I don't mind it at all unless it's forced like in your image.

hes big gay daddy

This, don’t really care but if you make him gay for representation etc. then its actually gay

I don't care, just don't make any moves on me.

What are your thoughts on actually making video game threads on a video game board?

nobody cares except social media dwelling idiots who don't even play the game and it will remain this way until you force lifestyle choices directly into gameplay (e.x. PRESS Q TO BE GAY)

How is this thread not video game related.

Attached: Nope.gif (281x295, 2.97M)

He still is user. I still see plenty of art of him fucking Hana. Blizz just made him gay because they know the game has been on the decline for a while now and needed some good boy points to keep people's attention.

I unironically liked soldier's handling. they waited til he had an established character so people dont immediatley go "its the gay character." Also glad cuz mccree would just make the gay cowboy trope and lucio would just be a twink.

I also think him and reyes are gonna be made into an enemy couple. could say its pure fujo talk but reyes had a photo of him in his room. also ana is described as friend to both reyes and soldier but never once is reyes described to soldier as friend in any medium. give me my gay dads please

if you wanna see a real shitshow, make mercy trans. this kills the waifu fags.

76 isn't gay, his character was not designed around it in the slightest bit, it's literally just a line added to his backstory 2 years after he was finalized. It's like JK Rowling adding dumb details to her story on Twitter, it has zero bearing on anything.

S76 isn’t gay
It’s not gay to be in a relationship with a man, plus his lore is ambiguous as fuck
Even calling him bi is a stretch

Hell, I'll even be content with sudden forced gays, as long as it's not tonally deaf. The whole 76 debacle feels like a bad fanfic.

Attached: 16543f2978e44f51bf6d6bed46402891.jpg (1000x1000, 150K)

It's kind of a complex situation.

We all talk about how we don't mind gay characters if they are well written, but it just feels oddly forced and/or agenda-pushing when you take a decently well-written, non-gay signalling character like 76 and just slap the "GAY" label on him.
At the same time, when you have an obviously gay character, that can come off as just as forced if there isn't an explicitly good reason for it considering that being gay is in fact still relatively rare. It's understandable to be quizzical about that as well.

So what we've got here is a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation when it comes to homosexual characters, and by extension all "minority" characters (relative to cultures in which the games are made/released). I'm not gay or a minority in my country but I can't begrudge people who are from appreciating representation of their more rare characteristics, but nor can I say I'm surprised when people feel like there is artificial insertion of minority traits that add nothing meaningful to the game just so the developers can virtue signal to the progressive masses.

There's no simple solution here, I think it's just a matter of different people accepting that other people can get something out of a piece of media that they themselves don't care for or doesn't appeal to them. It's not wrong to have tons of minority characters if a dev wants to insert them, nor is it wrong for someone to roll their eyes at "diversity hire" characters in games.

One thing that we can agree on about homosexuality, however, is that OP is in fact a faggot.

>Also glad cuz mccree would just make the gay cowboy trope and lucio would just be a twink.
there's going to be more gays

its not gay if his girlfriend (Ana) says "no homo" for him while he's sucking his bro's dick, and soldier 69 is super careful about these things

mccree being bi would work. hes a flirt. he didnt have a relationship with ashe, but his voiceline says he rejected her because she was too rich. so hes probably not against dating women. hanzo is the one i think is the gay. a self hating gay, kek. genji is straight as fuck which would make mercy trans drama even more hilarious. i mainly want everyone to be mad. waifufags, girl healsluts, shippers, etc.

Don't care as long as being gay isn't their sole character trait.

>Don't care as long as being gay isn't their sole character trait.
give me a good gay western character in the past 3 years. The only one Yea Forums ever shills is arcade ganon.

>The whole 76 debacle feels like a bad fanfic.
That's because it is. Them being mysterious and going "Oh boy, we've got a gay character to reveal to you guys! Just you wait teehee." was a joke. This entire thing was just to draw attention to the game again.

Attached: 1543443886008.png (248x330, 132K)

I don't fucking care if a character is gay, I do care if the devs go on Twitter and go on about how awesome they are for including this NORMAL behavior to a NORMAL person and this is all VERY NORMAL AND WONDERFUL. I always bash people who suck Arcade Ganon's dick, but at least Arcade was a character that I firmly believe was written as gay just because the devs wanted a gay person and their storyline to be present and not because they wanted to make an actual point about how much the devs love gay people.

I'm not going to be a gay character

>i mainly want everyone to be mad.
Except yourself of course right?

I don't play many western games, so you'll have to ask someone else.

hanzo is too autistic to have any sexual preference
genji is straight as fuck but has no dick anymore so it doesn't matter

I don't make myself upset at other people's lives. That goes double for 1's and 0's. Anyone who says otherwise is a militant teenager convincing themselves to be upset.

You don't design a fucking character around a sexuality

I mean, they pulled the same stuff off with Tracer before, but the execution wasn't as half-assed.

im already mad at the game for being fucking dead because of GOATs. Not much could worsen it for me. maybe deleting mccree or nerfing winston, but i dont think those will happen. On lore side of things, making pharmercy canon would probably annoy me because mercy has an established relationship with genji, but that would just be a minor annoyance.

Yaoi is still gay, user.

>kek fags should grow a thicker skin they don't need to feel represented in a game to enjoy it
>REEEEE THERE'S FAGS IN THIS GAME I CAN'T PLAY IT

Attached: 1510167209318.jpg (262x263, 47K)

symmetra is the literal autist. hanzo probably sees getting dick as a punishment for his crimes. kek.
also michael chu confirmed in a korean panel genji still has his dick, which is retarded but it is what it is.
fair enough

Dare I say it, Life Is Strange.

Whateva, but if they do make a nigga gay then its better for it to be straight-acting as stereotypical behavior is annoying and only works in comedy, and even then rarely

fine if it serves the character but it's all a bit cringe when it's mentioned in one panel of a spin-off web comic no one would know about otherwise and people act as if it's the official end of homophobia forever or the announcement of the holocaust for straight people when it's not actually in the game at all and about as important as torb having loads of kids or whatever other useless trivia

Unless the game has dating or relationship mechanics, it's a shitty attention grab and pandering to identity groups to cover for lack of content and/or poor design.

Attached: 1539040518098.jpg (500x500, 85K)

>and about as important as torb having loads of kids or whatever other useless trivia
thats what gets me most. we literally see torb in an established relationship. we're told randomly and unprompted that junkrat likes milk tea bobba. its just nice trivia but people always single out the gay thing as "why do we need to know this?" Like, you dont need to know. But its told anyway to give more info of the character for fun.

I'm more of a bara guy, to be honest.

>But its told anyway to give more info of the character for fun.
It's not though. It's to earn good boy points.

being homosexual isn't a strong enough character trait to stand up on, but it shouldn't be ignored either
for a TF2 knockoff, you don't need to talk about any character traits, the story is secondary

overwatch was literally designed to be a game about diversity and different cultures/beliefs/lifestyles. Its expected you are told stuff as it goes on, such as symmetra having autism. the good boy points is a bonus, but the creators intent has been clear from the start. michael chu said very early on that he plans to reveal LGBT characters but not immediatley so that they dont get simplified as "the gay character". I think its a smart handling IMO, because tracer and soldier have such established personalities that them being gay isnt really a thought. so you can choose to ignore it, or you can appreciate it if youre like seeing that sort of thing (i personally like it, but thats just me).

So there should be no gay characters ever because every single one is for good boy points?

>getting mad because a character in a video game doesn't adhere to your criteria
Gamers are so entitled holy shit.

Do you want me to spell it out for you again?

not everyone who is gay is a bug catching promiscuous faggot. you can talk statistics all you want. blacks have huge crimerates etc etc but that doesnt stop Lee Everett from being recognized as a great fucking character. Not saying the OW characters are nearly as good but characters should be critiqued individually. That's how we get good characters like bayo and clem.

yea fuck off back to your special ed board dumbfuck

I don't give a shit. Nobody should.
It doesn't matter, none of this matters. You're just mad about stupid shit. Nobody would know about his sexuality if people weren't constantly talking about it.
It's just a stupid fucking video game character and some people wrote some text about this character saying that this fictional character has been in a relationship with some other fictional character that is male. Why the fuck would anyone care? Just play the fucking game for fucks sake.

If you want to LARP as a prude there are other sites you can go to

if you dont like that soldier is gay you can literally ignore it. its only mentioned in outside media. your gameplay experience doesnt change. no reason to throw shit. i would not like if a character was revealed to be muslim because that goes against my values, but that wouldnt make me REEEE or stop enjoying the game.

as long as there's no gay action or gay MCs I don't care

Seething

triggered aids patient

Theres no good reason I should know he's an homosexual in most situation unless is a flamboyant faglord
If it is justified, subtle and not added purely for sjw points I am fine with it

it got to the point Yea Forums shilled threads of soldier usage rate dropping on console "due to gay reveal" when they neglect that a patch came out that nerfed soldier on console and buffed mccree. fucking idiots.

Bayonetta is literally just some asshole grandfathered jap game dev's erotic fanfiction. She has no standout character, personality or history. Everything about her is some existing cliche slapped onto an idealized giraffe body. You could have gone with someone like Samus or Alice Liddell or Shodan or Kazooie, but you went with Bayonetta, literally just "Dante but she is all of my fetishes." What the fuck?

Attached: 1458270749246.gif (300x225, 1.07M)

>a patch came out that nerfed soldier on console and buffed mccree

Literally did not happen, except for an inconsequential helix adjustment. Soldier has been relatively untouched for so long that he is considered a terrible pick in comp thanks to shield meta.

>She has no standout character, personality or history
How can one man be so wrong? If you're even a man.

idk I like bayonetta as a concept because she has this aura of sexual deviancy but if you go into her character she really isn't a whore like you might think. Its a bit of a power play use of the sexual trope, and I think thats a nice subversion from the classical 'im just here for sex appeal' situation.

/thread
This shit board loves talking about drama.

>vs stereotypical gay behavior?
Are there any games where the gay character is actually dying of aids?

mccree is in direct competition to soldier when it comes to usage rate. when mccree usage increases, soldier drops. thats just how it is. and the helix adjustment is more of a direct nerf on console where auto aim is more powerful. mccree's CDs were adjusted in same patch.

t. hitscan faggot who cant quit this fucking game

You're one of those morons who thinks that gay men are all effeminate and aggressively hit on everything with a penis, aren't you.

Why are you playing hitscan in a tank spam meta?

i havent touched comp in months on my hitscan account. i have an account soley for maintanking and while I enjoy manky, I am trash at rein and i want this meta to be fucking over. support ults need to fucking be nerfed. im sick of teamfights being determined by whether or not our team has trans and enemy doesnt.

i dont have a problem with ults like shatter that require good angles and enemy not falling for bait. its mainly support ults (mainly zen ult) and sombra's EMP that I hate. But sombra's EMP is like the only counter to goats outside goats so it has to stay for now. Tracer pulse bomb, monkey ult, and ana ult (post nerf) dont really have this problem.

if you give a fuck that they aren't there, you're an sjw

if you give a fuck that they are there, you're a /pol/tard

an interesting game, the only winning move is to not play

I'm for everything that upsets /pol/flakes. Especially when it doesn't make any actual difference in the game in question.

Attached: 1412615124565.jpg (696x720, 30K)

the winning move is to play the game if you enjoy the gameplay, or not play it if you dont. this comes with the reasonable behavior of appreciating the LGBT inclusion if you like it, or ignoring it if you dont, realizing it does not affect your gameplay.

oh no im not saying don't play the video game, I'm saying don't play the game of arguing about gays and minorities in vidya. play the video games, don't waste your time arguing about who is represented in them.

