Any download links for this? Not paying $20 for some bad indie shit
IGG probably has it, but it looks awful
Parodius is kino, easily one of my favorite shoot em up series.
Zero
Ranger
Pictured will always be a favorite of mine. Even if it's easy, and no one else really mentions it... as a kid renting this from blockbuster, it felt pretty great to play and beat in one go.
>but it looks awful
how so?
Post ONLY the best of the best in this thread
It's okay user. I'm fond of it too. It's the first shump I played.
I can't seem to get a shmup to really stick with me.
DDP Daifukkatsu was pretty cool, but I have an issue with not being able to see what the fuck is going on.
DDPBL is considered a classic but I can't into the chaining system.
Dangun Feveron was fucking awesome and probably the one I want to 1cc.
I go up and down on liking Ikaruga, still not sure about it
It just looks incredibly generic and has the same dumb pixelly style tons of these indie games have. It's why I really like Hellsinker, because it's unique
WHO /CRIMZON CLOVER/ HERE?
This. Play Zero Ranger. Its good
Despair is slapping the Enlightenment out of me, Send Help
So is Zero Ranger a good buy if you're trash at the genre? I want to support it.
I bought Sky Force Anniversary on Xbone for $2 the other day
Terrific value imo, the game looks/plays great
Any good horizontal shmups on Switch that work well undocked?
Haven't played this, looks wild
Is it different to Crimson Clover World Ignition?
It's not the easiest but it is beginner friendly and generous with lives and continues.
Thanks user.
Oh, Space Megaforce on SNES is also good.
Unironically Thunder Force IV
I thought this was just game pass filler.
Far as I know Sine Mora is the only shmup on switch until Ikaruga comes out
unique =/= good
Gaiares, Arrowflash and Hellfire are the only boxed genesis games I still own
Sine Mora Ex?
R-Type Dimensions
Not but Hellsinker is fucking awesome
>until Ikaruga comes out
That's been out a while my dude.
I thought that wasnt out yet? I mean obviously the 2009 version is out but not on Switch.
This is a weird request, but does anyone know of any shmup/bullet hell games where you have momentum? Everything I've played allows you to stop and change direction instantaneously (for obvious reasons) but I've always thought it would be interesting if you slid around a little
why?
>Hellsinker
hideous weebshit
> WHO /CRIMZON CLOVER/ HERE?
> Posts Danmaku Unlimited
What did he mean by this?
Good game by the way. I've been training on DU3 for a bit, and I'm having a good time.
Very unique combat system, completely different styles of play, an actual world and story, banging OST.
I can't think of any, but Guwange has you go along the ground, so if there's a staircase or something you can't pass it.
Tyrian
It came out months ago.
>DU3
Speaking of that, am I crazy or do the bullets in that game look really simmilar to ones in Hellsinker?
Crimzon Clover is the everything I wanted out of a shmup. Is there any game out there that matches the intensity, quality, and OST?
>Very unique combat system
explain
Why is Yea Forums pushing Crimzon Clover so hard? It's literally the only fucking place I hear about this OK game
ZeroRanger.
3 different characters with vastly different styles. The one I play has a doll you send out to certain spots to fight enemies, all the while you have to make sure your different gauges are optimal, that you're sealing enemies correctly, all that kind of stuff. There's a lot to go into and I barely understand it all
The Danmaku Unlimited games use vector-like graphics, so comparisons to Hellsinker's look is natural. Some folks seem put off by, preferring Cave's look or it not looking pixelated, but I think it'd pulled off really well.
Perhaps people here just like it. No problem with that: It's nice to see differences among communities rather than everybody talking and acting the same way and liking only the approved games.
Ah that would explain things, even so I could swear some of the purple bullets are the exact same. I agree on it looking pretty cool, game looks nice and I really like the look of the ship.
I know that feel bro.
Fuck Corrosion is so damn good.
guys, looking for recommendations for shmups like Tyrian
not a fan of bullet hells, and I'd like something that focuses more on equipment loadouts rather than skill. something with a plot and some humor would be nice too.
back up your fucking saves before you beat despair for the love of god
ZeroRanger and literally any DoDonPachi game.
Also Monolith, but Monolith is closer to "The Binding of Isaac as made by CAVE" than a traditional STG.
Has anyone got that icycalm article about arcade culture?
Drifting Lands is quite okay. It's described as a diablo-esque shmup so expect a lot of grinding.
I know already. I know. She still kicks my ass and I Give up if I only have like 3 continues
I like the gameplay clips a lot, but holy shit, I don't understand how human hands/brains are supposed to comprehend anything in this game. I need to eat a continue to get past the first fucking stage
>tfw absolutely loathe every Shmup that isn't made by Konami
Anyone else feel this way?
Most Konami shmups are fucking awful, though.
Like, Gradius is fun on paper, but every single Gradius game is plagued by horrible shit like the Rank system.
What's wrong with shit going balls to the wall if you're good?
>dynamic difficulty
>ever a good thing
Absolute retard detected.
The only time difficulty settings should change in a single run of a Shmup is for things like Loops.
Just set the difficulty to 9 then. Idiot.
Best $8 spent on my Switch yet
Besides 194X are there other good WWII shmups?
shmup a lump a dumpa rump
You realize you guys sound like idiots with these terms right?
Strikers
Are you retarded?
It's an old-school trial and error shmup. Some patterns are absolutely ridiculous on your first try and you can't react fast enough. Could have benefitted from a little bit more tweaking imo
When is best girl getting her second game ported to Steam?
Don't reply to the idiot. He never touched a single shooting game in his life
There's a second Mushi?
Futari means two (2)! She doesn't have a dick I swear!
I only just yesterday learned that this game was made by a dude on /vg/. Pretty impressive for just some user.
Yes it's the best one too. You can get the japanese version for Xbox 360 and it runs on NTSC console
Cave has stopped giving a shit about PC so never.
>Produced by Ben Judd, aka the killer of japanese developers
user fucked up
Yep, I still have my copy from like 2010 or so. Shame it's not backwards-compatible on the Xbox One.
>this is actually how I remember that reading for ニ
I can never explain to anyone any of the weird things that help me rememeber Japanese or I'll get the most disgusted looks.
Guaranteed it wasn't made by the faggots at /shmupg/, they're too busy in their fantasy world of "jarpigs" and leftist conspiracies to even play.
I saw it on /agdg/'s website when I was looking for a free game creation software I could play around with in my free time.
Based
Has Touhou gotten any better since PCB or no?
>Touhou
It was never good
452295932
Moshi moshi, baitou desu
Jets N Guns is literally everything you asked for. All about loadout, story is ok but at least gives reason as to why you're doing all your missions, and its one of those self referential games that makes fun of the amount of violence you do. Only suggestion with the game is that you start on easy or normal difficulty because getting hit hurts a lot in hard and you don't have the weapon loadout yet to retaliate. Game has new game+ so you can start over again with all the cool shit from last playthrough, but the feature is more for seeing the foreshadowing that the story set up since your weapons will straight kill everything on screen before you see any threats coming
>people are STILL autistic about 2hu
Honest opinion here: They can be fun and have interesting mechanics but they are very amateurish compared to the classics that you think they are a joke when you are used to classic Raizing shooters and the like and then play a Touhou game. I know they are doujin games but I can't help but think it would be amazing if Zun collaborated with some talented artists and programmers.
