Dragon Quest 9 has a lot of gear that's mostly for fashion. Using certain gear will raise your charm stats, and clothes that go well together get an additional charm bonus. In battle, a calculation is made every turn based on your charm stat that can make enemies randomly lose a turn because they are mesmerized by your good looks.

Your kevlar may protect you from bullet but it's easily cut.
Your plate armor may protect you from sword and the like but it also conduct electricity/cold/heat very well to the point you're better off wearing nothing than a metal armor.
And so on, in a world where magic exist, you either wear magical armor which don't run on common sense or you wear ultra advanced armor that you would find in scifi which is not "realistic" either since they don't exist.
Also you don't need anime to find unrealistic armor, Conan is western and he fight naked.