I'd rather have being gay just being a pointless side detail than the defining character trait. I'm not comfortable talking about my sex life to others, especially strangers, and being gay is something i neither deny nor openly advertised if not asked about it first. Characters for whom being gay is just "pointless" and irrelevant represent are better representation for me than virtue signalling rainbow-haired pride paraders

The dude in Deus Ex Mankind Divided being gay was alright because you only even find out by invading his house and looking at his pictures, but considering the rest of the politics in the game I still can't shake the feeling that it's just virtue signalling. Maybe that's just an internalized issue though.

Also if you give a fuck that they are there, you just give the SJWs more fuel to try even harder to do whatever they do. They see the negative attention as "prove" that their "cause" is just

I guess you're right, yeah. I don't know why I would expect Yea Forums to be anything other than against anyways. Ive always been a big soldier fan since release and him being gay was a surprise, but a pleasant one IMO

I just assume every game character I'm playing is gay

Attached: 1428849746465.jpg (563x535, 66K)

>I'd rather have being gay just being a pointless side detail than the defining character trait.
But the reveal that 76 is gay was YEARS after the game came out. He has plenty of other lore and already a defined character way before that. How is it not a pointless side detail in his case? It's just mentioned in a story on the overwatch website. You'd never find out if all you did was play the game.

when i first watched TTGL, i was worried that gay character would just be an offensive joke, but he turned out to be super competent and awesome, aside from some weird molestation jokes. Is this a similar instance in this game? This dude looks like a stereotype, but im willing to see what hes like.

They actually put effort in Tracers gay reveal with that Christmas comic.
Soldier 76 was just wordswordswordswordstillhavefeelngsfrohimwordswords.

Most straight people base their life around sexuality. What do you think straight guys talk about most in their free time? Just looks at how many threads in the catalog are about tits or sexy vidya girls. Also media and advertisement is built upon sexuality. Why is it suddenly bad when gays do it?
Sexuality is not to be hidden or ashamed of.

I wasn't passing judgment on the 76 reveal affirmatively or otherwise because I don't expect anything from overwatch to be sincere, thus how they handle a gay character isn't very relevant to me. They're a corporation trying to make money, I'd just as soon look to them for accurate representation as I'd go to mcdonalds for a salad

>Just looks at how many threads in the catalog are about tits or sexy vidya girls
while i dont disagree with you, Yea Forums users are hardly from the norm and plenty are sexually frustrated people

yo mcdonalds salad is actually pretty dope. dont hate.

Based and redpilled

>Ree there aren't any fags in this game I can't play it

That's pretty much exactly the case here. When they first introduced him I thought I was gonna hate him, but he ended up being my favorite character in the game. He had one of the best character arcs, and was overall one of the most competent characters in the game. He was also one of the most useful party members up until endgame.

I wasn't born with a rainbow flag in hand, there was a very long period of time before I started realizing I was gay, before I was comfortable with it, and then even today most aren't aware mainly because I haven't been approached. The point being I have plenty of firsthand experience with how straight guys talk. For my group of friends it was mostly sports, video games, school, or local events. The extent of most discussion of sexuality was "yeah I've done it lol" and acknowledging that celebrities like Megan Fox were hot, and it still was not something that came up often

The most obnoxious thing people do is tell me that I'm ashamed of or hiding my true identity just because I don't introduce myself by listing who I have sex with or how I have sex with them. It's very condescending. I don't claim that it's bad for guys to be openly gay if that's what they really want to do but that's not the kind of person I am nor want to be

How do you know some NPC is a sodomite ?
They tell it to you.
Why are they telling it to you ?
Because WHY WON'T YOU LET ME PLAY VIDEO GAMES I DON'T WANT TO BRING ABOUT THE FIFTH REICH I JUST WANT TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES LEAVE ME ALONE ALREADY DAMN IT

I want more gay characters in gaming so it can be normalized instead of being a headline. I can't wait until the demand for heteros will be a thing.

>fifth
d-did I miss something

EU.

Being openly gay is not introducing yourself as gay. It's about being comfortable in your sexuality just as straight guys are in conversation. What you are saying is that you keep it hidden.

I dont care about faggots. Im sure in my sexuality

Attached: 32f.jpg (680x794, 33K)

damn. I need to check the game out then.

>LiS
name one canon gay character. fanfiction doesnt count.

>stereotypical gay behavior
Gay characters should charge towards the enemy ass first or fire with cock-shaped guns

>What are your thoughts on homosexuals in video games?
I don't care unless I'm forced to be in awe of their gayness and accept them as some kind of god or brave individual for forcing me to be aware of it and then reminding me of it as though I have the memory of a fish.
>Straight-acting vs. stereotypical.
Stereotypes are funny and I don't care what people say to the contrary about it, if its for comedy then play it up to the extreme and be outrageous with it.
If its meant to be a serious game then make them act in a way that makes sense to their character, their sexuality isn't the most important thing about them and should not be the focal point of their character.
If the only thing I can tell about somebody is that they are gay then they are a bad character, ditto for otherwise.

I don't follow Overwatch and don't care to so I have nothing to say on that particular matter.

Gay until proven otherwise

LOOMIS

Didn't even read the whole thing, still a great explanation.

Introducing gay characters without triggering the general public is a huge challenge. If you introduce a gay character in a game where the norm used to be heterosexual characters it starts to be viewed as pandering, but on the same coin, having said character only being homosexual to be their defining, distinct trait to represent diversity and to have no strong impact on the game/story feels weak.

I think the best way to combat this is to make a character sexually ambiguous (not androgynous) unless it's a romance thing or something. Shrug.

Attached: 1550447021888.png (483x368, 260K)

There's just no winning

I feel like the best way to make a character gay or non-straight is to make it ambiguous. In a way that people doubt whether the chracter is straight but the devs never directly confirm anything and leave things up to interpretation.

That's the only way of avoiding that damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation you described.
I'm surprised that devs almost never this approach, desu. I guess it's relatively hard to be pulled off properly.

Attached: 1536639368272.jpg (533x617, 77K)

My Nigga

Attached: 1550772331927.png (741x479, 358K)

I think it really depends on the context of the worlds, ip's and how those characters are handled.
I've noticed that people are vastly more welcoming of gay characters if they are accepted by the world and not made to stand out.
Be it in television, books or games.
But you are right the situation is difficult.

That could work for a lot of devs but not all of them, take a studio like Bioware. People have come to expect romance options in Bioware games, to the point it was one of the more repeated complaints about Anthem.

I'd like a video game with a gay protagonist and a romantic subplot. But I'd also like it to not feel like an agenda is being pushed.

Yeah it definitely wouldn't work for Bioware games where you HAVE to clearly define their sexual orientation. But in most games with some kind of narrative where you can't romance characters, I think it would be the best approach.

In the end, no game developer/writer/artist should be pressured to add gay characters in their work.
Period.

So semi-related evolutionary speaking how the fuck are there even gay people.

I dont enjoy it when others give sex life details unsolicited so I dont know why you think Id be doing it myself or how yku have it in mind that its a flaw or negative in any way that I dont get sexual or talk about my conquests to people who dont care

Do you actually feel like you are being pressured to include fags? By who exactly?

Would you be opposed to PDA of you had a boyfriend?

These fucking SJW's man. I need help.

Attached: 1550328002647.png (449x449, 377K)

What makes you think anyone was pressured to do this?

I was about to say The Last of Us but then you added agenda pushing.

>But in most games with some kind of narrative where you can't romance characters,
That would depend on if that story has intended pairings or not. Just a straight-up adventure would work fine to those end but nowadays people are pushing for explicit relationships in games.
I don't know why.

In the end we can only hope that more vidya going forwards drops romance plots if they aren't a major motivator for certain characters.

Not him but PDAs are unpleasant for everyone.

I like the fanart but I'm still not gonna pay $60 to play mobashit.

Attached: tumblr_o8dt2z3VX61s57thho3_1280.jpg (800x1160, 157K)

>In the end, no game developer/writer/artist should be pressured to add characters they don't want, like or need in their work. Be they gay, straight, jew, gentile, back, while or any other thing.

It worked well for Greece, I blame Rome.
If being gay is genetic then there would be such a thing as genetic throwback where recessive genes would come up somewhere down the line.

>but nowadays people are pushing for explicit relationships in games. I don't know why.
I honestly think that's worse than gay characters. I don't need romances in my games.
It's the same shit with action movies where there is always one shit ass forced romance sideplot so when men drag their gfs and wives into action flics they got something to care about but I don't think it makes any fucking difference.

bi master race here. feels good to just be a normal dude that everyone loves to be around and that i can fuck either gender and am not a social autist. :^)

Attached: 14682283.jpg (300x300, 34K)

Isn't D.Va an idol/livestreamer/mechapilot? I thought having a boyfriend was a huge no-no for idols?

I like them if they're interesting characters.

Attached: 1549229674340.jpg (691x950, 112K)

I don't care about what sexual orientation a character is. If it's related to the story it can be interesting if the character is nuanced. If the character is literally a 3d model that shoots bullets and spams one liners I don't see how it's sexuality matters, and it's annoying to see it happen when there's an obvious agenda. I say this as a bisexual faggot

Not being a social autist has nothing to do with being bi though. Cause I'm both.

Attached: 1418346893742.jpg (408x439, 50K)

If they really wanted to and makes them feel appreciated I wouldnt mind, Im not going to hide them in the closet or anything. Its not something i personally would go out of my way for but i believe relationships are give a little get a little.

>he uses Yea Forums but also claims to be a nazi

me too user, me too.

Yea Forumss gotten a massive boner for desperately proving failures in the gameing industry to be to do with the "SJW agenda", it's like if they can prove it to themselves they're suddenly validated in all their cult political nonsense.
Problem is there's always a perfectly reasonable explanation to the side of their anti-sjw reasonings, it's gotten to a point where they're really deluding themselves into thinking most people give enough of a shit to actually drop a game because of some gay character or women in a warzone and so on so forth.
Deluding themselves into thinking being an epic homophobe/racist/whatever is now officially mainstream.

Nothing wrong with gay characters, I only care about interesting characters that were designed from the ground up as such, instead of shoe-horning random things for the sake of it. If 76 and Tracer were gay from the start, nobody would really give a shit. But Blizzard added those traits after the fact not because those characters were stale (they were and still are), but because they wanted to look "woke".

Agreed almost whole heartedly, though in some cases the romance plot does add something to the film even if only because it gives the protagonist a personal stake.
All too often is the protagonist somebody that just shows up or gets involved because somebody tells them to.

Not always but sometimes, a dash of romance can help the film not suck.
I'd argue that Hardcore Henry was a great film because of the romance subplot. Even if it was "rescue hot wife".

Fuck I wish I was bi, you guys have it good. Why did I have to be a gay born in a small town goddammit.

Attached: 1526719295456.jpg (616x616, 90K)

I mean, Apex Legends is a big hit, and it's all the "SJW" character design that Yea Forums says always fails. By the way I also hate that game's characters, not because they're "diverse", just because they're all ugly as sin. Damn western designers make it seem like beauty is a lost art.

Pathetic.

its alright, user. being bi is great, yeah, but people annoy me so i'm single regardless of having access to both man and woman. i just dont care for relationship crap. you'll find someone, maybe try and move away towards a larger city?

Attached: 1503123463213.png (500x500, 58K)

No one complains when it's a straight romance though.

how are you not over this

although he has to be easily the worst gay character in vidya thats true
not sure how chu manages to make every single character sound so poorly written, everything is half assed

>nobody would really give a shit
This is pure bullshit. It would have been just the same crying.

>maybe try and move away towards a larger city?
I don't like big cities, I'm much more of a small town kind of person. It's fine though, I'll just keep playing this waiting game until someone comes along.

I hated this reveal because it ruined my 100 page Soldier 76 x Ana fanfic.

Do you guys think it actually increased their sales/rep? And if it did, did it do so because Overwatch has a big LGBT fanbase already?

legitimate question here: what are examples of minority characters inserted to serve an obvious agenda vs ones where it was pulled off successfully?

Reinhardt is my husbando.