Alright Bros recommend me a good shmup with tons of powerups. I always like the shmups with powerups that do crazy ass shit.
Don't recommend me stuff like ikaruga or 2hus, I hated thosem
Crimson Clover, Daifukkatsu
Yeah IN was great
I've been playing eXceed 3rd. The first two games kind of aren't that great
Are there any recent shmups that do the whole reflect-shield mechanic like Mars Matrix and Gigawing? Or something like Bangai-O where you retaliate bullet hell with bullet hell? Its the closest thing to a parry system I've seen in shmups and there has to be some recent indie out there that pulled it off
What's a fun side scrolling shmup that has tons of permanent upgrades and shit?
>reflect-shield mechanic
Ever played RefleX?
I thought Giga Wing was literally the only game to do that
I got crimson already. Where can I get waifukkatsu. Don't see it on steam
store.steampowered.com
I'd just download it off a torrent instead, not like Cave is going to make another shmup anyway
Reminder that the R90 Ragnarok is the best Shmup ship ever and you can't prove me wrong.
>3 THREE types of weaponized forces each being kickass with their own laser based move set on top of blocking enemy projectiles
>Has two types of Wave cannons
>The Hyper Wave Cannon lets the ship go fucking berserk with a starting shotgun blast, an onslaught of charged shots, and rotating bit devices acting as a shield in all degrees
>The Mega Wave cannon is a screen nuke that can't even be stopped by walls
>Both wave cannons can be changed on the fly unlike the forces
>The standard Vulcan cannon itself is already the perfect rapid fire machine gun only being topped by the Aero blaster ships which lack any extra firepower
>Is so unstopable they had to split it up into 3 different ships in R-Type Final with the third ship being able to charge up to 7 fucking times
>Is literally named after gods going into their last fight with their bitter rivals as it's goal was to exterminate all Bydo once and for all
I'd love to see any of your gay Touhou characters just try to stop this beast.
Hot shit, user does deliver. Looks like this game is part of some ALLTYNEX series but the rest of the games look like lock on firing like Crimson Clover. Does the rest of the series do RefleX shield too?
soulja blade tell'em
Nope, every game in the series has one central gimmick the game is centered around.
ALLTYNEX Second has swords that erase bullets and Kamui has Lighting and Huge Lasers
Kamui is such a sick game.
Nuts. Thanks for the heads up on RefleX, game looks solid
Should I be playing Mushi Futari 1 or 1.5?
Why not
Where can I use this ship it sounds fun
Well it's good indie shit, and there's a free demo for you to try out if you want.
It's made by like 6 guys iirc, but the main dev is from /agdg/ and still posts there
>OLD SHMUP GOOD
>NEW SHMUP BAD
R type 3 The Third Lightning for snes
also R Type Final for ps2 but like I said it's split between 3 ships and that's not too fun.
>those difficulty options
fucking kek
They're making mobile shooters now
Never said old shmup good
All of the other 194- games.
GODDAMN IT. I WANT THAT MODEL SO FUCKING BAAAAAAAD!!!!!
Cool thanks. Is it unlocked by default.
Really? Never seen one on Android
>Android
Japs are retarded and don't care about actually good OSs
Apparently 1.5 is a bit easier for the most part.
They didn't even intend to have an easier difficulty at first.
>Thinking this is real
You realise this was a made up story for le epic hardcore cred right?
NOOOOOOONONONONO THE FUCKING NARRATIVE Yea ForumsROS NOOOOOOOOONONONONONONONONO THIS CANT FUCKING BE NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO
>want to try out pic related
>heard the Xbox 360 port has big input lag
>apparently the TLB is almost literally unbeatable
Shit's so gud.
Is there anyway to play this without paying jewish prices?
Why hasn't the guy who made Danmaku Unlimited 3 patched in the ability to rebind movement keys to WASD? Something like that should be incredibly easy to do, yet he hasn't done it. I don't want to fucking play with the arrow keys.
Why does it not support ps4 controller on steam
Are people only saying this because Dunkey had it in his top 10 list or is it really that good?
Muchi Muchi Pork
>TLB so hard it killed the franchise
the girls are cute tho
What's the best DDP?
Other way around, dunkey putting it on his list is because it's so good
Actually I dunno but I heard it had some undertale like stuff in it
Agreed. Maria is super hot.
exhentai.org
The soundtrack is also excellent.
youtube.com
The very first one on arcade and Resurrection on Steam.
You can jailbreak your Xbox 360 and then download the game for free.
>tfw the see through dress on Hibachi
good shit
DaiOuJou
Is Raiden V worth getting on PS4? Before anyone answers, I'm more of a casual shmup player that likes flashy presentation and gameplay over difficulty. I had a great time with Caladrius Blaze for example, and also enjoy Crimzon Clover and the DoDonPachi series.
Was playing R-Type Delta a little while ago. Like it's aesthetic, was pretty fun.
>Doesn't like difficulty
>Plays DDP
?
The soundtrack by it self is worth the money. And no surprise too since it’s the same composer that did Lightning Force series. But that’s just me since I’m a huge sucker for shmup game music. Aside from that the game is pretty fun. Hard as shit and I still can’t get used to the bullet absorbing mechanic. The only negative I can think up for this game is the graphics. It’s not bad for what it’s trying to be it could be a lot better.
Is Graze Counter any good?
Even if it was stupidly easy it was a fun time. Rare to even see a straight shmup on the N64 anyway.
I'm a casual player so I never considered myself great at these games and don't play on super hard difficulties or anything, plus I tend to go through credits like potato chips as soon as things get ridiculous. I still like them, but I wouldn't say I'm amazing at them.
According to the credits the thunderforce music guy only did the first stage and the extra stage music, which is even more impressive since the rest of the soundtrack is still amazing.
How is the 360 version of the first Mushi vs. the Steam port? Besides expensive and JP console-only.
what game
I've been following it since it was announced, dude.
It's pretty bad. And I enjoyed Caladrius Blaze quite a bit. If you can get it for really cheap then maybe.
It's been two fucking years, when is the Black Label version of the game getting made already?
why shmup always so hard
you just bad
Huh well shit. Still, great soundtrack.
Is this game worth buying it?
>not even half as good as Danmaku 3
Not that user but rank system in Gradius is actually fine until Gradius 4, that one uses survival timer+old rank system stacked on top of each other, and literally everything is controlled by rank.
Now take in account the rank is not resetted, just slightly decreased on death, and take in account you lose all power ups.
Result? If you survived 4-5 stages then died once, your credit is fucked because you will be forced to recover at a way too high rank.
All I said also applies to Parodius series, they use the same system as G4, with Parodius Da doubling this timer speed every time you take a "Speed Up", special mention to this one because no other games penalize you for using that.
