Put King Boo in the base roster, add King Bob-Omb and Kamek, remove Waluigi, Daisy and Dry Bowser or make them the DLC instead. Remove Geno and Ashley. Elder Princess Shroob would be better off as a boss with the Shroobs as a whole enemy faction.

Remove Rool, move Waluigi to DLC, remove Ashley from DLC, add Captain Toad, add Toadette (Treasure Tracker) to DLC, add Mallow to DLC.

Mario isn't traditionally a weapon-based series, unlike Zelda and Fire Emblem. It's a series about platforming.
Obviously you can make characters fit the Warriors style of gameplay. You can have Bowser and Jr. using swipes and fire attacks, along with mecha stuff. Rosalina can do space magic and use Lumas. Luigi with the Poltergust. Characters can use Karts and tennis rackets, etc.
But would you forsake the main mechanic of the series, jumping? Or should that only come up in special attack animations, with no dedicated jump button? You can give Mario his classic hammer as a weapon, but it'd be weird if jumping was shafted.
Then again, Hyrule Warriors brought a ton of Zelda mechanics that were never in previous Warriors titles, so maybe they can make it work.

It could be good if they make sure to have a varied roster like Hyrule and not like Fire Emblem.

If not, they could be "summoner" units that need to be dealt with by using the bow item like in hyrule warriors.
If left alone, they can drop a spiny or something.

Unironically a good idea for the roster variety. KT did a good job picking Zelda characters for HW.

Every single one of those games fucking sucks besides those that change the formula so much that it's unrecognisable like that SnK game (which then got a sequel that sucks again because it did nothing new, just like EVERY FUCKING MUSOU GAME).

Zelda couldn't save it. Berserk couldn't save it. You can't redeem a series with gameplay that consists of holding forwards and tapping the attack button where you don't even really need to look at the screen except to walk towards the next waypoint/whatever.

Double Cherry for Toad/Toadette so as the battle goes on you'll have a larger and larger swarm of Toads marching on through.
Carrot and Garlic for Wario, giving him the bunny transformation and the Wario Man transformations.
Yoshi gets the Puffing birds from the games that he can throw and that come back to him. Also Poochy functioning as a ball and chain with Yoshi's tongue being the chain.

If you hit Spiny Eggs before they unfurl into Spinys then the eggs go flying and home in on aerial foes.

Bowser got his hands on a magic artefact that just keeps spitting out infinite minions. For the first time ever, he has an actual army that even the mario bros can't handle on their own, luckily they get help from old friends (read: Characters from older mario games including rpgs). The artefact turns out to not be magic in origin, but alien, and Princess Schroob is coming to recollect her clone-o-matic and maybe try another shot at conquering the Mushroom Kingdom while she's there anyway.