Attached: 1482527525835.jpg (1280x1305, 246K)

I don't mind. If you feel uncomfortable because it's "forced" then you're just a closeted faggot

>MVC:I comes out
>"Characters are functions." The appearance, style, personality of the character don't matter as long as they play the same as some favorite character from MVC2 did. Gameplay supreme
>Yea Forums loses its shit and rages
>Apex Legends comes out
>character bio says one of the guys has a bf
>wtf why does this matter who gives a shit about the characters personalities and personal life jesus you don't need to know this shit only gameplay matters fucking pandering garbage

Attached: 1287963906462.jpg (168x148, 6K)

That wholes games writing is lame as shit so of course his reveal as being gay was going to be lame as shit too.
People getting major triggered is ludicrous though, I'm just glad it didn't sustain as long as the tracer is gay outrage.

1: Western games
2: Japanese games

>treating Yea Forums as a collective
i agree with your point but wew lad

What does Mugen have to do with your post?

I think it probably bolstered their existing fanbase, it was clearly targeted at them anyway because the only way to find this out (beyond media outlets publishing stories) was to be so interested in the game already that you were reading their comics.
People who just play overwatch wouldn't know soilder is gay.

was meant to reply to

I don't care

You're right, he is my husbando.

Attached: C9HKrxfUQAAO_yG.jpg (600x793, 87K)

I'm a bi double virgin, because I'm ugly, unlikable in general and afraid of intimacy
Double the depression fuck yeah

This. I don't get why there need to be canon romances in stuff like Overwatch anyway. Just let the fans fill in the blanks.

I dont give a fuck, i just want to play the game.
Or at least i used to, all this forced diversity is actually making me hate it.
Im so tired of it that i go out of my way to avoid titles with these agendas.

What even is this supposed agenda? Sounds like a buzzword pushed by closeted faggots struggling with their identity

If it's not a pron game why would I care about a character's sexuality?
Saying "dis gay lul" for a character just to pander to people is stupid and irritating. Just like it would be saying that a specific character is autistic and have them do nothing that resembles autism. But nobody really cares about the biggest target for videogames anymore so they go with the gay shit.

I don't mind it but it's funny how LGBT people are like
>I need gay/bi/lesbian characters so I can RELATE to them

Is sexuality really the only point that makes you relate to a character? Do I relate to Torbjorn more because he's apparently heterosexual?

>Forced.
Depends of the definition, some would argue things like Shadowrun are guilty of this in spades, specifically the one set in China.
>Successful.
Depends on what you mean successful.
Lee from the Walking Dead or Dr. Shen from X-COM are examples.

>Do I relate to Torbjorn more because he's apparently heterosexual?
No, you relate because you're 5'9 you fucking manlet.

>"straight-acting"
what the fuck does that mean

Why is this argument only brought up when the character is gay?

Gays are horny too. Its canon fap material.

Do you think it was worth the shitstorm that ensued?

Who needs canon when you can just go on tumblr for all that gay fanart/fanfic.

Acting like a normal man and not like a flamboyant faggot dressing weirdly, gesturing in a feminine way and talking with a lisp while calling other guys "sweetie" or "honey", to make an extreme example.
Just someone where you could never guess he was gay unless someone told you.

You guys keep getting it wrong. It's not about relating to the character. it's about having representation. It validates your existence as a gay person, and it feels good because they're a minority so seeing someone like them once in a while is nice. Straight people are the majority so it's less important for them.

i think americans brainwashing their kids with the propaganda that faggotry is normal is fucking insane

it's like finding diamonds in minecraft, it never happens. it's like a rare drop in grandma's pay to win mobile game

Because nobody takes a character and says "this guy is straight", because nobody cares. It's only gay people who need validation (yeah, yeah, not all but there's a push for this and you should know it).
It would be a different story to include things like they've done in Dragon's Age where you can have homosexual relationships. That's alright because it's part of the content of the game. If you're not gay you shouldn't care because it's not forced into you, if you're gay you can have your gay moment. If you want to skip romance at all you can do it as well. But it all have a context.

>kids being aware gays exist will make them gay
I wasn't aware you had to be taught to be straight

It literally doesn't matter but normalfags throw hissy fits over it because they're literal npcs falling for marketing identity politics used to pull the veil over on actual gaming issues.

It's been happening for longer in some part of Europe and they have far less problems with mental illness than people in America

Attached: 1434673751320.gif (200x200, 2K)

Depends on how it's done desu.
If, say, there was a new op released in Siege and his bio told us that he was broken up by the death of his husband, it would just be a part of his background that helped us get to know him.
However, if it said that he was once in a relationship with a Y1 operator Kapkan, it would seem random and a part of retroactive pandering since it wasn't mentioned in Kapkan's bio.

I don't understand why white people care so much about fictional characters taking it up the ass. I only play puzzle games now.

Probably, blizz has their target demo and it's clearly not people who'd be upset about that kind of thing.
People who were truly deeply upset about it probably weren't playing overwatch in the first place.
I mean they knew someone would rage because it blew up pretty huge when tracer was revealed to be gay, but I'm betting the places they target as their demo actually liked it, so they ignore places like Yea Forums who was major buttmad about it at the time.
All that social media buzz and people passing it around to be pleased/outraged over it just served as free marketing.
If you're the type to hate this shit you'd actually be better served avoiding discussion on it at all costs, but the internet has never been good at not drawing attention to stuff they don't like.

So you have to have a character scream out that they're gay in order to have your validation? Why not just leave their sexualities non-specified?

It's not fair to say that there's a way to act gay. With Soldier 76 and Gibraltar, they had mention of boyfriends in their backstories, Soldier's dedication to his cause interfering with his personal life and Gibraltar's boyfriend being his partner in crime. It's part of the backstory that we normally want to know about and even if you think it's trivial, video game booklets had little bits of trivial info that we used to not care about. No one was upset that the hobbies of Guilty Gear characters were listed next to their age and height.

And i wouldnt mind if it was done with a purpose.
Like why are you telling me this character is gay? Is it important to the story? To his character development? Or are you just slapping an identity on him to appease a demographic?
Instead we get the casual "oh he also sucks dicks" and nothing else.

Its not an issue to you because you didnt grow up surrounded by medis making fun of you. Gay characters have always either been used as 2 dimensional jokes, or as progressive "liberated" flamers so to have a character represented as just normal is a good feeling. No one expects you to understand, nor does anyone want your approval, they just want you to fuck off and leave them be

I think you're insane lol

>Because nobody takes a character and says "this guy is straight", because nobody cares
Exactly, and no one should care when they are gay either, yet people like you complain only when it's a gay character.
How are straight characters important to the story? Where were the people complaining when the other characters were revealed to be straight?

I dont give zero fucks. so if people want them and enjoy them for the pandering that it is. Then whatever let them have their fun nuggets aint really hurting nobody aside from easily triggered nerds so much faggier than them gays themselves enjoy gay shit they can easily ignore and not be affected by unless one actually tries to go and look for it and shit. Which is really just sad to see.

Tbh the Overwatch crowd was freaking out at the implication of Mccree having banged Ashe because muh gay shipping.

>So you have to have a character scream out that they're gay in order to have your validation?
That has literally never happened. I know you're exaggerating, but there has never been a prominent game character whose only personality trait was just "I'M GAY"
>Why not just leave their sexualities non-specified?
I don't know what that has to do with anything. There's nothing wrong with that, but that's different than having the character identify as gay or bi.

Completely irrelevant because i only play competitive games to assert dominance when im not out fucking your waifu

you probably don't notice it but when a character falls for some chick that is the game literally going "this character is straight"
but even when a game has no romantic plot points they're usually assumed straight unless they specifically signal otherwise which is why its not usually something writers feel the need to specifically point out but do when a character is gay, because otherwise they just would never be able to establish such a thing and the audience would assume them to be straight

Defining ambiguity, leaving the sexual orientation to be interpreted for fans is a good way, and I like it, but it still is complex, because if someone brings the possibility that one character could be gay or which could be his boyfriend, just for fun, for discussion or for whatever, this same small suggestion is instantly disapproved by majority, with the reason being that "you would expect that everyone is straight by default". Heteronormativity is something induced into the blood of other people.

It's really a complex situation. I believe the only way we can win this challenge, is to simply NOT to play the challenge. In other words, don't give our ears to theses that always complain. There's no form to please everyone. It's no use, give up. You can have the feedback of the general consensus, of course, but you CAN'T form the consensus, through hearing every single person that lives on this world.

So, just go for it. Create characters with their own traits and own sexual orientation (or leave it blank, if you wish). Create them as how you wish, as long you know what you're doing.

Attached: victory.jpg (934x776, 47K)

I think the problem is that you don't understand the difference between forced/shoved and contextualized because I alredy said I don't mind homosexual content in videogames (as there's alredy in many).

This guy actually has a point though But I was talking about the broader matter that OP talked about (thoughts on homosexuality in videogames) although since Soldier is in his pic related I guess it gave the impression I was talking about that particular case.

What's wrong with assuming everyone is straight? What's wrong with assuming everyone is gay or bi? Why would the writers need to define who's who, especially in a multiplayer game like Overwatch?

The point is that unless the story requires it, sexuality should be at most an afterthought.
So whether or not the character is straight or gay, it shouldnt matter for the most part, instead its becoming a major focus, taking away from other important shit.

>Republican conservative governor Bevin: Video games shouldn't be protected by freedom of speech and should be censored as they turn kids into shooters and degrade women
>Trump: Maybe he's on to something...
>Anita: Playing video games won't turn you into a misogynist
>You: Playing gay characters will turn kids gay

I literally don't give a shit what my character does with his/her dick while I'm not playing the damn game.

It's not a major focus at all though. It's a single panel in a side online comic companion to the game yet you are acting as if 76 was running around with dildos in his hands

>It's damned if you do, damned if you don't
It isn't really. The problem is that a company like Blizzard slaps "gay" as an adjective on Soldier 76, but they do it to drum up sales and be talked about. They're trying to stay relevant and it's a quick, easy way to do it.

In media that actually incorporates sexuality at all, relationships tend to be a source of conflict. Soldier 76 wouldn't merely be gay - his ex lover might be a hired gun for the other side. Maybe his boyfriend is also a character in the game and they form some sort of duo mechanics wise. Whatever. The point is, the relationship adds to the story instead of being a marketing thing.

There is no simple solution, but that's because being gay is out of the norm. It's like being Jewish. Shows incorporate a Jewish character all the time, but it comes up as a comedic commentary on Jewish traditions or family life. The simple thing is to say "Solider 76 is Jewish! Aren't we inclusive! Talk about us!" The more challenging thing is to know a single fucking thing about the traditions and then make commentary on the life.

Stereotypical gay people are cringe in vidya and irl

Attached: 1549484505927.jpg (590x720, 73K)

>Soldier has boyfriend
There was uproar with this, because the revealing of his sexual orientation was coincided with the recent polemics and controversies Blizzard was suffering, that shows the greediness, questionable decisions and the incompetency. Because of this, many people assume that Blizzard was revealing 76's sexual orientation, as a form to shield the huge criticism against the company.

About the Tracer's case, I don't know what to say about this, as I didn't accompany with it.

>you probably don't notice it but when a character falls for some chick that is the game literally going "this character is straight"
No, they're "literally" not, because it's implied.
If in DA you have a homosexual relationship with a character you don't need the game or the developers to explicitly say "this character is gay or bi" because it just happened within a context. That can be better or worse written but it makes sense.
But doing like they did in Baldur's Gate: Dragonspear and have a character say "Oh well, you see, I'm kinda trans" seems forced as shit (and the developers admitted it) specially in a world where you can change sex using magic, you don't need to be "trans" nor that concept really exist there.
I'm not talking about Soldier in particular, I'm talking about companies that say "this character is now gay" even if it was straight before in the lore. Why is that an important thing to change? What part of the character has changed aside from the nature of the whole he puts his peepee on?

This relies on cynical assumptions though. Soldier's past wasn't finalized before the game was a few years old, so to bring it up now that he had a boyfriend isn't completely unbelievable.