Yknow, I'm a die hard shmup fan, and I've played almost all of the talked-about ones, and I could never for the life of me understand why people legitimately enjoy Sine Mora. It's fucking terrible. Like, forget the braindead stupid fact that arcade mode is locked to hard - which is really fucking hard - and need to do the shittt story mode otherwise, but you've also got a time based system that's so much more punishing than a traditional lives system, because it punishes slow players not with a bad score, but with a game over. You've got shit levels like the godawful waste disposal shit where you need to hide in garbage. And you've got the most baffling thing of all: utilizing the gimmick of slowing down time punishes your score. It's a total slog to play. Stop reccomending it. Play Gradius, or Deathsmiles, or Tengai if you're looking for good horizontal shmups, or the countless vertical shmps that are better.
Didn't they just come out with a version of Ketsui for Playstation?
more liek giga wang
That'd be cool, haven't heard anything about it
Cave isn't making it, they just let anyone like M2 or Degica port their games now tho
>No scans of the MUSHIHIMESAMA FUTARI Mushihime Sama Settei Shiryoshu Ltd Art Book
It hurts. If I wasn't broke i'd buy it from ebay just to get those sweet scans.
It's meant to be played many times, again and again. You're not supposed to be able to clear it your first try. You unlock various things each time you get a bit farther, like different bullet and ship colors and various filters.
I know the dev, he was very uncompromising in making it incredibly difficult because that's the kind of shmup he likes. And I think he succeeded because it's honestly one of the hardest games in the genre I've yet to play. Still a lot of fun thuogh.
Giga Wing's alright.
Wonder how long it'll be till Degica port Mushihimesama Futari to Steam
Don't forget that the soundtrack is ASS as well.
>Play on Very Easy
>It's not easy at all and still got game over
Holy fuck I love shmups so much
Why does this genre have to be dead?
I want to make one someday but I'm not really a designer, I have a scoring system in mind I'm happy with but I don't think I could put stages together
man crimzon clover spoiled me. I invested so much time playing CC, loving the visuals and soundtrack, getting to EX Boss 2 with type 3 arcade-original after 1cc'ing A-O with type z that playing other shmups wasn't as fun for me to get into. The only other game I put a lot of time into was DU3 and god damn that game's soundtrack is banging. I loved crimzon clover's practice mode's customization, so being able to practice on DU3's bosses was a plus.
For sure dead in the AAA space since Cave stopped making arcade ones. Just another genre that indie studios have to keep alive.
Damn Daifukkatsus BL mode is pretty cool
Most of Psykio's library has been ported to the Switch, and those games are awesome save for the shoddy Zero Gunner 2- demake. Indie devs are also doing pretty good with things like Blue Revolver and Zero Ranger. Plus Psyvariar Delta is on steam and is coming to consoles soon, and is an excellent game. M2 Shotniggers is porting over Cave's stuff slowly but surely. The genre never died, but it's definitely not mainstream. Probably for the best, considering these games are generally for the hardcore crowd.
Gigawing 1 is definitely fun, though it does feel pretty straightforward for a shmup of its time. A lot of enemy fire tracks where your plane is positioned at the time so rather than bullet pattern its remembering when enemies show up and shoot at you so you can reflect shield their shots back at them.
If you can, get 2. Capcom threw out all the stops to make that game as pretty as possible for an early 2000s title, and its a much tighter and more refined experience that encourages you to reflect shield a lot more and feel like a badass for beating the shit out of fleets with their own bullets. Downside to 2 is that it feels a lot easier
if it's bad i guess you don't need to play it
it's not bad
I fucking love the music in that, stage three eats all my fucking continues though jesus. I'd feel a bit awkward calling it my favourite shmup if I hadn't beaten regular Daifukkatsu, but seeing as I've really been in a shmup mood maybe I'll finally grind it out.
youtube.com
the Suguri games, because of the dash moves
>See Garegga hyped up as this amazing game with crazy difficulty
>The difficulty comes from extremely hard to see bullets being fired
Fuck off, that isn't difficulty
DDPDFK BL has such a good new soundtrack. Real intense, perfect for just how hard it is now.
Though I think the original game's stage 5 music is better then the BL redo.
Kind of like how people worship Dragon Blaze, but it combines Psykio's trademark fast bullet speed with bullet hell-esque patterns. It would be like if Cave put Mushihimesama bullet patterns in Dangun Feveron. I have ZERO clue how anyone is supposed to 1CC both loops.
CCWI is pretty overrated. It's just a poojin Cave rip-off. It looks pretty ugly, it's way too long, the difficulty is just annoying try-hard shit, and everything about it smells like poojin.
>Poojin
Christ /shmupg/ are raiding
How do I git gud?
>Why does this genre have to be dead?
Because they never changed with the times.
Of course they did. They just didn't pander to casual retards like all the other genres.
Gamers are fucking cancer and 99% of them are legit retarded. No wonder nobody plays shmups.
You can change the color of the bullets in the M2 port. The Saturn port has an option to make some of the more annoying grey bullets into yellow orbs.
>Difficulty is try-hard
What the fuck does this even mean? It's meaningless
Well this is pretty jew of Taito.
Yep we're being raided
How?
It means that the game is unbalanced. You probably never even really played this game.
I actually played this shit, and it's so difficult that it's not fun at all anymore.
I'm not the one who was talking about CCWI, other anons were. Calling difficulty "Try-hard" indicates to me you were too much of a casual to be good
The collection includes Darius, Darius II, Sagaia, and Darius Gaiden, but they locked away additional games in a special edition. The special edition also includes Darius Twin, Darius Force, the Genesis version of Darius II, and Darius Alpha.
I am in the top ten with every ship on steam on arcade original mode.
In contrary to you talking out of your ass, I actually play shmups.
And the difficulty in CCWI is beyond retarded. It's like the game was only designed for superplayers.
Back to /shmupg/ with you, raging casual
>raging casual
again, post your score
i have 5 trillion in this shit game
it's not fun at all, it's only fun for superplayers or for complete retards like you who varely played it
Huh, that is pretty jew.
>Complains about difficulty
>Calls others casuals
Besides, I keep telling you, I'm not even the user playing CCWI
Do you even play shmups? CC is just about the standard length for a shmup, and its difficulty on normal is tuned to the easier side. I'd hate to see what you think of Radiant Silvergun, which is uglier, maybe three times as long, and about thirty times more difficult, yet is regarded as one of the best in its class.
Don't reply to "poojin" posters, they're mentally ill people from /shmupg/, who don't play shmups but obsess about twitch and e-celebs
I was thinking about getting this collection but this really sucks.
OH look another try-hard who has no fucking clue
>Do you even play shmups?
Yes in contrary to you retards here I actually play shmups.
That's why I actually have an idea what I talk about. I actually played this game.
>Try-hard
Ignore him, it's a raid.
To get back on track for the topic... What is your favorite kind of scoring system in SHMUPs?
Combos?
Medals?
Ranks?
I appreciate the depth and skill required for chaining but personally I hate it. I like the ranking system based Yagawa uses
I wish grazing was used in more shmups, it's one of my favorite mechanics, I love the grazing system used in Castle of Shikigami
>most of Yea Forums will never understand this feeling of accomplishment and personal improvement
How do you convince people that shmups are worth buying, playing and investing time into? They look at the game and think it's "only" a 30-40 minute game. They cry a "lack of content". They say the difficulty is just "coin-guzzling" or "artificial difficulty."
