I really liked the mod, but some of the changes they started making in retail were a little bit offputting

I know they eventually fixed this stuff iirc but the part of development where they didn't let you shoot and sprint at the same time because they didn't want players zooming past their levels they made and removed omni-directional sprint because one giga-brain developer thought it was unrealistic and stupid really left a sour taste

developers like that that hold """realism""" on such a pedestal when they're making a game about one scientist destroying the military and an extradimensional alien invasion really put me off

I'd say it's no longer better then, but it looks like they did what they said they were going to and changed the level layouts so maybe it won't be as dull and shitty as it was in the original.

FireRed and LeafGreen are objectively better than Red and Blue. The only thing Red and Blue are better at is giving you an authentic late-90s Gameboy experience. Outside of that, gen 1 is completely broken mechanically and loaded with shit design that is all fixed in the remakes. On top of that adding loads of post game content.

I think the atmosphere on the gb games is superior. the sound of the music + the level design, it makes a very cold game overall but yet in a kind of happy setting. it's a weird game. reminds me a bit of earthbound, but different obviously.

the remake is TOTALLY not like this. remake is not bad. maybe superior gameplay wise, but overall I think the pleasure is > on game boy. and pkmn silver/gold is a step further from what I've explained. then the franchise changed to a more heart lighted style.