>Yea Forums: being gay shouldnt be their whole character, this is pandering
>Also Yea Forums: uhhh what part of the character was changed besides being gay? Why did this have to happen??? This is pandering
Bazinga

>because the revealing of his sexual orientation was coincided with the recent polemics and controversies Blizzard was suffering
Wasn't it months after blizzcon? They've been having problems for years. It's weird that this is only permissable for companies on an upswing.

It's tricky when treating Yea Forums as a hivemind, but bigots and the overly cynical are sometimes indistinguishable.

I think the fact that people have these horrible reactions to literally any amount of gay anything even being touched upon in video games justifies the need for it to exist in the first place. All of these people saying "I don't care or have an issue with it, unless it actually happens" more or less showcase why it's so important.

In OSRS there was a pride event that was completely optional and was no more than like six tiles wide and the community went absolutely apeshit over it. So many people said it was playing politics and forced inclusion, and basically that they had no problems with gays but that they shouldn't be in the game. There were posts from incels false flagging as gay people saying the event was stupid etc. It was horrendous.

In FFXIV there was a quest given out by a guy who talked about noticing something happening to a monster race in a dungeon that needed saving with his boyfriend or something. It was quite literally one line of text you could have skipped through or forgotten about and some people still fucking lost it. So whatever. Clearly it's necessary on some level.

Attached: amazing.jpg (453x439, 27K)

Exactly. You're almost getting there.
If making a big deal out of your sexuality (aka identifying as a gay person for purposes other than dating) is shallow. Where you put your genitals shouldn't be a defining factor of your personality (even if gay people often display certain mannerisms).
Therefore the only reason to make a certain character homosexual is pandering to homosexual people. And unless it's a porn game why would you pander to people's sexual orientation?
Making a gay character is, in all cases, pandering to a certain demographic.
The difference is when it feels forced (flat out bad PR) or it's contextualized (like RPGs that want characters to roleplay their sexual preferences in game).

>Make Mercy a Poison-style pre-op tranny
>Implying this wouldn't make my penis harder

Unless they went the full route of 'Nah they mutilated their dick and it's now fucked up inside of them and they have a frankengina' then yeah, that would piss me off.

Is Lucio married? Is Roadhog seeing someone? Is Mei seeing anyone?

You don't know, and they didn't feel it was important to inform you because there's no conflict and no story there. Overwatch already has enough empty nobodies filling the roster, it doesn't add anything to say that Reaper meets with some girl in a hotel on Thursdays unless she were his contact or something - but even then, contact for fucking what? Overwatch barely knows what it is or what it's doing.

This shit's all marketing. The characters are just tropes meant to appeal to kids, there's not much beneath the surface.

>Tracer's case
Also marketing. They spent some time on the wind-up talking about how "somebody in the game might be gay! Oh my, who could it be?"

Most people assumed it was Roadhog and Junkrat, because they're the only real duo and it's the only situation that would make sense as a result. But no, Tracer has a girlfriend, but only in the comic, and she doesn't do anything.

Please discuss among your friends and remind them about Overwatch™.

>My sexuality is OK (gay) but other people's (asexual or incels) isn't!
>A forced quest in FFXIV received some complaints... Yet nobody seemed to care about a perfectly contextualized pansexual character that can go into a homosexual relationship in FFIX
Wew!

A lot of the banter and costumes hint at lore explored in the movie and comic. Soldier's trope is that he's too busy saving the world for a stable relationship. It characterizes him. It's all marketing like Heavy's love of sandvich and his gun; unnecessary but meant to be appealing. To suddenly draw a line and say "marketing is bad now" is to dishonest.

I have no problems with a character being gay/bi/whatever. However, I can't stand the ensuing circlejerk from the LGBT community that comes with it.

>YASSS QUEEN 20-GAYTEEN HERE WE COME
>this game is for the gays now, straights not welcome anymore
>ahhh I love dicks and I love the fact that he loves dicks
>dozens of articles like This Character From A Multiplayer Shooter Is Gay (and why it's a good thing)
It's just annoying.

>Soldier 76's gay lover is the same as Heavy's sandvich and gun!
Heavy's Sandvich and gun are both in the actual game. You can use them yourself. If you could play as 76's boyfriend, you might have a point, but you don't.

A better comparison would be to look at Heavy's sister, who first sleeps with Soldier as a joke. The reader is led to believe that she's been cooped up so long she'd jump into bed with anyone, but then she sticks with the group and becomes a proactive part of the team. It turns out she's every bit as crazy as any of the mercs, and at one point cuts off her own hand to escape a pair of handcuffs. She winds up playing an involved and endearing role, to the point where if they made a TF3 she'd fit right in if they could find a place for her in the game mechanics.

Soldier 76's boyfriend is nobody. He's nothing. He's a marketing idea.

>Incel is a sexual orientation

Attached: 1419710760888.jpg (480x542, 23K)

Both are shitty attitudes for dumb retards, but which one is more common

>It's bad that people call my sexual orientation a mental disorder
>I can call other people names due to their sexual habits
No matter how you put it it's at least hypocritical.

>Incel is a sexuality
Are you pretending to be autistic or are you actually this fucking stupid

Also he later admitted he wasn't even gay at all. He simply stated that because he couldn't get with girls, that made him "mildly gay" and that he could get with guys if he wanted.

He's a part of Soldier's characterization. We wouldn't be having this conversation if it were a female or left ambiguous, but because someone saw a picture of him standing next to a male and made a comment about how he sacrificed his love life for greater causes it's suddenly nothing but marketing in a bad way.

It's judging people for a sexual habit regardless, you retard. You're the one being autistic over semantics because it's convenient to you even if you inadvertedly proved my point right after.

>If Soldier 76 were dating a woman, it wouldn't be news
Yeah. No fucking duh. Hence why it's marketing. Because it's gay and Blizzard wanted to inform everyone 76 is gay in this really inelegant fashion, it's controversial. It's controversial because some people think homosexuality is a sin, but it's also controversial because it feels cheap and sleazy.

There wouldn't be a big brewhaw from the company about Soldier 76 being a shitty romantic partner if there wasn't some marketing advantage to it. Your argument doesn't undermine my point, it reinforces it.

Attached: 1468455856930.gif (500x375, 464K)

I think this is somewhat missing the point. To minority populations (sex, race, sexuality...etc), characters don't have to be relatable to be enjoyable. It's just weird to not have any characters that see have your trait anywhere. It's a desire to feel included and feel normal. It's not a selfish desire to "take over" things or to have more and more characters like themselves around.

Attached: diff.png (451x359, 58K)

they have literal resurrection magic. they probably can give a dude an actual working vagina.

the uproar for tracer was bigger, which makes me think it wasnt a shield tactic, but it could have been. the lore was happening eventually, the timing was just unfortunate

apex legends is great because of this. literal black people, LGBT people, and stronk womyn and it got 10 mil players in a week.

>Sexual habits = sexuality!

Being an incel isn't a "sexual habit" and the fact that you're attempting to equate it by casting it into the same category with "sexuality" proves my point even more so. You legitimately have no idea what you're talking about. It's not semantics when the meanings are completely different.

Stop throwing out the fact you think it's "hypocritical" and all this other nonsense. You look foolish. The comparison doesn't even exist except in your head.

I say thanks every time in chat when someone kills me when I'm Soldier 76 in mystery heroes.

>I want to characterize you as foolish so I'll say it outloud
You don't even realize your delusion. Remember when homosexuality was considered a mental disorder? Now stfu kid, you don't have the smarts.

>did soldier pushup blowjobs emote in-game
>get kicked from team for homophobia
>soldier revealed as gay
whose the fag now, fuckers?
its me

Hes not gay. Just because blizzard says he is doesnt mean anything. Blizzard is spreading false rumors

Unless it's some sort of single player game where a character being gay can affect the story, I don't need to know their sexuality. 76 being gay doesn't change the game at all and is just done to make the part of their community who wants more LGTB reps happy.

Good taste

>No argument
Back to the cave with you, incel. Maybe if you label yourself as 'moderately gay' you'll have a better chance next time.

Ahem.
I have something to say.

Attached: IncomingHonk.jpg (641x549, 30K)

His playrate dropped a straight 50% after the announcement. It definitely affects the game.

>If you could play as 76's boyfriend, you might have a point, but you don't.
Its a good thing Reaper is gonna become Soldier's lover later on. Screencap this. There's a specific cinematic for this in 2 years time.

>Gay is approved by the regimee
>Incel is to distingish those we hate!
Literal nazi

>soldier and tracer not written gay
>years after game comes out
>”OH YEAH THEYRE GAY NOW”
????

This is often a hard thing to explain to white straight cis males, or at least ones that deny that their social group is the representative default as it stands. People who shriek at "Forced diversity" at anything trying to have broader representation unknowingly agree with that notion. That's why they act threatened. Leave them alone long enough, and you'll hear dogwhistles like "great replacement" pop up.

they dangled it like a carrot over people's heads, and just happened to drop it during a decline. It was the worst way they could possibly handle it

>Shifting goal posts because no real argument
>Throwing out nazi as an insult
yikes

>he doesn't know

it wasnt oh yeah. Michael chu established from the start there were LGBT characters but they wanted to give time before reveal so that people dont simplify them to 'the gay character'. Now people associate tracer with a specific spunky personality who has a cute gf. And nobody even knows soldier is gay unless they saw it on game news sites or actively read the lore. hes still that cheesy dad figure whose probably got PTSD from wartime. taking dick doesnt change that. if anything it subverts tropes that all gays are hookup twinks.

I made my arguments alredy, and I'm right.
You are only trying to depict a world where you are not wrong. Can't argue with a mentally ill that denies reality.

thats a fair arguement. the timing was really unfortunate and frankly the writing in the story was awful. i would have preferred a comic and have it tied during an event where things are more positive, so people have less reason to believe it was a cop out reveal. i know it was intended to be revealed for a while, but the timing fucks over the impact.

You have no made any arguments. Therefore you are wrong. :)
You are desperately trying to make a point that doesn't make sense. Keep it moving, retard.

stop shitflinging anons. i love you both regardless of your sexual habits. :)

It's looking like it's only marketing if it's gay.

>a big brewhaw from the company about Soldier 76
There wasn't much of a brewhaw. I was playing the game and it doesn't tell you. The comic isn't forced on you and you have to go out of your way to find articles or tweets where they confirm it.

It causes insecure Drumpftards seethe, so it's always welcome. As much as they go on about how SJWs get triggered easily, they're far easier to trigger.

>It's a subversion!
I don't know about you, but I'm honestly getting tired of media using "subversion" as a lazy way to spice up boring stories. Overwatch lore is boring and dumb. Making a character gay to "subvert expectations" doesn't make it a better story.

Their boss is a talking monkey and their base is on the moon. Telling me a character is gay didn't subvert my expectations because I expect nothing from Overwatch in the first place. These people are brightly colored commercials - Soldier 76 wears primary blue and red to battle. They don't come across as real people with human emotions.

Again, you need to believe I didn't, but I alredy did. 100% mental illness craving attention that didn't get from daddy.

>"straight-acting"

Wait, so acting normal is now "straight acting"? Who the fuck are you people. It's like when ghetto niggers tell a normal black dude that he's "acting white". No, they're acting normal and not putting their bullshit on frontal display.

Gay dudes that act "straight" are just normal people that happen to suck dick instead of puss. Retards like OP need to be gassed.

Attached: 1508443268385.png (715x560, 281K)

>"no u"
Seething. You've misspelled 'already' twice now, you know. Tell me again about how you think sexuality and being an incel are the same thing. *

It was in quotation marks to emphasize how stupid a term it is you stupid fucker.

the subversive trope character designs isnt to make the story more interesting. its to make the characters unique or just to give them nice fluff to attach to them. ana is an old egyptian crime fighting lady who puts people to sleep with darts, loves tea, and has a native american ex husband she left behind after she was shot by widowmaker. this is hardly matters in the grand story. but its nice to know and is just in good fun.

soldier leaving behind his to be fiance and ana leaving behind her family so they can both pursue the greater good shows a lot about sacrifice and the pain that comes from it. I find it interesting. its just sprinkles of stuff, because OW lore is very underdeveloped, but I like it personally.