I love everything, depending on my mood, but my least favorite is probably chaining just because it's too high IQ and fucking up once ruins the entire run, and my favorite is probably grazing since it rewards good movement. In another timeline, Psyvariar got the attention Ikaruga got.
ranks
What's the best Psyvariar game?
I love grazing. Any shmup that has a grazing mechanic is up the ranks a little more in my eyes. I do like combos as well though.
Never gave a fuck about scorings, I just want to stay alive through the whole thing
How do you get the true ending in Zeroranger?
I unironically enjoy beat hazard. am i not cool enough for this thread?
Almost decided on what shmup to focus on, I have it between
>Garegga
>Mushi
>Daifukkatsu
Frankly I'm not sure if you or anyone else in this thread have the Autism to really learn Garegga.
It's pretty cool, shmup purists would say it isn't a shmup but fuck those nerds. I thought it had a sequel in VR?
Why's that? It seems interesting
BH2 is the screenshot there, it's still in
>early access
and I refuse to touch it before it's out. Not sure if it has vr but the effects would probably fucking kill me if I tried it anyway
Oh it's super interesting. It's just ridiculously complex to learn if you're trying to play for score. Managing rank is one of the most important things and it's also one of the most obtuse systems I've ever seen in a SHMUP. It's not just suiciding to lower your rank, there has to be some thought to it. Not to mention at many points you'll have no lives in stock which means no buffer.
1. Don't die.
2. Save continues.
3. Don't die.
babel sword
I'm kind of stuck on step 1.
Just got a 1cc on parallel after 1 year of casually playing. The TLB is a bit boring too be honest.
Works OTB for me on Linux
Rtype 1 and 2 ex are getting physicals for ps4 and switch. Never played em. Are they worth the price hike?
Pretty much this
What games did Yea Forums one-cc or was close to it?
For me it's
>Border Down
Actually 1CC'd by exploiting the adaptive difficulty
>Einhander
1CC on normal, my favorite shmup
>Mars Matrix
Made it to the last level on 1 credit
Score gives you extra lives tho.
Who cares just hack your switch
garegga is not complex at all
it's just dumb unintuitive design
>Beat Hazard 2
It took me a while before going back to Apocalyptic 300%.
The medium space junk is what kills me the most as it spawns a smaller piece that slams into my face at point blank.
Eat shit.
Based and Redpilled
>/shmupg/ gets angry if I don't play shmups
>But they also get angry when I do
Can't win over there
Just say you love hellsinker or whatever these contrarian fucks pretend to like atm.
They hate Hellsinker because it's a "poojin". They don't even seem to like shmups, they'd just rather get mad and pretend to be oppressed
I want to clear Radiant Silvergun but I hate chaining pls help
I can't help but I sympathise with you hating chaining
I want to _____ Anna!
>Soundtrack by Hyakutaro Tsukumo
Well damn, even if its not all of them, its nice that he did some on a shmup.
I just wish for an actual TF sequel.
I love point blanking, it's just so thrilling and feels very dangerous too. Naturally it has to be tied with some other type of scoring system but as long as it's there I'm good.
He didn't do the first stage either. He did the OP and the extra stage songs (the latter was used in the trailer).
And all those steam keys are used, so here's the actual back of the OST.
Read the post that's right before it, it's literally the dev that convinced me to add Very Easy telling the same story.
What makes Ketsui so good?
horizontal > vertical
fight me faggots you know it to be true
This but unironically but the opposite
The scoring system is pretty neat and generally more forgiving than DDP's chaining.
Motivate me to Ikaruga. I spent like 5 hours grinding out stage 4 last to unlock the final stage but I still couldn't get it so I just sort of dropped it.
>There are people in this very thread that can't beat Ikaruga
Mushi is the easiest one to get through (unless you're playing on Ultra, I guess)
It's the scoring. Easy to do but hard to master to get high scores. Also the soundtrack's really good.
I think I could eventually, I've just gotten bored with it. I have no clue why they thought making two of the bosses into extremely tight movement challenges was at all a good idea, in fact. So much of the game just shoves you into a cramped space with hardly any room to work with and it feels constricting after some time. Might come back to it eventually since I already made it so far but I still have to agree that it's rather overrated and I hope RSG is better.
What are some games other than shmups that I can play in tate mode? Got a monitor with pivot specifically for shmups but I'm only just now realizing how infrequently I use it.
I was thinking about making a SHMUP vgm radio on YouTube
Besides obluis shit like cave and touhous, what should I add?
Darius, R-Type, Gradius, Parodius, Star Solider, Twinbee, Treasure shooters like Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga.
Based Ibara, Darius, Gradius, Treasure, Garegga
Fire Shark on Genesis.
The sound of the flamethrower makes me ejaculate.
Flame Zapper Kotsujin, Armed Police Batrider
probs worth it digging through the OSTs of some newer indie and doujin games to get less obvious picks
I love Border Down.
I took a break from it for a couple of weeks and then played it again a few days ago and it was more fun than ever
Oh if we're suggesting Doujin games I can't recommend Siter Skain's stuff more. Kamui, RefleX and Alltynex Second.
Ether Vapor Remaster is pretty good too but stay away from Astebreed.
Steredenn is pretty good too for randomized flavor.
sauce?
Just gave it a go. Reminds me a lot of Vapor Trail.
And yeah, the flamethrower makes a pretty good noise.
>I..I wasn't meant to post that, honest!
Is there any actual difference between shmups and bullet hells?
I've heard they're not exactly the same thing
I enjoy shmups.
gtfo
oh wait my bad, I thought we were in /shmupg/
Let me give you the /shmupg/ experience
>Fucking kike cunt leftist jarpig no skill tranny
Bullet hell is a subgenre of shmups meaning the games which have tons of bullets like Touhous or Cave games. Compare them to more traditional games like Raiden and you'll understand the difference.
But yeah lately bullet hell has got kind of synonymous with shmups
How long does it take getting used to stick for shmups?
Bullet Hells are about avoid slow curtains of very clumped together bullets a majority of the time.
Your average shooter besides that usually use fast shooting smaller projectiles that aren't usually that clumped.
Why does ESPgaluda emulate so badly? I've been to 2 barcades that had it on a mame cabinet recently and it ran at sub 20 fps
Make sure you enable Rapid fire in options.
Max upgraded flamethrower is gorgeous.
Cave actually contacted the MAME devs about not having their games be playable in it. What we have now when it comes to Cave game emulation in MAME is the best we're gonna get without Cave going after the MAME devs again. You gotta buy the actual games for PC/360 for the best experience.
why not play it on MAME instead? they fixed the copy protection and it has sound now
Faggots like it because it gives the illusion of difficulty while having a gay faggot story.
>Cave actually contacted the MAME devs about not having their games be playable in it.
Don't tell me mame devs actually caved in?
They can't be that retarded, right?
