legit the best chip music style. It might be difficult to get their heads around by some people, but after you learn it's ins and outs you can make masterpieces.
did any of you take a chance on RXN Raijn on the switch? Was it worth it? At least they’ve dropped the price to $10.
Been stuck on stage 5 for months. I feel like I should be able to do it if I use my bombs right, but I always get too confident in stage 4-5 and lose a bunch of lives before the descent.
Once I get the 1cc, I’m going to try IKD2007, because I can see myself having the patience for practicing 2-loop runs.
What's IKD2007?
Where's Kamui?
Haven't played it but I heard the enemies are massive bullet sponges even the popcorn enemies
it's right there dude.
Bottom of the pic
What's the best way to play stuff like DoDonPachi games (other than Resurrection) on PC? Do people generally emulate them?
CaveUI or Shmupmame for cave memes specifically, but otherwise people use MAME. I'm not sure if PC ports are considered better than the arcade like with Mushi, but if in doubt use arcade
oh yeah didnt see it through the moons
I try to get everything in original Japanese.
The port of Daifukkatsu on Steam is the definitive way to play it.
babel sword
FBalpha
MAME sucks ass, it has horrible sound and slowdown is totally inaccurate.
Informationpill me on how to use FBAlpha
I use RA, only thing I adjusted was controls, screen rotation and filters. No idea how the stand alone version works.
Devil Engine.
It's a cool hommage to Thunder Force, the intro is dope, challenge mode is almost better than main game, I don't usually say this about shmups, but the difficulty might be a bit exxagerated in a few places, but not overall. The guy who chose the aesthetics is probably an alternate me because he knows my taste perfectly, but the generic indie pixelart look gets bland after a while. The soundtrack is ok, but I expected more. Still a few really good music tracks.
Overall I don't regret spending the money cause I play everyday, but prepare to see those first few stages again and again and again. Progress is really slow and the game quite unforgiving. Play well or go home is probably the maker's motto.
Go away.
fag
I've been trying to beat RefRain Prism Memories lately. The gun walls in stage 3 keep fucking me up.
Your favorite shmup sucks.
No, it's a kusoge.
Do you get a mid game upgrade?
Wait, what the fuck? I had it on my wishlist and Steam never told me it was out.
k, it's pretty fun though
thank you, my search is over
question, is there a score penalty for using burst??
I never get any points for burst at the result screen.
What's wrong with it?
>intentional slowdown
What a fucking retarded idea. Why not just design the game so it gets harder naturally without having to slow down?
>Implying cave can into programming
The scoring system is stupid and stage 3 is a drag.
>The scoring system is stupid
Anyone here ever played Kokuga on the 3DS?
It's a twin-stick shooter made by the same guy who designed Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga.
Is Kokuga any good?
I think the intention shmup devs have when they are mixing screen covering bullet patterns with intentional slowdown is to create epic and tense moments like in anime or movies.
>Twin-stick shooter
>3DS
what's neat is that CAVE and M2 did a tribute to it recently. in the newest port of dangun feveron, you can choose FM arrangements which sound exactly like early toaplan stuff:
youtu.be
What a piece of eurojank shit this game is. The cover makes it look cooler then it actually is.
>liked the aesthetic, gameplay, and music but shit at hori
wat do?
Got any good examples? Because that Flying Shark song is ass. I only know the EO games, which aren't shmups.
youtube.com
Anything by Yosuke Yasui really.
>Mushihimesama Futar
PC release fuckingggg WHEN
The other Degica published Cave games sold pretty bad, so they most likely aren't gonna bother. Shame really, Futari is so much better then the first Mushi.
Luckily at least one arcade where I live has it.
>tfw I just got a Maniac 1cc in Mushihimesama
>tfw it was on novice
fuck it, it still counts
Good start, now do it on Maniac.
i wish we knew more about the sale of shmups on PC
japanese companies tend to go out of their way to shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to that
they sold 20k-40k copies. It's not that bad for a niche genre
Interesting. I just played this game for the first time yesterday.
>When the true final boss theme is slow and serene instead of balls to the wall crazy
Love when this happens
They might have sold better if they weren't fucking horrendous ports that also attempted to use Steam Cloud as DRM.
Did the 360 ports run better?
>Novice is so easy you can do it on your first try blind
>Arcade is absolutely brutal and you're lucky if you can get to stage 3 reliably even with practice. Forget about a 1cc.
GODDAMN SHMUPDEVS! Crimzon Clover is probably the worst offender.
this
Crimzon clover doujin ver have the best balance
My favorite shmup is Thunder Force 4 and it doesn't suck.
What's wrong? Babby want attention? Babby is grumpy because nobody thinks his opinion matter? Babby needs to shitpost in good threads? Go back to /vg/ with your faglike autistic elitism you fucking manchild. Shmup threads are actually good when stupid bitches like you never show up.
I spent $80 on Dodonpachi SDOJ and barely fucking played it. Guess I should try to sell it before the PC version emerges.
fucking based
Jesus stage 4 of Raystorm is kicking my ass
So far I can't get past mid level 3, so I cannot say, but I doubt it. My biggest complaint would be that this game tries to be Thunder Force in many regards, but comes short in a few departments. You have 3 types of weapons, but the only way to switch between them is by grabbing upgrades so say you use spreadshot and want homing, you need to wait until you kill a dude that drops the upgrade and you grab it. It's far better yo be able to switch with a button. So few shmups have a multi weapon switching mechanic and it's hands down my favorite aspect of a shmup because it allows creativity and covering several angles. I have an easier time with bullet hell type shmups because it's easier to focus on bullet patterns and evading.