Sauce?

>I can't win this!
>I'll pull my misspelling card, that'll show him!
Surely you have strong points. That smiley face at the end showed how secure you are too! Go you!

>It's only marketing if it's gay.
No, you summer child. It's marketing if it's COUNTER CULTURE. Counter culture has been a big aspect of sales in media for decades. By promoting a counter-cultural concept, you can get people talking about your product.

I don't know if you're old enough to remember when Corn Nuts - a corn-based snack they sold at gas stations - went XTREME and described themselves as "CORN GONE BAD".

It's retarded when Corn Nuts does it and what I'm telling you is that Soldier 76's sexuality is basically one of the only things they have established about the character because otherwise he's simply ripped off from Clint Eastwood's later career and has nothing else going on.

It's marketing. That's all it is. There's no story here. This isn't literature. There isn't something somebody wanted to tell you. They wanted you to know about Overwatch®, especially now because their player base is shrinking, so they released this announcement to get people talking.

Nice taste.

>Still no argument.
We can do this all day user. I know how desperately you want to win this. Maybe if you call me a nazi again you'll be on track for that victory. Keep going, you're so close!

who here likes soldier even more now

Here. The fact that insecure breeders get pissed off to no end is just icing on the cake.

Not that guy but you're fixating on one throw away point and running with it to a different conversation. "Subversion of expectations" is an important aspect of drama, comedy, and writing and has been a thing pre-postmodern. Shrek may have started a ridiculous trend popularized by the fractured fairytales before it and works of deconstruction like Watchmen, but people seemed to get most upset with the concept when the new Star Wars came around.

You cannot seriously believe this.

I'm just upset that this reveal was done using some irrelevant guy whose divorced and has his own family at least Emily is in a relationship with Lena. It felt like some Dumbledore tier afterthought
>t. Fag

Based Rotor poster.

wtf... i cant believe the gays are shoving their sexuality down our throats like this... we get it, you're gay...

conspiracy theory: he was a forgettable nobody on purpose so no one would get attached to him. that way, blizzard can set up SoldierXReaper and people will accept it with open arms since its been foreshadowed slightly (reyes has a solo photo of jack in his room, jack never referring to reyes as a friend, etc.)

Lucio is a bisexual manwhore until told otherwise

this is in an ideal future where presumably the korean idol lifestyle isnt as fucked up

i was super down on the lucio dva train but then i saw dva is like 18 and lucio is 26 and i dunno man 8 years is pretty big at that young

I was born in the 80s and old enough to realize that all video games are marketing and having this conversation now is a sign that it's just marketing you don't like and you selectively amp up your cyncism. Straight white male soldier character who got no time for a gf is just as much marketing as gay white male soldier character who got no time for a be but for some strange reason people only openly express their distaste for one of these forms of marketing.

>It's just Shrek an Star Wars
You see Disney self-deprecating by making fun of their princesses all the time now. Frozen decided to "subvert expectations" by making true love come from a sister instead of a lover.

While it is a part of writing, it isn't a saving grace that excuses dull story telling and mismatched tone. People found it especially frustrating from Star Wars because the tone was a fucking mess and the story made very little sense on your way to the fridge. Heck, it didn't even make sense when the film started - why is the First Order on the rise again? They just lost a planet-killing weapon, surely that must have been expensive. How does that lead to a rise?

"Subversions of expectations" is just a cheap excuse for a bad piece of media. You expected a good film, but instead you got a really shitty film with a dumb twist in the end that made the whole movie pointless.

People thought that if anyone in Overwatch would be gay, it'd be Roadhog and Junkrat. Not because they're twinks, but because they're the only real pair. But they "subverted expectations" by making it be Soldier 76.

Now you say, "Ha ha! Subverted your expectations! This gay thing is a non story with both Tracer and 76, and it involves non characters who do nothing!"

This shit is just bad writing.

>Dull thing nobody cares about is just as good of marketing as a thing people will talk about
Well I know you'd get fucking fired from the department.

always depends on how its written

Attached: b24053cf0cc6c70cc34037cede72b8bc9385bd6c_00.jpg (412x231, 23K)

i personally wouldnt want roadhog and junkrat as a gay couple. pretty sure roadhog threatens to kill junkrat or is indifferent to his death in voicelines and that wouldnt really be a healthy couple depiction. id rather they stick to the dysfunctional buddies where roadhog is begrudgingly involved for the loot, as the lore suggests.

make hanzo the fag. have you seen how he dresses?

What argument? I alredy told you you're stupid and you're missing the point. What is there more to say? That you caught me in a retard loop? Haha you got me, I wasted some time talking to someone too stupid and insignificat to actually be able to have a discussion. Guilty!

Now I'll leave you with your delusion, like many people probably have told you before: you're boring. Beg attention from someone else. Try your parents.

More gays means more risk and less marketability overseas so yeah maybe.

AYO THIS NIGGAS GOT A 6 HEAD LMAO

How is it even forced? It's never mentioned at all except like briefly in the comics.
>We're all faggots now
>Get these jokers off my cock

>It'd be an unhealthy couple if two amusing bad guys talked shit on each other
Oh my fucking god. Yes, let's steer as far away as we can from any "unsafe" conflict. We sure as fuck wouldn't want some kind of complex love-hate thing that would be worth writing a story around.

>More gays means more risk and less marketability overseas so yeah maybe.
doesnt seem to be hurting league of legends or apex legends at all

>Still no argument and just 'no u'!

It's okay to admit it when you're wrong, user. Your entire argument was flawed from the beginning. Nobody will think any less of you for walking away now.

Thank you for proving me right. It was an absolute delight to get to see you squirm and writhe in frustration. Maybe next time come back with some better logic, yeah?

because it's time

id agree with you in the sense that its good to show all kinds of relationships, including unhealthy ones, but LGBT is so severely underrepresented its just not a good idea for blizzard to be one of the few to depict ones first and have it be presented as undesirable. in a decade or half decade that could work, but as of right now its hard enough to show that LGBT people can be happy (see bury your gays trope). this is especially a no no in a game about celebrating diverse beliefs/cultures/lifestyles

Probably because they don't kiss on screen and keep it to their character bios. It's the fabled "good representation" people suddenly hate.

but thats literally the exact situation for soldier, only its not even in his bio its in a hard to find side story.

Well, Apex at least started out with a gay character instead of suddenly labeling an old character. I don't know how it was done in LoL though.

>It's the fabled "good representation" people suddenly hat
Yeah, I remember just a year ago most everyone thought that actually having a gay character be gay in anything but text form was bad. I guess that changed?

I hear people complain about either strategy. Revealing theyre gay immediatley makes people go "thats the gay character", and revealing it later makes people go "thats a retcon". Theres gonna be people upset either way.

And for context of LoL, they made Varus gay in a music video (that one was a literal retcon tho, as LoL has many rewrites). Also their newest champion is lesbian, though some say thats because of the RIOT sexism issues. But I dont follow LoL closely enough to know how true that is.

I agree. But people are suspicious assholes who want to be above the marketing teams. If there were SJW clickbait articles disappointed with the handling of Soldier's sexuality, many of these same cynics would ironically be saying "THEY'RE NEVER SATISFIED".

>Soldier 76 is gay
>Not Junkrat and Roadhog
It would have been perfect.

Yea Forums is just retarded. they threw a fit that far cry 5 depicted white christian guys as villains, then threw a muh sjw fit when the sequel has black girls as villains. i wish people were at least consistent with what bothers them.

Don't really care if they're straight/gay/whatever, or how they act.
Just give me a good game.

If you guys WANT to play VGs with no gay or LGBTQ characters involve them just move to Russia. There Anti-LGBTQ game policy literally does not allow any game that has even one hint of certain character being gay or whatever. So you can just REEE off just play your favorite games in that country but I will tell you that you would be limited in options.

Just a little advice and knowledgeable I have about Russia's policies.

do russians know tracer and soldier are gay? do they hate it?

So nobody plays Overwatch in Russia?

I personally don't give a shit and think it's pretty forced in and of itself to care about 76's sexuality relative to the game itself, especially since OW has a really fucking dumb "lore" to begin with.

What more people need to give Blizzard shit for however is announcing characters are gay literally minutes after controversy. It's clearly done to pander to retards and ignore said controversy.

I couldn't care less about this garbage.
I don't play videogames to identify with the characters.
They could make every character gay.
They could make every character straight.
They could make every character a trans black lesbian.
Just let me have fun. Give me a goodgame, please.

Here is what you need to know about S76:

>Metzen wrote out his entire dynamic with Reaper back in the 90s and injected it into Overwatch
>both are men on the battlefield with past lives that are ripped away from them due to being experimented on by the government
>they start a romantic relationship, one dies, the other seeks revenge

>In Overwatch's interpretation, it's similar but with a PG13 rating
>instead of being in Vietnam: Los Angeles, both remember their past lives and chose to gave them up for the greater good
>Reaper has a kid from a past relationship
>S76 dumped his old boyfriend to become strike commander
>Reaper (Gabriel) and S76 (Jack) make a happy family while saying they can't
>something happens and the base explodes, now they turn into their edgy counterparts

This fills the niche left open by the community. S76 gets a snarky, adopted daughter and becomes a dad. Reaper gets his cute and domestic side everyone wants. And despite this being nothing but pandering It's not bad. It was hinted for 3 years and counting

user source faggot

I'm not "gay", but I would let Roadhog fuck me.

That said, I don't know why they made 76 gay and not the obvious pick of Roadhog

Virtue signalling.
I think it's unnecessary to include a character's sexuality, unless it plays into the game's story somehow.

>It wouldn't be a good idea if Blizzard used one of the FIRST EVER depictions of gay people as being unhealthy!

What are you, ten? Just because a bunch of schmucks on Youtube say every show that year is the first ever to depict a gay relationship doesn't mean it's true. Gay characters are depicted all the time. Sometimes it's serious, sometimes it's comedy. This started happening as far back as the nineties. It's been thirty years of gay characters appearing in media.

It's not a major PR disaster if a single gay couple in a video game weren't nice to each other. Especially if you establish the two as villains. Goddamn.

>literally minutes after controversy. It's clearly done to pander to retards and ignore said controversy.
What was the controversy and announcement timeline? Source?

That isn't what I mean by "affecting the game."

but it did play into soldier's story. blizz didnt post a patchnote saying "soldier is gay". it was part of a shortstory about ana and jack, and the fact that they abandoned their families/spouses to fight injustice and the emotional struggle that comes with it.

Most of the comics were trashed. One was left unpublished. The one that exists has S76 rip and tear teenagers to shreds in LA for working for the US. The one that details what he can remember about his old squad, the relationships he had (and he wanders around as a hobo looking like santa Claus) wasn't published because of the gay shit. Metzen gave up after that.

Attached: Soldier76_Preview001.jpg (338x500, 63K)

>and the fact that they abandoned their families/spouses
Would the story have made sense if the gender of his spouse was left untold?

I could easily see a bunch of articles published "blizzard misunderstands the gays" after doing so. Im not personally against the idea, but from a business standpoint its just not worth the risk IMO.

>Blizzard misunderstands the gays
Junkrat/Roadhog was the relationship people expected and wanted. Every character in Overwatch is so utterly harmless that you could use them to advertise toothpaste. Being just a little mean to each other is expected when the two are clown-tier badguys who blow themselves up with their own bombs.