They work just fine to play on older versions of MAME like 0.197, and it's quite easy to find ROMs, for what it's worth. Don't know about the newest version.
I didn't even know it existed elsewhere. I'll definitely try it out later today, thanks user.
yeah, you could say they CAVEd in
What game is this? It was in that PC gamer article they just wrote.

must have been a repost I saw.
Thank you, turns out it's not even a straight up shooter either.

So I never played any shmups before but I just got Devil Engine and been enjoying that so far.
Apart from Zero Ranger and Mushi, are there any other must play shmups for a newcomer?
Is it ever a good idea to play multiple shmups at once or should I just keep focussing on a single game?
I think they have a couple of glitches and timing issues no matter which version of MAME you're using.
Keep switching around until you find one that clicks. Dodonpachi is a good place to check out, Mushihimesama is cool, Hellsinker is awesome, Strikers are cool.
Could always play some of the classics like Gradius, R-Type and Darius.
Cho Ren Sha 68K, it's free
Touhou
Play Deathsmiles
I'm actually really enjoying Devil Engine despite some user claiming it's one of the hardest.
I'm not very good at all, I still game over halfway through stage 3 but I've only been playing for 2 days.
Honestly I'd rather stay on the Switch for now if there's anything on there. I got Thunder Force for like 4 bucks.
>Akai Katana on PC never
I've never seen people talk about it online but it was the game that got me into shmups.
>280 post shmup thread on Yea Forums
Is this real life?
Pic related
not interested in bullet hell honestly
BASED HARRY
You mentioned Mushi though.
I haven't played it but it looks like the spiritual successor to Progear no Arashi. Who knows if Degica have a bunch more Cave shmups to put on the Steam store in the coming years.

my bad then because people have been saying it's a good entry for the genre without telling me it's a bullet hell.
Blue Revolver is very good, plus the score mechanic is simpler than most others.
>no truxton
any reason why Ikaruga isn't mentioned here?
Damn fine list
I'm not how to use the Phobos ship to defeat the last boss at higher difficulty. It just seems too slow to dodge and weave.
I've been doing well with Nemesis, though.
Because its a puzzle game
Seriously, is Zero Ranger actually good or are people just pretending to like the game because Dunkey likes it?
Yea Forums SHMUP threads are better until the /vg/ autists find the thread and bring their shitposting garbage into it. I don't think anyone in /shmup/ actually plays anything, they just argue with tripfags in the thread all day.
OLD GOOD NEW BAD
now THIS a real shmup game.
Thanks for indirectly informing me that this was on sale for the Switch as well even if it was only $6 instead of $2.
Didn't expect to be thrown right into the game as soon as it booted up. Also GOD your ship fucking sucks when starting out. It really makes you appreciate it when the damn thing has a semblance of rapid fire.
Are there any other Thunder Force bros in here?
It's far from being the hardest or even challenging shmup series, but goddamn I can't get enough of the concept. I fucking love the weapons switching mechanics and I wish more games would do it the way Thunder Force does it.
I'm not by any stretch actually good at shmups, but I've enjoyed Raiden, Ikaruga, Deathsmiles and the Danmaku series, but Thunder Force manage to always be my favorite series amongst them all. TF4 is, to this day, the only shmup I have 1cc on the hardest difficulty and, also, the only one I actually cared about 1ccing. I spent months playing tye game every single day to achieve it.
there aren't really any new shmups because the genre is dead
all you get now is some indie bullshit
>Picking an R-Type Ship
>Actually fucking knowing R-Type, since most people here confuse it for gradius, especially on smash threads
Now THAT'S based.
Depends on if you're used to using a stick. The no. 1 thing is to use what you're most comfortable with. I feel like I'm better at macro dodging on pad since you can just tap a direction but I use my stick more. I lot of really good players use a keyboard.
how do I get good at this kind of game? I play games mostly at the hardest difficulty but when it comes to danmaku shit I AM FUCKING SHIT. So.. any tips? other than practice of course.
Exactly this, they also get mad at you for playing other games but then get made at you for playing shmups. It's the worst general on the board
>Gradius
>Smash
?
It is good, it got its share of praise from shmup fans before Dunkey made the video. If fact fans of the genre were interested in the game way before it was even known as Zeroranger. It's a very solid game and the devs obviously love the genre.
But Dunkey has certainly brought a lot of newcomers to the genre, it also helps that ZR is also a very newcomer-friendly game with the lax resources and lots of hype moments and twists in the story.
Shmups is the one genre where you have to start in easy modo to git gud
Once you master it you have a shot to harder modes
???
Practice, although I get tilted easily and once I die I instantly quit and switch games
You have to spend a lot of time to get good at the harder kinds of games. Even something like 1ccing Touhou on normal is going to take a novice multiple days of training. The games themselves are only 30 minutes long, so the real content is practicing them repeatedly and improving yourself, not quickly clearing them and being done.
Go on a smash thread.
If in any chance, you come accross a picture of mention of the R9-Arrowhead, nobody will fucking know what it comes from.
There's no such thing as a nice shmup thread
Besides a raid a few hours ago this one has been great
It is a good entry, bullet hells aren't inherently more or less difficult than not-bullet-hells. There's more to difficulty than just the amount of bullets, if you play the genre more you will realise this. Mushihimesama is one of the easier bullet hells: it has only five stages and fairly simple bullet patterns.
Let's get this shit started
>western shmups or western arcade games in general
1. Show Grapefruit some proof that you don't really need to go through the exact same bossfight a second time
2. Smash your way out of the 'loop'
3. Don't fall to despair
4. Follow this guy's advice
I kinda have the same problem as this user.
I've followed it since it was free and called Final Boss, it's seriously one of the best indie shmups
Western shmups have been recently good, not much to argue honestly
Parodius has a single manga volume. I bought it, might scan it later. Might also scan an art book if it's cheap. Maybe Mushihime-sama.
Technically it is on PC, just illegally
You can try to change your mindset from "I want to win" to "I want to practice", that way you dont get so tilted from losing, because it's part of the practicing process. Of course that's easier said than done.
>Western shmups have been recently good
Thanks user, hope it works.
>poojin poojin poojin
Great argument retard
It might be the only shmup Square ever made, but it was so fucking good. Probably one of if not the best cinematic shmups on the market.
Sucks there was never a sequel spiritual or otherwise, but it's nice seeing nods to it in other things like World of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3.
Parodius got a manga? What?
Please share!
Was the arcade board using Windows like Deathsmiles II?
They still have better patterns than most CAVE games imo. I don't get tired of playing stuff like PDH or books, nothing compares.
Its soundtrack alone can make money, even today it was considered one of the best, just look how many times some of its track being remixed.
>Broken Thunder is a mess
Damn, but its ideas are great. Its just an incomplete mess, I just hope someone can recreate the actual thing someday.
