The Simpsons game had some good ideas, but the overall product was really disappointing.
A new open world game a-la-Hit&Run could happen, but I don't see how they would reuse the lots of references to the series again, unless they focus on the new seasons. But nobody really wants that, right?

I reckon Obsidian if they pulled their finger out could do an open-world Simps game pretty well, considering what they managed with South Park