I cant believe toby fox invented homosexuality

Attached: 645645768799866.png (500x388, 210K)

it would be a bit awkward, as he refers to the character by name and they have a couples photo from way back in 2016. but even so, there really is no harm in it. its just a fact that the person he loves happens to be a man. sure, it could have been a woman, but its a man. and ana happens to have loved a man. thats just how it turned out. blizzard never put it on a pedestal. it was presented as facts. it was the media that reacted loudly.

ok but wheres your fucking sauce. youre making up facts unless you have a citation that he intended to publish gay shit

>Virtue signalling.
Meaningless accusation applied to anything vaguely liberal.

fair enough. i guess the two are well liked enough that it could work out (timon and pumba style). i just see how blizzard could prefer soldier as he is much more clearly a "good guy" characters and they probably want hero gays.

then again, symmetra works for a villain and has autism, so they probably dont care afterall. you may be right

Everyone but Reaper. And S&M furry fetishist Roadhog. And homicidal maniac Junkrat.

Would it matter either way? It not mattering doesn't mean it would be better to leave it ambiguous. There are many other relationships alluded to in the series and this is the one where you stop and question if the gender of the significant others should be known?

>Everyone but Reaper
Of course it's always the goth kids who think they're too edgy to be targeted by corporations.

Hot Topic called. They said they're owned by the same company responsible for Abercrombie and Fitch and they got your number because you're one of the easiest demos to understand.

im convinced reaper is a double agent faking a rivalry with soldier in order to find out who destroyed overwatch and who is really controlling all these corrupt companies.

who am i kidding, blizzard isnt that complex.

I don't really think there is any point of making a gay character in an online game like OW. The main point of online games is the core game play, and making a character gay in a game like OW doesn't affect the game play in anyway and is only done to cause controversy and/or to pander to people. There is really now reason we need to know anyone sexuality in an online game. The most I want to know about the characters is their surface level personality like in TF2. I don't need to know everything about them.
But making a gay character in a more story driven, single player game can affect the story which is the main element of said single player game. And as long as said gay character isn't super in your face about it, and their main trait is being gay I am okay with them including gay characters.

And here I thought you'd characteize me as a pearl clutching soccer mom which would be closer to the truth in this case. If you play the game, he's the most out of place.

I dont care if a character is gay, I really dont. What I detest however is flicking a switch to make a character gay all of a sudden, that is fucking stupid and the fact that people eat it up means we are doomed going forward.
>people are ok with having characters just being assigned gay so gay people and idiots will applaud them, even though they literally did nothing
They are not making a gay character, they have simply said "this character is gay" years after they made the character. If thats all it takes to get those brownie points you can do this to literally any fucking character in media who does not have a family and kids shown in some kind of media, at any point the developers can say years later "the character is actually X", like in Harry Potter with Rowling saying "hermione was always portrayed as being black" even though it is a blatantly fucking lie and the characters inception and creation was in no way saying they were black. Noone was designing 76s backstory at hte begining and saying "hes a fallen hero who use to lead a team of operatives who fell from grace and went into hiding and became a vigillante working in the shadows, also hes gay".

Reaper? He's a sterile trope meant to reach out to kids who think black trench coats are cool. All of Overwatch is like this. Every character is just another example of "Hello Fellow Kids!" in a single product. Reaper fits right in when you look at it as the Burger King Kids Gang and not as something real.

Tbh if there are characters confirmed as hetero in their respective bios, confirming someone as gay/bi in the same way as well is the best approach. That way it doesn't come off as forced and people aren't crying about retcon.

Did she say there Hermoine was always black? I thought she said she didn't specify which was dishonest. I believe her about the Dumbledore thing though: How are you going to put a gay mentor figure to a little boy in a book written for children in the 90s?

Video games are a creative medium so developers can do whatever they want.
You can scream lazily written or unnecessary all you want, you might even be right, but at the end of the day you can always just play something else

Attached: marie think.png (1280x1279, 249K)

where is your proof

>make a character gay all of a sudden
What prevented 76 from being gay?
Alson don't pretend people wouldn't have cried because that one noew BR game did it and people were also crying about it here.

>making a character gay in a game like OW doesn't affect the game play in anyway and is only done to cause controversy and/or to pander to people.
This.

Who's crying about the Apex dude having a bf?

Salinger called, he said he wants his adolescent cyncism back.

pre-reaper Reyes is actually pretty chill. i want to marry him.

Attached: 600.png (714x598, 787K)

too much attention for such a small statistic

Dumbledore was hinted as being gay with his relationship with Grindelwald, and Rowling never said Hermione was actually black she said she could have been black because the Harry Potter play casted a black woman as Hermione.

Oh, I'm sorry. Did the amazing, cohesive story of a gorilla on the moon leading a battle against people who play on the same side as you somehow make Overwatch into something besides a crass commercial product?

Because all I see is a bunch of brightly colored toys of all races, genders, and sexualities trying to get me to buy their video game.

Since when do fags act like Soldier 76? Maybe bi guys but full blown fags? He was clearly written as an archetypal straight character and they turned him into a homo.

post a page of him being gay and ill believe you

Attached: And+more+_f7f41361152408c536b8ea840f757d47.jpg (1000x818, 160K)

Gays can act like anything, and I think that's the point. Hard Gay exists.

japan loves undertale, right? what did they think about this scene?

Gabriel is literally an angel. He's pulling the double agent routine and everything wrong he did he's doing it for the greater good. I don't see how people still think he's evil. Can't they read between the lines?

>Hard Gay
Is this the name of a gay hookup app?

fujo boner

If he "acted gay" you would have complained about homosexuality being shoved in your face

i believe this too but blizzard is also fucking retarded so i could see them not taking this obvious opportunity.

Is there a point to making straight characters? It's true, we don't NEED to know a thing about pacman, but the fact that he's married and has a wife who has her own game only adds to the enjoyment.

>And as long as said gay character isn't super in your face about it, and their main trait is being gay I am okay with them including gay characters.
What's funny is that many people can enjoy Shoreleave from Venture Bros even though he's the only character I can think of who actually fits this description.

ye

Homos are all sick in the head and the sad thing is we would rather pretend they're normal than help them.

For a second I thought you were talking a out Mario and Sonic games.

Isn't that the Japanese dude who's shtick was to pretend to be a super manly gay guy?

user, they've made it so blatantly obvious this is what they're doing. There is nothing deep or complex about it. Although his motivations for doing so are probably going to be produced down to "waah Jack love me" "muh kid" and whining about how he had to keep them away to protect them or some melodramatic bullshit like that.

>too new to know who Hard Gay is, but still weighing in on gay video game representation
nu/v/ needs to die

Well he could've just been, you know, heterosexual in the first place.

We don't need help though. We're living better lives away from women.

Attached: 567650122451.jpg (500x497, 67K)

Idk, been here for 7 years. When was the hard gay thing a meme?

Why does he need to be hetero?

>getting this triggered over video game marketing
Why are you even on Yea Forums? Go preach how only true art comes from systems devoid of captialism on /pol/.

the overwatch story is based on the whims of michael chu and i just dont have much faith in him as individual. we STILL havent had a comic explaining how the fuck mccree lost his arm, despite that apparently being a big potential emotional moment for reyes and the gang. even if thats supposed to happen, my grankids will be the ones to see it, not me.

Would've been more interesting storytelling. Soldier 76 having sex with Ana and being the father of Pharah. What could've been... now we just got some generic faggot.

>you aren't gay unless it's your identity
guess i'm not gay then boys

>generic faggot
>soldier too busy saving the world to play butt pirate
????

>all this hoop jumping just to avoid admitting you don't like gays

Attached: 1516418738104.gif (200x270, 1.09M)

if anything rein should be pharahs papi. soldier being ana's love interest is boring. we have enough "female combat partner becomes lover" plots in media.

reeeee why do they look like normal males, I thought gay face was a thing

>apparently being a big potential emotional moment for reyes and the gang
Fairly sure it wasn't. McCree had to have lost it after Reyes went missing, maybe even in the explosion that took the base down. There are many things we haven't seen but I think you might be exaggerating it.

I don't mind it even when it is forced. Just does not effect me in any way.

>Thoughts on “straight-acting” vs stereotypical gay behavior?

IMO this shouldn't be a thing. Who I want to have sex with has little effect on anything until I'm talking to someone I wanna have sex with.

"Stereotypical gay behavior" is just the "gamerz" of being a homosexual male. It's literally their only identity and they have to go overboard with it.

I don't know. I jerk to girls and trips, that probably makes me a little bi. So I can't hate myself. I just hate what they did to this character.

Why him? He has no relation to Ana whatsoever, Morrison does.

>Is there a point to making straight characters? It's true, we don't NEED to know a thing about pacman, but the fact that he's married and has a wife who has her own game only adds to the enjoyment.
Again. I don't care if someone is straight, gay, trans, ect when it comes to an game where the main attraction is the core game play like on an online game. While in pac-man they tried to add an lore to into which eventually spawned spin offs, and I never cared for that. All I want to know about a character at the most is their base personality. And most of the time someone being LGBT doesn't play into that.

>What's funny is that many people can enjoy Shoreleave from Venture Bros even though he's the only character I can think of who actually fits this description.
Never saw Venture Bros but looking at pictures and a quick short clip of him he looks like he was designed the poke fun at the overly stereotypical flamboyant gays. I have nothing wrong with that because it's more of a parody that anything. But if someone made a serious gay character like that I would be more annoyed by it than anything.

Gross pandering

To the people complaining about pandering, what makes this different from waifu weeb pandering games like Neptunia and Senran?

>Mario and Sonic use colorful characters to advertise! It's the same!

Nintendo has never announced that Donkey Kong has sex with dudes in order to drum up controversy and get people talking about their video games. Sure, they release some goofy statements about Luigi or Birdo on the occasion, but those are characters who they've decided are weird and they're just like that, all the time, permanently. When they said "Sorry Luigi, you can't wear the princess crown to become Peach", they did it partly as a joke, but they also did it because people were talking about it too much.

Could they have ridden the wave and started saying, "Durr, yeah, Bowser wants to be a sexy girl"? Sure, but instead they released a statement saying, "No, no, it doesn't work like that". Their empire is built on Mario and Bowser. Mario can't just suddenly turn gay to get people to buy his most recently released game just this one time. Everything has to be relatively consistent with them so that consumers know who Mario is.

ana and rein have an established close relationship. we know this from voicelines. or i could be fucking making up shit cuz its been so long. but i do know theres a spray of rein taking pharah ice fishing, and that seems like a very fatherly thing to do.

The difference is nobody plays those god awful games and people actually play Overwatch and care about the lore of it.

Pretty sure it's related to this character.

Attached: hardgay1.png (500x335, 276K)

Sure thing, kid.

Attached: 1550944680885.jpg (960x764, 102K)

Because those are games made to pander to certain people. Only the people they pander to are going to buy it. Also that's pandering they want to see so of course they are going to be more okay with it.

Ambiguous sexuality gets you shitstorms like all the arguments about Ike’s sexuality. There really isn’t any way to win.

It sounds like you're saying Nintendo doesn't have the balls to be anything but safe and marketable. Literally Hot Topic. Fucking phonies.

What's a Hard Gay then?

Being gay isn't "forced," that's just a meme straight white guys came up with when they realized two men are allowed to kiss now.

I could care less if shooty man is gay. I mean he's not really gay, because he never does anything gay in the game. He's only canonically gay for SJW virtue signalling purposes, making it vaguely distasteful.

Birdo is a trans character, we have no idea what Luigi is really into, and the games have had a few sexual innuendos.

Yes, it's a safe brand, but it's also a consistent brand. It's bright characters trying to sell you a product, but Nintendo means to sell you Mario for a hundred years.

You know how many Overwatch games there's gonna be?

One.

And that's why 76 is gay. Because Blizzard is not planning to sell you Overwatch for a century. It's going to sell Overwatch for as long as people will buy it, and then it'll sell you mobile garbage or, hell, maybe buy someone else's IP and fuck it into the ground once people lose all taste for what they already own.

Or maybe they'll just sell off all their assets and cash out for the investors. Most likely scenario.