Ikaruga has a myriad of flaws that I can't understand why people seem to ignore. Scoring system is frankly crap; color-based enemy chaining means you have to perfectly shoot in the order Treasure wants you to, unless you want to break your chain by shooting whatever you feel like (or the even lamer option of having to let enemies pass you by because you're afraid of getting a broken chain). So prepare to play like a robot if you ever want to score well in Ikaruga, where routes are even more strict and less interesting than Dodonpachi. But hey, at least it's not as bad as Silvergun's scoring. It also has the infamy of being called super difficult because the game gives you absolutely no items once, so the only way to get extends is first learning the ins and outs of the game in order to score well. However, by then you should be able to no-miss Ikaruga anyways, so what was the point in learning? Now the polarity mechanics are awful because swapping colour invalidates practically all bullet patterns in the game, since you can just absorb everything in your way rendering whatever looks impossible meaningless. This seems neat at first until it becomes a chore to soak up every bullet on screen to raise your score, after you cope with the fact that it turns survival play into a boring cakewalk. Boss designs are rubbish save for the first and last dudes. Mooks have no life to them; most don't even shoot at you and simply drift away. This plus the color-based chaining system makes it feel more like playing a puzzle game instead of an actual shmup. Not to mention the fact that it's grossly overrated due to its OST and graphics (if you dig sepia tones making backgrounds look like dogshit) by casuals who hardly even play shmups. Ikaruga's simply a poor game that for some reason has a cult following that loves to bitch at you if you ever happen to question the quality of their beloved masterpiece.
thank you user :)
You need to learn to look at the screen in the right way, most likely your skills in other genres won't translate into shmups.
Some general tips:
- don't look at your ship unless you're doing really precise dodging on a small area, look a bit above it instead
- try to constantly think about where bullets are going to instead of just where they are now
- try to think about how you can manipulate the way the enemies shoot bullets with your own positioning: eg. sometimes it's better to wait a moment so all enemies will concentrate all their fire in one place
- if you face a really difficult pattern, treat it as a puzzle and try to figure out the easiest way to get through it, experiment with different tactics
- be patient, at the end of the day the only way to really progress is to bang your head against the things you're bad at until you figure them out
I recognize that copypasta. Which forum is it from though?
Which games are most similar to touhou?
Touhou clone fangames like Book of Star Mythology etc
deathsmiles
Castle of Shikigami?
Probably from the farm.
Think it like fighting games
Once you're just starting it and go online you suck and you have to learn how the mechanics work by trial and error
Same thing with shmups, you boot the game once and you suck and have to learn the mechanics and how to dodge until you got gud
That's how those arcade games work, and why they are in decline
Fightan games aren't popular, the trash talk around it is
>Mushihime-sama Futari guide/artbook goes for $65 minimum used
nah fuck that
>Fightan games aren't popular, the trash talk around it is
This. Look at /r/kappa on reddit or /fgg/ on /vg/. For every person there that actually plays fighting games, you have 10 people who just hangs around looking for FGC-related drama or blowups.
>/shmupg/ is now literally doxxing someone
this thread must be the only good place to discuss shmups
nooooo
What do you all think of Monolith?
Not exactly a shmup, but real good.
The key is to shift your focus and find enjoyment in small victories. Use practice mode or save states and play individual levels. First make your goal just beating them without game overing, then beating them with less deaths, then beating them with no deaths and using minimal bombs, then learn to do all that consistently. Though for the later levels you can afford yourself a death or two usually, sometimes more depending on the amount of extra lives, and using bombs liberally is good when starting out. Also, it's important to think about what you are doing and analyze the patterns you are dealing with. A good way to see what type of pattern a boss throws out is to stand still at different points of the screen and see how the pattern changes, it lets you quickly notice which parts are aimed, which are static and which are random. Watching your own videos helps too. You can then push past that and start working on your score. Also if you are getting pissed off take a break, frustration makes you less adaptable and open minded thus only causing more frustration. Also make sure to do full runs occasionally to test what you've learned. If you can see the fun in this kind of practice you will progress very quickly while having a good time.
Binding of Isaac but as an actual shmup. Pretty damn fun.
Its pretty decent but the difficulty curve is stupid, game's too easy until the hard mode tlb and has no practice mode. Makes it frustrating to learn
/vg/ just combines the bad sides of Yea Forums with the bad sides of communities where people know each other
Well it naturally happens with /vg/ generals because a majority of the people that post in them post in them every single day with "characters" forming among the anons that feel like they deserve more attention, most of the time leading to thread drama and the creation of Discord groups and such so they get more attention. It's just self propagating poison.
Based and bydopilled.
For some reason Blazing Star is my favorite. Why does nobody make hori shmups anymore?
Yes they do, have you ever tried LOOKING or are you waiting for them to magically fall into your lap? Just recently we had Zangeki Warp, Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours, Infinos Gaiden, Rolling Gunner, Devil Engine and R-Type Dimensions
Why are they like this?
Shmupg are just 3 extremely autistic shitposters that drove everyone else out by flinging shit 24/7 for years.
How much shit flinging can there be about SHMUPs?
bullet heaven 1 and 2 is just touhou with a deviantart skin on it and a handful of tweaks
For the most part they don't talk about shmups, but they just ban evade and continue their offtopic shitflinging when reported.
Does this have online coop?
It's kind of sad such a small genre attracts those sorts of folk. I remember hearing stories about shmupg on /vr/, so I rarely went in there, but from what you're saying, it seems they've gotten even worse
I'm going to list a dozen of my favourite shmups as possible recommendations, maybe give something new for one of you to play.
Section Z (NES)
M.U.S.H.A. (Genesis)
R-Type Final (PS2)
B-Wings (NES)
Silk Worm (NES)
Jets 'n Guns Gold (Steam)
Darius Burst Chronicle Saviours (Steam)
Thundercade (NES)
Tiger-Heli (NES)
Gradius III (SNES), specifically on the hidden Arcade Mode
Thunder Spirits (SNES)
Raiden Trad (SNES) (also features simultaneous co-op)
Tried to keep things to only one entry of a given series if applicable, which is why no multiple R-Type, Raiden, Darius, Gradius, or Thunder Force games.
To be fair shmup fans outside of Yea Forums seem to be chill. But competitive and difficult genres certainly attract social morons and when combined with the general Yea Forums culture it just goes overboard.
I fucking love sora man, fantastic game.
>shmup fans outside of Yea Forums
God I wish they were easy to find
Out of all the R-Types you pick Final? Fucking Final?
>little girls flying around
Yeah nah.
Esp. series is the only exception
He also picked Dariusburst Chronicles
Bump
>Raiden Trad
What the fuck is wrong with you user
Just play the real deal on MAME or ports.
Not him but final was my favorite too
I actually don't know shit about Darius. I played the first game and was like haha this is wide and that's pretty much my whole experience with it. I'm not a man of culture.
Then play them? They're pretty faithful recreations of the arcade originals which you can easily emulate on MAME. They're solid games, 2 in particular which is imo the best in the series and removes a lot of the flaws present in 1 though it is more difficult.
4-B is cooler, kid
youtu.be
2 is too harsh for me, especially the Japanese version. I just stick to 1/3/Delta. Those three are fucking nice.
What the fuck is CAVE doing nowadays aside from ports?
I loved collecting all the ships. Also the final final sequence of returning to your own time was rad. But if not Final, I'd have gone with III.
