The thing about the TLOU DLC is that it isn't technically gay at that age/in that nonexistent culture, because there's no sexually driven motive behind it. It's more like two kids born in a shitty world who don't know what the fuck is going on but, are close friends with abandonment issues that somehow transitioned to a spur of the moment kiss, due to lack of ability to express feelings otherwise.
Bill being gay has a different tone because he was alive/born during the actual real world culture pre-outbreak, understands the implications, and is an adult.
So when people look at the Ellie + Ridley kissing, and then react through the lens of their real world experience, they're doing it wrong. It's supposed to be viewed within the context of the fabricated world in-game. They were both born after the outbreak, basically raised in a shelter, with no understanding of the outside world. This is what gave Ellie's reactions to the outside world more of an impact throughout the game. She was innocent in that regard.
Now the TLOU2 trailer is gay, because there's sexual intent behind it., and explicitly stated as such. It's also at a party, and while we don't know much about how parties work within the TLOU2 environment, it can be assumed to be a rare occasion, and one where people have a good time and want to hook up, since that's what it's like most of the time. If you don't mention it, people freak out. If you do, people freak out. It's generally more ok for a guy to be gay in vidya because most gamers are male and are attracted to females. But when a female is gay, their fantasies are thwarted canonically and it causes rage.
The right way to do it is to make it seem natural. But that takes on different definitions around the globe, so basically, there's no way to do it without triggering someone.
If you don't want it to be forced, don't force it. Simple as that.

Gayness literally isn't Ellie's defining trait. Not even in the DLC, which probably less than 10% of TLOU players actually played. People made it the defining trait because they put emphasis on their triggered state.
The makeout session from the TLOU2 trailer puts her sexuality at the forefront of that trailer. Just like how the first trailer put her vow of vengeance at the forefront. That, along with her playing the guitar, which was a callback to TLOU1 and how Joel said he'd play it for her one day and maybe teach her (if I'm remembering right).
So if you look at the trailers you see a pattern of growth for Ellie. These are just aspects of who she is. There's even a trailer with her mom. Clearly these are all being shown for a reason. And that reason isn't some "SJW agenda with gay jews and hamfisted logic meant to appeal to tumblertards."

I think Mortal Kombat X did it best. It's interegated into the characters backstory pretty well, and it's not in your face nor does it grind the story to a halt. There's enough hints there for most players to notice.

The Last of Us did it fine. Bill and Elly being gay for example was handled just fine. The way to make it work is to not make them being gay be their whole character trait or important to game as a whole. Neither of these characters are defined by being gay and its not important to whole game as a whole either so it just comes off to most players the same as finding out a character is straight.

She was always gay, regardless of the situation. You don't change who you love. Once again though, her being gay is not treated as some big deal that every character talks about or is super important/defining to her character. Its just a normal part of her life.
