Finished Earthbound and Mother 3 recently. So I'm wondering, am I supposed to interpret the story as if it were just a child's game? With only some events having actually happened like the death of the mother dying and the protag's son going full edge because of it?

Well, no, there's no more reason to say that than to interpret it literally, but it's really ultimately up to you how you wanted to interpret it after the end, if you want the world to be remade it was, if you wanted it to be destroyed it was. The ending of Mother 3 is the execution of YOUR will as the player.

Well, maybe stating it that way was wrong on my part. What I'm asking I guess is whether people think the creators made the game intentionally for it to be possible to interpret it that way. I mean the way your mother in Earthbound treats your adventure makes it seem like it's not actually for real. After all who would even let their kid on this kind of journey if they know they were actually fighting some time-traveling alien. The way she treats it makes it just seem like a mother listening to the made up adventures of her child and smiling in agreement despite not really knowing what they're talking about, just accepting their imagination at face value, because them having fun is all that matters to them.