Fond memories of playing the simultaneous multiplayer on the couch with a friend for hours. I admit that's entirely a nostalgia pick.
Well it was either that or Twin, but I liked how Burst CS played on my multi-monitor setup.
So I guess this is the right place to ask. How the fuck can I play Psyvariar 2?
mobage trash
look into if the PS4 disc contains the whole game or is just an on disc download key, unless you're a collectorfag the whole advantage of physicals is they will work as long as the media is readable.
All Switch carts have the full game unless the box is marked otherwise (and it's obvious if that's the case, see the switch box art for la noire for an example of what I'm talking about)
If you can 1cc the first one you can do the same with 2, just need a bit more practice. 2 feels like what 1 was supposed to be like since it removes so many of the crutches and safe spots that ruin boss fights
Caladrius Blaze is legit, despite the sex appeal cash grab appearance
>It's kind of sad such a small genre attracts those sorts of folk
That is nothing new. People got banned at Maidens of the Caleidoscop, a site for touhoufags, for saying that they like Cave titles more. The shmup subplebbit also had a mod that deleted everything he didn't like.
The old Gamespy subforum for shmups was really cool though.
The Steel Empire port is decent but not worth the price at all. Buy it from Kinguin for $1 or pirate it if you want to play it.
Shmups, for better or for worse, attract people who spend time practicing and perfecting a half hour game over and over again for hundreds of hours on end. So it's no surprise that games that demand autistic levels of perfectionism attract autists.
>tfw you'll never experience Thunder Force IV without the slowdowns
The game just isn't that good though, even the reviewers in the 90s panned it.
suguri 3 fuckin WEN
Honestly I'm surprised that this thread hasn't devolved into shitposting against some company or game
Did you know that there's a sequel to Jets N Guns in the works?
I'm surprised that a shmup thread on Yea Forums of all places was able to last so long without shmup haters and scrubs shitposting the thread to oblivion.
Vaporware
because the usual shitposters are asleep or just cant comprehend shmups
Then what is this? store.steampowered.com
For a game that focuses on sex appeal, caladrius doesn't have that lot of r34
I had a lot of fun with aces of the luftwaffe
That's both amazing and very disappointing. Doesn't really have a lot of fanart period compared to other shmups.
see
Dadregga
It's 2 am in Australia.
>3 different characters with vastly different styles
There are 4. One is unlockable by beating stage 4 with 1 credit.

>early access
Yeah, gonna wait when it's done.
Not that guy but it's 10:18am in my end of America. The kids are in school, but I would not be surprised if you get some bad eggs here and there as the day goes on.
This game is pretty fun
I don't even bother with Yea Forums on weekends anymore. It gets REALLY bad.
Is there any way to run Cho Ren Sha in window mode and with alternate key bindings?
I heard you can use a Windows emulator and play it through that. Does that cause higher input lag? Also, which Windows emulator is best?
I'm on the same boat. But I'm still surprised it is actually happening.
Fuck them and those laser shooting ones
Cho-Ren-Sha is such a good game, it's mind blowing.
That's why you don't stay at the bottom of the screen, could've avoided that by going down
Never ever. The last prot they did was DoDonPachi Resurrection and that was back in 2016.
The ports must have sold like dogshit, or at least bad enough for them not even considering paying Cave for another license.
Steam spy estimates that both only sold between 20 and 50k units, which is kind of depressing.
Man, playing hellsinker after such a long time reminds me how bad I am at this game. Everything moves so goddamn fast, your characters, the bullets and the enemies too.
Also still can't figure out what genre does this game's OST fits in
considering the genre it's not that bad 50k units sold
we don't have to think like a AAA game
As far as I know, Cave thinks their products are premium for some reason, so I can imagine it was barely enough to cover what they had to pay to Cave.
But I may be wrong and I have no source.
I've been playing Danmaku Unlimited 3 for a while, and I found something: Touch controls actually work very well for SHMUPs, and gives you more control of your character, especially if you use a stylus..
The game is pretty fun, even when starting on Easy Spirit mode. I'm hoping to work my way up to True over the next month, and I may start a thread when I achieve some significant progress.
Also dat soundtrack:
youtube.com
tfw I've been playing Galaga Revenge on mobile phone and while it's not hard it's very fun. I love the touch controls too
Mah nig
youtube.com
>spoiler
It has some upsides and and downsides, for one you have easier control to your character but fucks you over when you got trapped in a corner
It's just an estimation though since Valve had to hide the game collection of steam accounts because of the EU's new data security law. So it could also be on the lower end.
Meanwhile all of their RPG maker stuff sells really well, so it woudn't suprise me if we never see a Cave port again. At least the Game Tengoku release actually happened.
When will best girl get a new game?
I've been following Ebo since 2010
Around the same time best girl gets her own.
I actually got into shooting games when I downloaded the Deathsmiles demo on an iPhone4 on a whim when the mobile port was released.
f
that means that I need a 360
why is her game's ost have such strange names? youtube.com
Man, I haven't thought about Karous in forever. More games need grimy DnB as their OSTs.
No kidding, a 360 with Japanese region code is the best thing for shmups.
Ikaruga is the Third Strike of shmups where people take an alright game, and make it out to be the holy grail of the genre.
i have a 360 modded for pirate copies
does that circunvent the region lock too?
I dunno about this one specifically. The names in Milestone songs were always a bit quirky, but Karous' stuff had more of an edge than usual.
Like "You can't fxxk me"
youtube.com
It's the go-to title to namedrop for people who want to pretend to be scholars on shmups. It's like hipsters namedropping John Cage to make it seem like they're encyclopedias of music history.
I used to play the living shit out of ChoRenSha. I love this game.
>Yea Forums now hates Ikaruga
Wtf happened
There was also a video from him where he made fun of some Gamespot(?) review that praised it as the best shmup ever without going into any detail, but he deleted it later.
Sad that he stopped.
I really liked Graze Counter.
You're new to SHMUP fans, aren't you?
Many folks are vocal about their feelings, good or bad, concerning Ikaruga. Sometimes even to the point where some fanboys start hating Treasure as a whole.
It's similar to how many SHMUP fans hate Touhou due to its fanbase, but unlike Touhou, Ikaruga's enthusiast base is small since it doesn't have character appeal like Touhou.
>go play Mars Matrix
>go play Mars Matrix
>go play Mars Matrix
>go play Mars Matrix
Preach on, king
shmup community is full of weebs and hipsters
ikaruga is too manly for them
This is the only game I ever 1CCd
Or maybe its because Ikaruga is overrated and the most mainstream shmup ever
What kind of monitors would you all recommend for shmups?
I have a standard horizontal monitor, but I don't like that 2/3rds of my screen is covered by wallpaper art from the game or just black screen. I want a vertical monitor exclusively for shmups. What vertical monitors are good for shmupping? Are there any low input lag ones for like less than 200 dollars?
>shmup thread
>develops into a shit flinging war centered around Ikaruga, between people who don't even play it
I wish treasure make new games again
the most mainstream shmup is probably gradius
but since that's oldschool, it's still accepted by the hipsters
ikaruga is not overrated at all
you're just too stupid play it correctly
There's still nothing better than Radiant Silvergun. Are other companies even trying?