Do you want him sucking dicks in the game?

nothing really wrong with a character who is gay.

plenty wrong with a gay character.

a gay character has being gay as a defining personality trait, and someone who's personality is defined by their sexuality is always an annoying motherfucker regardless of what that sexuality is.

just make a fucking character then decide whether or not they're gay.

in that way I'd have nothing wrong with 76 as a homo if it weren't for the fact that it honestly seems like they made him one retroactively.

also character sexuality only actually matters in story driven games where their sexuality can have consequences, its irrelevant in a moba or a hero shooter and should be left ambiguous unless it will actually add something to the character.

Attached: Makes You Think.png (141x411, 21K)

He said it in an interview back in 2006.

ok link the interview

Honestly, given Genji's previous lifestyle was highly hedonistic and now is spiritually enriched and studies under someone whos motto is "true self is without form" I'm amazed they haven't declared Genji pansexual.

that said, it is tricky.

There's letting a character's character sink in first then revealing them to be gay which can feel like the writers threw it in to make themselves seem more progressive.

Or as mentioned above, going off the bat with things might make people just brand the character as "the gay dude"

Admittedly though, one of my favorite gay characters in Video Games is probably Sand "Moose" Jensen from The Secret World, an NPC quest-giver in the starting area.

youtu.be/tevIkfU4s_c?t=265

of course, perhaps what helps is that Moose does something a lot of good videogame characters do and "bribes the player" by giving cool temporary skills and such that prove wonderfully effective and make you like him.

Attached: 1469597485454.png (1000x1000, 423K)

pansexual is just a meme for bi

literal fake news if you cant post a credible source

I agree with that, but in overwatch's setting with robots of ambiguous and possibly lacking a sense of gender identity (besides maybe a willingness to try sex), I wouldn't put it past genji to clanked with ominics even before he was a cyborg.

So Mario and Overwatch are products of marketing but somehow it's only bad when Overwatch does it?

It doesn’t matter. As long as they don’t it the characters defining trait, unless it’s played as a joke

Pansexual means that gender is not part of what you find attractive while bisexuality means that you find all genders attractive and might have leanings towards one.

So sexuality is based on fetishes now and not gender?

>Pansexual means that gender is not part of what you find attractive
you mean like a normal human being who is bi?
>bisexuality means that you find both genders attractive and might have leanings towards one
how is either of those mutually exclusive? you could be bi, not be attracted because of the gender, and not lean towards a specific. this sounds like an unnecessary term.

It's bad when a company does something socially controversial to make money and then says, "We did it for the best interest of the people we're making money on," particularly if the controversial thing they did had no artistic merit.

Do you think saying 76 is gay to sell a few more copies of Overwatch is really advancing the lives of gay people? You think this is really good for society to be so utterly, nihilistically commercial that nothing is sacred and anything can be a tool to sell a product? You think it's good to think so short term about things and not care at all if your media lasts beyond 2019 because you know your investors will ask you to cash out and fold?

Because all you love would perish from people thinking like this. Look at Sonic and all the good his revamps and exciting new characters did for him. You can sell shit in the here and now, but anything made like this has the lifespan of a goldfish.

Overwatch is a universe where you can literally fuck robots but we're supposed to act Soldier being gay is a surprising thing? At least they tried with Tracer's reveal with a decent Christmas comic

>Do you think saying 76 is gay to sell a few more copies of Overwatch is really advancing the lives of gay people?

it helps normalize it to the younger folk, making gay people less ostracized in the following generation. at least, thats the idea when a lot of games do it.

lol stfu. Pan exists as a statement of all inclusiveness as a contrast to "bi" being a statement of two. Its an inherent acknowledgement of "3+ gender" shit, no rationalization changes that

Actual faggot here, and as such i love playing as homo erotic gay characters, such as Taric or Vega last one isn't gay but you know, very feminine.
ANYWAYS, soldier 76 is absolute shit pandering i would be more than happy if they added a gay/feminine guy character, but nope, they just took an established character and shit on the fanbase and anyone that cared, that's the problem not him being gay, but THEM turning him gay for attetion because the game is dying and theyre just giving it a faster death with shit like this.

Attached: SADDOGE.jpg (1125x1117, 195K)

You're half right: Bisexuality recognizes a binary and implies attraction to cis males and cis females.

i take people who describe themselves as pansexual as a warning sign to stay away from them.

>Saying a character is gay and standing back as the shit hitting the fan helps normalize homosexuality
Perhaps you might think that if you hold a degree in some sort of baseless social science, but I think if people hadn't been telling you that these past few years, you'd find it somewhat counter-intuitive.

Attached: Demo.jpg (268x268, 25K)

I support their gay relationship, you should too.

like one fucking day after the scandal comes out.

shit only hits the fan on Yea Forums and some subreddits for a short period. meanwhile, the kids still enjoy the fortnite, apex, and all that shit despite there being a bunch of women and black characters. if you make a game fun and have diversity, kids familiarize themselves with the differences, and become more welcoming/tolerant. so having gay characters in your childhood game, you become less likely to see a homosexual as an alien entity as an adult and are less likely to be prejudice. it takes a lot of effort to normalize tho, as homosexuality is a lot harder to communicate than black people or women. but kids shows like steven universe handle it well IMO

too bad overwatch isnt a good game, otherwise it would be a good representation.

Oh, hi Reaper76 user

The problem is you're selectively calling out a company as doing something just to make money when any content is already understood to be for that purpose.

And if you really think about it, an LGBT soldier a few years after Don't Ask Don't Tell gets removed and we're in a debate of whether or not trans soldiers should be banned from the military can be seen as an "important" character. I'm not going to fall for it. I'm going to pretend to be too smart and too cynical to even appreciate this sort of thing so you don't think I'm just some SJW faggot, but I'm sure it means something to someone.

this shit was perfectly fine desu

shut the fuck up you retarded little waste of life.

As a gay man, I don't care. They are fictional characters, who gives a fuck if you can relate to them?

>Bayonetta
>Doesn't know Bayonetta was designed by a lady

user DONT BAIL ON ME YOU FUCK

Nice opinion. On one hand in glad games like Bayonetta can exist as they're a sign that we don't live in a feminist hell hole, but on the other it panders too hard.

>with the guidance of a man
The designs she made for him weren't all sexy and he passed over more "dignified" or dressed up versions for the sexier outfit. You can see it in the documentary.

Oh, I'm sure that EMOTIONALLY Soldier 76 must mean something to a number of people for a number of reasons. But societally?

Fucking nothing but sales figures. Tell me, user, if I told you that you had to make a show to "normalize" black people, what is a Black People? Think about how in Black Panther, a Black People never evolved beyond a tribal aesthetic and there was graffiti all over the walls like this shit is just normal every day decorations when you're a Black People. People praised Black Panther for helping to normalize Black People, but it relied on tons of blatant stereotypes and fictional super men with goofy fake accents.

It'll tell you what a Black People is: it's a demo. It's just numbers. It's stats data. It's a thing, not a person.

If you want to "normalize" black people, then I'd focus more on local politics and get to understand how funding for local schools is being allocated, along with job availability, and the general concept of social mobility. Because the reason you might not see as many black kids in a nice neighborhood is because it's tough to get out of bad areas and your zip code says a lot about where you'll wind up as an adult.

You don't "normalize" anything by throwing it into a video game stir-fry like Overwatch. Your "normalize" it by having it. If it were easier to get ahead in America you'd have more homogeneity and you wouldn't have to be whining at the media to "normalize" anything. Everywhere you go there'd be people like that, and they wouldn't be statistical data points or stereotypes, they'd be actual people with actual personalities.

Now she can be his fag hag

>On one hand in glad games like Bayonetta can exist as they're a sign that we don't live in a feminist hell hole
Feminists love Bayonetta though.

You're changing the subject and discounting any attempt at creating change because to you that's only permissable when it's in the voting booth and never in the realm of public discourse, the place where people form the opinions they take to the voting booth.

>Tell me, user, if I told you that you had to make a show to "normalize" black people, what is a Black People?
I don't understand the question.

>It'll tell you what a Black People is: it's a demo. It's just numbers. It's stats data. It's a thing, not a person.
You're trying to talk about marketable demographics as if they're not made of people?

I mean sex negative feminists.

what are the behavioral differences outside of sexual intercourse between heterosexuals and homosexuals?
(Hint: if you say anything at all you are a fucking bigot)

>Its not gay to be gay

Attached: ...How.png (797x596, 519K)

>nobody still has explained to me what Hard Gay is
Come on, homos, help an user out.

Alright, you're telling me you want to change public discourse about homosexuals and black people, right? And your plan is to do this through TV and video games. This is such a simple proposal that any idiot can get behind, and indeed many idiots do.

But what does it MEAN to be black? To be gay? To be Asian? It's an individual experience, actually, isn't it? And you can't really "normalize" blackness or gayness by depicting it in media or by making it cool. What you get instead is black imitating what they see on BET, regardless of where they grew up, because that's what they think "blackness" is.

But if a person's skin or sexuality is some byline you forget about, the retarded person thinks he's not driving home the message. How do we know Wakanda is black unless there's fucking graffiti everywhere?

You get me? You aren't "normalizing" blackness, you're depicting a broad caricature of it. Same for "gayness". Sure, some people may adopt your caricature and try to be more like it because they think its cool and could be part of their identity, but did you really get more black kids into college?

I'm a personal believer that one of the real thing that's "normalized" homosexuality is better medicine, changes in how marriage and land ownership work, and better contraceptives. Society and technology has permitted people to be openly gay by making it safe, and by replacing legal institutions that demanded child-rearing.

Similarly, "Blackness" can be normalized by reducing barriers into society. Available education, affordable healthcare, and good public transit could help people on the bottom get to the top. It's what matters, and as long as that all happens, you'll have black people doing well for themselves regardless.

Extremely negative stereotypes are a problem, and we shouldn't spread those, but you can't just "normalize" things without having a societal infrastructure that properly allows them to thrive and exist.

The media shit is an illusion.

Trying to find a better episode, but this is Hard Gay.

youtu.be/6vpP7kF8zT8

I really do not give a shit

I stopped playing desu. I don’t get why I need to know about a cartoon video game soldiers sex life.

Oh wait, nu-blizzard thinks lgbt characters makes the game good

unless relationships are explicitly part of the games storyline i don't see how a characters sexuality is relevant to anything

just dont say anything about it and let the players decide on their own

Attached: D0Npvy2VAAEI_3e.jpg (1200x1920, 315K)

>Sure, some people may adopt your caricature and try to be more like it because they think its cool and could be part of their identity, but did you really get more black kids into college?
Yes, when the message is "blacks are fucked over and oppressed and need help" and the movie ends with an urban youth outreach center being built. At the very least it may inspire people to invest in programs like that. Wealthy people already do.

Now the funny thing is this is all irrelevant because the video game is part of the public discourse and the deeper meaning can be sorted out by those who partake in the discourse. Black Panther and Overwatch don't need to be a deep and meaningful thesis on the black and gay experience to have any impact or value. Yes, there are better ways of doing it, but that doesn't discount what they have done.

>Extremely negative stereotypes are a problem, and we shouldn't spread those, but you can't just "normalize" things without having a societal infrastructure that properly allows them to thrive and exist.
This representation helps to fight extremely negative stereotypes and a lot of people don't see the need to help create societal infrastructure that properly allows people to thrive or exist without the public discourse before hand. You know the joke "How do you know if someone is a vegan? Don't worry, they'll tell you"? Well if they didn't tell anyone and their work orders pepperoni pizza, I bet they wish they had said something sooner.

Pretty much.

>halo 3
Wat
Explain this to me

not that relevant unless you watched a lot of anime between 2007-2010 where it would frequently get referenced

its almost like people slowly got sick of badly written political trash over time until the pot finally boiled over
or something

yeah thats bullshit. only people who cared about this was traditional evangelical conservative old people. now that theres minorities, women, and LGBT in the games the actual young male demographic is triggered

It's funny how the straw that breaks the camel's back in gamer political awakening is once again a woman.