This game fucks with you in the sense that there are several parts where you are required to focus on several patterns at once and some projectiles canmot be bursted. Especially in level 3. There's a snake in the background that constantly shoots a laser that bursts in a flower pattern and it always aim for you, but since it comes from afar, the game allows you to anticipate it before it reaches you, but you have to focus on enemies in front of you that throws projectiles in a fan pattern and a straight pattern so you have to look in the background to anticipate the laser that cannot be bursted at point blank while simultaneously dodging and bursting the bullets in front while buest have a cooldown. Multitasking is required.
You can burst weapon pickups to change them, which helps a bit
Got sucked into the hype and picked it up. I'm getting pretty deep into the "real part" of the game now, but I feel pretty ambivalent.
I think Zero Ranger's greatest quality is its style, which is on another level. The game constantly keeps escalating and throwing new, impressive sights and sounds at the player every couple of seconds. It's hugely entertaining on that level.
But I don't think it's a very good shmup. There isn't much to the mechanics or scoring, and I think once the visual impact wears off, you're not left with a terribly deep STG. It feels more like a movie of a shmup.
Do I just hate the popular thing, or does anyone else hold the same feelings about Zero Ranger?
It's alright. It's a pretty simple shmup that gets meta after enough loops. I do like it's older style doujin looks and sounds.
I had a blast with it. Really wish scoring wasn't chain-based but it's excellent otherwise.
God I wish treasure still made games.
I can't wait until I become a self sufficient NEET (probably retirement) when I can autistically grind out 1CCs without the guilt.
Speaking of Treasure, ZeroRanger is very Treasure-esque isn't it. Mainly in it's story.
play as kagura
I tried playing this recently but the audio is way off for the stage 4 boss now.
ZeroRanger is to STGs what Gurren Lagann is to Mecha.
It's an elaborate love letter to all things STG, and is hitting you with references from the word Go. The intro is Dimahoo, the story is indeed, Treasure-like leaning more to Radiant Silvergun, and even minor visual flares turn out to be references, like the bomb blasts in stage 2 being from Truxton.
It was the Dragon Quest of Shmups.
A simple and straightforward series with mindless fun and no weird mechanics or scoring systems, and it was everywhere.
I personally don't like the games so much, they feel pretty slow, the ships are deliberately sluggish and the gameplay isn't anything special but I really like some of the music.
youtube.com
I agree with how slow Raiden feels. Can't stand it.
I knew from the start it's not going to be a deep game so I'm kinda fine with it
What's wrong with your audio?
The BGM loops improperly. IIRC it's synched to the boss fight a la Ikaruga
how the hell did that happen? the improper loops
IIRC the devs said that they wanted to do a shmup that was fun to play without scoring and they def pulled that off, it's just a really fun ride through the whole game. There's a ton of details and moments that just make you smile and feel awesome and it's easily entertaining enough to make you play an 1cc even after knowing all the twists and turns. But the scoring isn't really that inspiring, time will tell how much lasting impact the game will have. After getting the 1cc I haven't touched the game much. When they release the planned hard and easy modes I will gladly play those though.
So far I think that it's a really fun playthrough for veterans and a great entry level game for newcomers because the game is fun and exciting even when credit feeding.
Would a bullet hell based on dodge instead of pixel perfect positioning would be interesting?
Does the ability to make some move that give you temporary invulnerability and that can be stacked in different combo to release special attack sounds good?
Any game that already do that?
Giga Wing is a very rudimentary version
You can even find a Treasure logo in the game
If you are interested, you could try using this, it can help you motivate yourself.
it’s worth getting mednafen if you see wanting to plah more shmups as mednafen can also emulate Saturn (among other consoles) which arguably has the greatest shmup library of any console. Plus, the Saturn has superior arcade ports than PS1
Anyone still using ePSXe in this day and age are like the people that don't stop using ZSNES because it's just what they know. Plus with Mednafen if you're scared off because it's a command line program just use a frontend like Mednaffe.
No wonder even Dunkey liked it. Plus I guess namedropping one shmup game in his top 10 list adds to his hardcore indie cred.
>called Layer Section in Japan
>called RayForce in the west
I will never understand these localization choices.
RayForce is specifically the western arcade name. Galactic Attack is the western Saturn release. Gunlock is the Japanese arcade version. And Layer Section is the Japanese home console release. shit’s fucked up bro
>sent an insultingly lowball offer for a mint condition copy of Radiant Silvergun
>the absolute madman accepts
>get a copy of RS that looks fucking new for $100
All these M2 remakes that i keep hearing about, where can i actually get my hands on them?
Are they all japanese releases only? Why arent they on the PSN store? Dont they want my fucking money? I just want to buy and play these fucking games is that too much to ask?
Japanese PSN or your favorite import store, yeah.
Thanks buddy. This is ass though. You are the deliverer of the ass that i asked for. I asked for a load of shit, i guess you gave it to me though. Wew.
Im not mad though.