>get the shitty final boss patterns if you didn't score high enough throughout the whole game making it almost impossible to clear
>get rewarded for playing well throughout the whole game instead of just being a spectacle shooter
>well thought out chaining system that encourages exploration of the controls/weapons and multiple playthroughs don't use the Save System c'mon now guys
None of that means it's a bad game, or warrants hate unless you are a contrarian speg.
You know that's not true: Space Invaders and Galaga are the most mainstream SHMUPs. Most gamers don't know jack about the genre outside of those, much like how they can't name a Roguelike that's not Rogue or NetHack.
Ikaruga is like Smash Melee, in that the people who hate it are Perma-salty, and will not let their salt go even after decades of the game not being in the public eye.
No auto-fire is a pretty huge blemish on an otherwise fun game.
>most mainstream shmup ever
I don't recall Ikaruga having 2 terabytes of fan music and thousands of doujinshi and millions of fan art but okay.
>and the most mainstream shmup ever
Damn that's a luxury if that's the case. Shmups are deader than dead nowadays
youtu.be
What a lad
>Ikaruga good
>Radiant Silvergun bad
What final level did you end the game on? There are a couple ways the game could end you know.
No auto-fire is a feature
SHMUPs are like fighting games, in that both have horrible communities who act like absolute cunts to newbies and advanced players alike and then wonder why no one wants to play the games anymore.
Ok. The no auto-fire feature is a pretty huge blemish on an otherwise fun game.
What do you all think of twin-stick shooters? Do they count as shmups? Which twin-stick shooters would you recommend? Is Nex Machina any good?
Ironic that someone just recently posted how weird it is that the thread hasn't regressed into shitflinging around one game or developer
I can't stand twin stick shooters. Laziest game design ever conceived.
that's not true
Under Defeat HD
Mamoru-Kun no Norowarete Shimatta
Results speak for themselves.
I'm convinced this is some kind of troll attempt, since people are pulling out the Wojaks and are suddenly concerned about Ikaruga when the game was only scantly mentioned in the rest of the thread.
This thread is pretty comfy and tame though.
Fine as a concept, mostly crappy in execution. Robotron, Nex Machina and Geometry Wars are pretty much the only ones worth playing unless you count roguelites like Nuclear Throne and Monolith but those are very different. Nex Machina in particular is quite nice, it has some solid level design which is a rarity for the genre and a fairly fun scoring system.
I think that it's largely just a counter-reaction to people who don't play shmups in general but still like Ikaruga and consider it better than "generic" shmups (which they don't even play)
where?
I found pad way easier for small movements, but at least for the Dualshock 4, it starts to murder your hands after a few hours of focused play, and I imagine that gets really bad when you're going for actual clears and hi-scores with all the practice required. Pretty much all D-Pads feel like ass to play with given long enough, but so far for me stick holds good all the way through. That's my main motivation for switching right now. It's just slow because shmups with stick to me currently feel really weird and imprecise.
Also how the fuck did a shmup thread get to bump limit on Yea Forums? This is nuts.
I see way more people bitching about those communities than I see anyone from those communities being faggots. Most fans of either are really welcoming, in fact. Are you just making up reasons to trash on them, user?
Smash TV is some of the best couch co-op fun I've had but the appeal is pretty different from shmups. Nex Machina is apparently really good but my computer is too shitty to run it.
Why would anyone recognize a game as shit and still play it? Are you dumb?
This is only true on Yea Forums really (at least when it comes to shmups, I don't know about fighting games)
How is Game Tengoku? Is it worth 20$ and are all of the DLCs worth buying?
I liked Assault Android Cactus quite a bit. Made me want to play more games like it.
How did it get that reputation? Was it just for the overseas release on Gamecube? I like the game but it's so drastically different and even harder than most shmups that I have no idea how people who aren't fans of the genre would ever care. Not only that, but it's also very heavy on precise movement and exact memorization as opposed to some degree of improv, which makes it even less casual friendly. It's one of those rare cases where I actually doubt the people who gave it that reputation really did play it all that much.
>stop playing singleplayer games because of other people
How to get into shmups?
You have to actually play or know about a game to figure out if it's shit, some scrubs who shit on Ikaruga because they passed the first 2 levels without ever touching scoring can't be taken seriously because they know pretty much nothing about how the game is played at a decent level. It's the same for the defense force where people call it the best game ever without even being able to 1cc easy mode, and certainly not touching the scoring.
play mars matrix
pick a game that looks fun and play it.
go play mars matrix
It's got an interesting gimmick which you can instantly recognise and the puzzle-ish nature is probably more accessible to beginners because they can rely on their smarts instead of relfexes which they don't have yet. Lots of people with casual interest to the genre probably just credit feed for some time, notice that it seems cool and move on. It's just easier to appreciate on a surface level than some Cave game where the cool stuff lies in the scoring mechanics. Non-shmupper just wants a game which fun to play through once (credit feeding or not) and Ikaruga delivers that.
Btw I'm not trying to say that Ikaruga is a bad game or anything if it sounds like that
1. look up what bullet streaming/herding is
2. practice
3. practice more
is mars matrix unironically good?
If you're not a complete shut in with no friends then the best way is to start a little scoring competition with a friend. Pick up a game neither of you know and see who can get the better score over the period of a couple of weeks or a month. Bonus points if you put money on it. The games are at their most fun when you're doing friendly competition.
Otherwise you just have to play them and limit your credits/set goals for yourself. The games will click.
If you have a decent cellphone, try Bullet Hell Monday. It's free, ads are nearly non-existent (You have to opt in to them), and has a campaign that's literally an extended tutorial on how SHMUPs work and how to play them. You play a series of focused levels, from which you gain cash so you can slowly upgrade your ship. After beating all the "tutorial" stages, the game kicks in to high gear with the Endless and Challenge modes. Good stuff.
>can 1CC both Mushi games, Radiant, Soukyu, Esp., Rayforce/Storm, etc.
>can't fucking clear Ikaruga and get completely destroyed in stage 4
Why is it so hard bros I want to be good at it
Mars Matrix is awesome.
I know this is an old reply.
Best shump ost of all time imo

Yeah, It has something most doujin shmups lack:
FREEDOM
Samidare by ReBrank ie good. The shield powers up your shots when it absorbs bullets
You 1cc'd the Ray games and still find Ikaruga normal mode hard? Sounds like bullshit to me. Unless you're playing for score.
Why didn't you play her game?
Aiming for scoring while not being able to pull off a 1cc does not sound like a good idea desu.
Yes playing for score obviously, what's the point otherwise?
>This is nuts.
And with remarkably low shitposting to boot. The planets must have aligned somehow.
>writing shmups in capital letters
how to spot the retard
Why?
I have her game already I'm just busy put some clothes on AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Everyone has already probably played it, time will tell how much lasting impact it will have
wait a sec
they did it with a CPS-2?
man the graphics on that game are quite something, expecially those spinning cubes
Thoughts on Blast Wind?