Yea Forumsmrade here. Shoreleave is a highly skilled agent that goes on high risk missions. He was first introduced as a repented gay character who found Christ along with his also Christain partner who is also a repented homosexual. That was all just a cover for them actually being part of some high secret agency. He acts just like the flamboyant gay character that his design and poses suggest. It's not the greatest to me at all, but he's not given too much attention

It's been a fun ride witnessing the cognitive dissonance.

Attached: 1548645197619.png (900x667, 793K)

The people complaining about gay characters already have preconceived biases against gay people. The idea is that it would help normalize homosexuality so that people don’t continue to form those same biases.

its whatever when its just a character who happens to be a fag is there like emil and kaine in neir, but obnoxious when the character's entire identity is literally just "420 smoke dicks everyday" like in literally every western game ever

the GAMERS RISE UP meme is the best thing to come out of it.

>That image
fuck off to your containment board, retard

I contend that the effort to fight negative stereotypes in that fashion is counterproductive. You end up with positive woke representation that is as relatable as a chick tract. Remember, it's not just including positive messaging. It's denouncing other messaging as counter revolutionary.

It's fine to have cosby AND gangster rap music.

the only people who get wildly upset over this are straight white college kids who desperately want to be woke

Attached: goro everything is fucked.jpg (1280x720, 101K)

Or even more ironically, it was a man white knighting for a woman.
>Don't like it? Don't buy it.

this is the containment board,retard

>that underweight or fat white guy with glasses and a comp sci degree who only plays strategy games or JRPGs

Bayonetta being overly sexualized actually fits the angel/demon theme. A good Christian woman was expected to be modest and prudish, so who better to represent demons than an overly sexualized woman? Additionally, the torture devices she uses in her torture attacks practically amount to BDSM.

It sounds like your problem is your own cynicism. As a "straight acting" gay guy, I find Soldier relatable, even though that's not completely necessary to enjoy the game or have any political value.

>Remember, it's not just including positive messaging. It's denouncing other messaging as counter revolutionary.
I'm not sure why that's necessary or what it means exactly.

>It's fine to have cosby AND gangster rap music.
I agree and don't know why you're stating this at all. Did I imply something to the contrary?

I myself am bisexual and I don't really care about the sexuality of videogame characters, unless it's part of the overall story and it's truly normalized instead of unsubstantiated gay characters and stereotypes. When Overwatch just drops that Soldier is gay, it feels like they're just throwing out some obscure information that doesn't really go anywhere.

Gay characters are under fire because in a lot of cases it's just shit writing like Dumbledore being gay yet not having the actual balls to do anything with it. In this climate gay characters should be normal, their homosexuality should be no deal, and if revealed it should actually be important to the character and plot so it doesn't feel shoehorned in.

Attached: Ur_gay.jpg (472x784, 126K)

You're missing the point and shielding yourself in the retard sociology bullshit.

The reason why most people get stuck on representation in media instead of anything serious is because it's easy to have an opinion about Star Wars. It's very difficult to understand the tax code or how macroeconomics plays a role in an entire racial demographic's inclusion in society. Worse, even if you understand those things, you're fighting an uphill battle against entrenched lobbies that make tons of cash in the current paradigm.

Want to help poor families afford insulin? Get fucked. Take your price gouge and like it. Nobody's going to help. At least nobody official. And it doesn't matter how many black people or women get into office because the problem has to do with the current design of government and how money plays into everything. The skin and gender isn't going to change the greater evils into something else.

How does representation change anything, television and newspapers have very little proven effect on populations unless the political arguments are very normal and acceptable, so if homosexuality or foreigners are not accepted then representation won't change that, and if it is then representation isn't important.

Having gay or minority characters is a way to improve other things, not their acceptance, so the political bullshit is dumb and tacky, use then as a way to for example make parts of America look realistic or add homosexuals as a sort of gay-only planet in the galaxy for interesting cultural clashing.

But no we get this endless virtue signalling that pretty much everyone already agrees on and the people that really don't will only disagree even more when you do this.

Attached: becca_face_unimpressed1.jpg (539x558, 90K)

Soldier's reveal was to show that he has no work/life balance and keep a significant other.

>shit writing like Dumbledore being gay yet not having the actual balls to do anything with it. In this climate gay characters should be normal, their homosexuality should be no deal
The first book was published in 97 and Dumbledore was the father figure to a boy in a kid's book. Hell no they weren't going to explore his sexuality.

>and if revealed it should actually be important to the character and plot so it doesn't feel shoehorned in.
It makes it easier to understand why one of the most powerful wizards never married and is childless. I remember thinking it was just oddly convenient his extended family isn't stealing the show from Harry.

For starters, it was done in the most fanfiction way that people will probably ignore the fact they made him gay.

You're pretty much saying what Black Panther is saying but reaching a smaller audience. Kudos for being more direct and specific than them and accomplishing that in a shorter time and with less effort. Good luck with getting your message out there.

Representation doesn't really do anything. It just makes foreigners/ minorities feel like they're more accepted. Also, you can include minority characters for reasons other than the plot/ setting. And in terms of the setting, it can even make more sense. about 4% of Americans identify as some kind of LGBT. Sense they exist, it's not really wrong for them to be in fiction.

A lot of people tend to make these arguments for why minorities shouldn't be in fiction as much (although I'm not saying you are), but the reason they almost never appeared is just due to simple market appeal, now the market wants something else. If done correctly, your virtue signaling can turn into a free, 24/7 advertisement because people complain about it on social media. Even better if the representation doesn't affect the final product that much.

I was aiming at the new Harry Potter, JK Rowling was at the wheel for the new film and book series with a young Dumbledore, and it's casually mentioned that Dumbledore really liked Voldermort in a way that can be construed as homosexuality but also as a really deep friendship. It's piss poor writing and definitely comes off as virtue signaling when loving a man like Voldermort as a male could have been really interesting.

Attached: image_0.jpg (125x125, 10K)

I'm all for more hot lesbians in video games.

>oh shit everyone hates us because we made diablo a mobile game
>lets just make another overwatch character gay despite not even slightly hinting at it previously

>Soldier's reveal was to show that he has no work/life balance and keep a significant other.
soldiers reveal was a smokescreen to cover up recent blizzard in house controversies and dropping player numbers

>You're saying what Black Panther is saying
Black Panther is saying that a magical, fictional nation of rich black people should swoop in from nowhere and build schools in the ghetto. Yes, I understand that's the most literal possible example, but my point is that Black Panther's message may as well be that we should click our heels together and wish on a fairy to help achieve social mobility.

They did hint at it previously with the picture of Soldier looking at his ex bf though. It wasn't the first time we saw that picture.

I never said it's wrong for them to be in fiction and even gave an example of an interesting way to include them, but I find the idea of representation as important outside of the media itself misguided and damaging to the actual media that has to undergo that stuff.

I wouldn't say minority roles should be lessened i any kind of fiction, just not for idpol and other misguided activism. Hire actors based on their ability to perform and emulate existing characters or based on their acting abilities, not to have more minorities and feel good about that.

Plus he is still a nigger so there is that, no way even in an ideal future would a korean date a nigger.

Yes click your heels and get out and help with social programs and urban youth outreach programs as they give a speech about helping those less advantaged. I'm sorry it's a marvel movie and not a TED talk complete with powerpoint presentation.

They don't need to do anything beyond flat out say that they were closer than brothers and won't fight each other, especially given that the time period it takes place is more conservative. Wizards didn't even allow race mixing. It's also not about Dumbledore so there's no need to go into detail with his love life.

a person can have friends of the same sex you know?

Attached: ugay.png (652x1333, 1.48M)

To me it felt like when push came to shove, Rowling backed out. Dumbledore was pretty much confessing that he was so in line with Voldermort he helped him become what he is today and even joined the same cause. Yet when he.confesses, even when it's canon Dumbledore has always loved Voldermort until the day he died, the movie flattens it out to being a really deep friendship and similar gripes about the wizarding world.

It cod have been the perfect time to substantiate the character and add a tragic twist to make Harry Potter as a franchise feel a lot less black and white, which has been a recurring criticism of Harry Potter.

>dva lolifag using meaningless subjective words like "forced" because her daddy 76 meme was shoved up her ass

Attached: 037CAB37-CC07-47D9-B5CE-BAC3ADC2E854.gif (305x205, 435K)

It's funny because there was no problem with seeing the embrace as romantic when it was thought that they were male and female. They could have been family or even friends, but now people whip out the greentext now that clickbait says "could have been".

Arcade Gannon.

The argument is about whether or not that kind of asinine "representation" actually helps anyone. Because clearly the answer can't be that Bill Gates should personally go around building outreach centers everywhere just because he has a moral responsibility.

He loves Grindelwald, not Voldemort. Voldemort is lack their gay adopted step grandson. I should have corrected you sooner.

And the subject changes yet again, coming full circle.

>Extremely negative stereotypes are a problem

>This representation helps to fight extremely negative stereotypes

In my mind, 76 isn't even a gay. Dude doesn't even have a sexuality, like every other fucking character. Why? Because the comics are in no way intertwined with the actual game, they're so far detached from each other yet act like the comics are the backbone of this entirely story-less PvP game. What a bunch of hogwash.

The subject never changed. Black Panther depicted a "super advanced" society of black people who still used spears, had graffiti everywhere, and chose their leader in trial by combat.

That's a positive stereotype that combats negative ones? One stereotype does it dispel, exactly? I would argue that if you want to cut away at positive stereotypes, you'd want shows like Fresh Prince, which shows the family struggles of a well-to-do but honest judge. Or the Cosby Show, which is why the sex scandal was so sad. It shows black people in ordinary family life like most people hope to be, not as spear-chucking mud people who get a new leader when the old is stabbed to death.

Even if you were fighting stereotypes, there's much better ways to do it, and it's not what most media is setting out to do. And the point was and continues to be that for real change, you need reality to support social mobility. The media cannot magically force jobs and education to be available to the lower class.

Because what is the difference between Black Panther and a fantasy, user? There is none. Wakanda is fake. It can never exist.

This level of denial is unreal. It sounds like the only way to convince you is to have the game shove it down your throat.

white guys are like the least homophobic guys so your comment makes no sense

I'm not fucking around, that would be much more palatable for me. Go all in, give him in-game lines about how he wish he were pushing his balls into his boyfriend's ass rather than pushing a cart. To be that upfront and in your face about it is the absolute least safe way to go about it, and it's the most respectable for that fact alone. As it stands now, it's just pussyfooting bullshit that means absolutely nothing, because the game isn't story driven in the slightest.

You're being obtuse about this whole thing and will find a new way to say how this or that isn't good enough or how it's not about representation, it's about real change, and it's not about encouraging social outreach programs, it's a out representation. You're right, there is better representation to be found elsewhere and real action is needed. I never disagreed with these statements.

they obviously didn't concieve of 76 being gay when they invented the character, they added it in later for diversity points. that's forced. tracer was probably written to be a dyke because she seems like a dyke, soldier isn't fucking gay, ive never met a gay person in my life that acted like soldier. also queers are overrepresented in ow.

This. Black guys think pegging is gay, let alone actual homos.

>they obviously didn't concieve of 76 being gay when they invented the character
...? already lost me
Did they "concieve" him being straight?

>pegging
quite the gateway tho

Recursively outing characters when your game starts getting less focus is a shit approach. but I'm not triggered enough to care if my virtual character sucks virtual dicks

Not him, but I'm pretty positive what he means to say is that they conceived him as a character based around a certain moral compass, like a superhero essentially. Nowhere within the mold of what the character was being shaped to represent did they have any want to say "Oh yeah and he's totally gay.", and I agree with him, there;s just no fucking way that was a thing. Especially with 76, who was a character made back in the 90s by Metzen as a for-fun daydream character that he liked to draw and think about. Him being gay is 100% tacked on for controversy and progressive points for the publicity.

You seething incels are hilarious

yes obviously you dumb queer. only 2-3% of the population is gay.

>anyone that diasgrees with me is an incel

nice i can tell you're really intelligent
