In the first NiGHTS you started as the kid and could explore at your own pace then become NiGHTS and fly around the courses. What would've been small sections for each course like the sled part in the snow level or that canon bit in the museum were now turned into fully fledged levels that weren't all that fun.

Purists will say something dumb like the original controller has better movement, but as a guy who has played both i couldn't tell the difference.
The pc port has a ton of extra things, like christmas NiGHTS (without the sonic stuff), a little halloween and summer thing, and the ability to play the game with the original graphics
Its also got online leaderboards if you're into that. It's a score based game so it works pretty well with it.
So in my opinion yes the pc port is worth it

Probably not. I don't see Nights working as a series these days. Best comparison I can make is to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, even by 2004 it was turning into an open world adventure game instead of the score attack arcadey series it started as. JoD was already bloated with filler just to pad the game's hours into double digits. With the amount of effort it'd take to make even just six or seven more satisfying, replayable stages it wouldn't be financially viable because they'd sell it for $40 or $50 and everyone would throw a shitfit about how it's overpriced and refuse to buy it. NiD might be my favorite game of all time but I'm not delusional enough to think a big company like Sega would try to go the indie route for marketing it either. The only reason Sonic Mania was a budget release was because they were able to get fans to do all the lifting for them and because it was basically an add-on companion piece for their "real" game (that nobody liked by comparison, funny how that works.)

That said I'm a turboautist that keeps a saturn plugged in at all times just in case I get that Nights itch, so I've played it enough I'd notice that kinda shit.It's not such a huge issue that it makes the port unplayable or something. If you can't get saturn emulation working properly (last I checked that shit was a nightmare anyway) or you can't be fucked doing that/hooking up an actual saturn there's no reason not to play the PC port.

Maybe I'm just bitter because I just played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and Tony Hawk's Underground back to back and while I don't like THPS2 as much as 3 (one of my other all-time favorites) I still had a great time. I honestly didn't enjoy THUG much at all. The entire time I just wanted to grind out some 100k combos, not pick up chicks in a lawnmower or something.

nah, saturn emulation isn't really collection-friendly. Which is a shame since I'd cut off my left nut for an affordable way to play Burning Rangers again or the Panzer Dragoon games for the first time. Maybe the PS2/HD port will join the Sega AGES collection one day if they ever stop just doing genesis games.
If you have a non-toaster PC you can just get the HD port from 2012. Also on PS360 if that's more your style.

Japan only, don't really know how bypassing region lock works on PS2 since I never bothered with that kinda stuff but I'm sure it's doable to some degree. Be forewarned that the PS2 version (from what I hear) has the worst controls (it's what the HD port was based on but that version was patched at some point to fix them.) Not sure what it's actually like but still.

If you do, make sure to get an action replay to get past region lock. Unless you wanna go all-in with a modchip for burnt discs too I guess. That $30 for an AR is gonna save you like a billion dollars in the long run, buying US saturn games is a fool's errand. Just for reference I know NiGHTS will run you around $30 and Christmas NiGHTS maybe $35-40 but if you get japanese copies it shouldn't break $20 combined on a bad day.
