You have no idea what you're talking about. One, fights against other humans are often traumatic because we instinctively avoid killing each other. The limitation is removed if you consider your opponent inhuhman, something these creatures obviously are, and each person fears different things and reacts differently. Two, getting from learning how to fight > learning how to kill > learning how to destroy monsters seems like a legitimate progression. In fact, you could probably skip step two.

Swords often were family heirlooms, they weren't common because of the large family sizes causing the inheritance to split so much, but anyone working as a sellsword or similar position usually had one. It's not like it was completely impossible for the village blacksmith to stop hammering plowshares and make a sword here or there if someone wanted one or was on good terms with him.

sorry, I don't mean to be a condescending ass, and in all seriousness: darkest dungeon's admittedly a fantasy series, so reality kind of checks out in a lot of ways.

Though for actual reference: swords were NOT just something a toolsmith started doing. Making a decent sword that doesn't break or snap off in a person you guy or against the first hard surface it accidentally hits is a very very complicated technique.

Swordsmithing required a lot of training and specialization versus about any other weapon.

It's just another reason why, historically, a sword was not a common weapon to own. making it needed special training, using it needed special training, and owning it needed money.

The time and effort required for all of these you could just have normal blacksmiths make knives, put them on sticks and teach at least five peasants how to poke things with said knife-sticks.
