He doesn't. His human form is something he created using reality manipulation of the Gate. Not a form that was created by being reformated into a Blade. It might have been the form he was given in the virtual environment though.

Still, he gets away with not needing a core because the form he is using is just a projection, rather then his actual self. His core crystal is probably somewhere else entirely and we will probably only get to see it if he shows up in XC3.

It was the first thing in the game to remind me that I had an option to turn off enemy aggro. I tried not being a pussy about it but some of the quest drivers were in awful places surrounded by the fuckers. As I'm finishing up Blqde quests I'm noticing most of them dont have the issue of chapter 10 baddies wandering around the quest areas, so its weird that this one had that.

Yeah its locked behind the DLC. I didn't have the DLC when I was first in post game and I had a quest in that factory area and saw all the level 95+ enemies. My party was able to take them at the time thankfully, but it still meant a lot of meaningless longish battles since I was pretty fresh into late game at the time.

Then I grabbed the DLC before starting NG+ and one of the rewards I claimed was "additional settings in the settings menu" which included turning off aggression and some other QoL things. BoC and custom difficulties were also locked behind the DLC which sucked because I probably would have had fun playing through on BoC difficulty my first time through.

I turned on BoC in the middle of the Boreas quest and got my shit pushed almost right away in by the Ansels or whatever the birds were in Leftheria. Let me know I was not prepared even a little bit for it, though I imagine if I was dealing with that from the start of the game things might have been different. I do remember looking for a hard mode when I started the game so I do feel you there.

Blade swtich is 100% needed if you want to have a good time. If you don't, you'll be sitting around a lot doing nothing for most of the game, until you get Mythra to the point where arts will rechrage on crit.

But Blade combos are going to be the majority of your damage and ignoring switching will limit your options.

Once you unlock the affinity node that lets you combo arts into other arts you can go
art > art > art > blade switch > art > art > art > blade switch > art > art > art > special
Very satisfying. Also, in chapter 4 Rex gets a Blade that can smash. Give him an axe on top of that and you can topple > switch > launch > switch > smash for massive damage, even more if you manage to tell an ally to do a special during this combo.

Switching helps a lot, especially stringing elemental combos for massive damage. I'm ayong for the first time around the end of Chap 3 and I've been using Pyra+Perceval for Rex, easy topple, and Dromarch+Nim for Nia. Got them both recently and Nia's healing is through the fucking roof.

Don't have a Switch just yet. I'm waiting until the end of the year to see whether or not Nintendo will release a new and better version of the Switch. Only then will I get one. The last thing I want to do is buy a Switch and then find out 3-4 months later that they're releasing an improved version (like the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X).

The game is terrible at easing in new players. It was my first proper RPG, and even with the tutorials, I was lost. Not your fault that you needed to look stuff up.

I just went through all of vanilla FFXIV so I am quite sure I can get through any boring game at this point.

I think I might have just played it too late in the day. For a while I believed all you had to do was spam either shoulder buttons to trigger combos, I didn't realise you had to wait till the button icon came up, not the combo icon. It'd have helped if you could review tutorials instead of a one time thing.

If you want somewhat of a challenge you need to replace all your chips with shitty ones, wear shitty gear, and reset back to level one in an inn. You're still going to have an easy time because you have full affinity charts, but it won't be completely ridiculous.

No, you still have to proceed like you did normally and bosses are the same, so it's better to just progress with your end game stats until you fight malos in the hanger then do NG+ shit

Oh is it the first common blade you get from the core crystal tutorial? No you can't. Its there so you always have a blade available for sequences when Mythra and Pyra aren't in your party

So which blades did you get early on, in your first playthrough? How did it go?

Electra was my first rare, and she was disappointingly useless. I knew about her already, and I was thrilled to see her pop up. Sucks.

I got Dahlia super early too. On Rex though, so she went unused for most of the game. Kinda regret it now, I should have at least tried her on Rex, but someone told me that Bitballs can't heal properly with arts unless you put them on Nia.

My usual setup was Mythra, Agate/Gorg, Roc, and Dromarch, Boreas, Sheba. I stuck to a driver combo setup on Rex, and sometimes played healer Nia. Sheba's cannon style took some getting used to, but it was pretty fun. I had KOS-MOS on Nia for the longest time because I was so used to it.

Gotta say though, Boreas is fucking incredible. Singlehandedly carried my team through most of the game.

I got KOS-MOS pretty early on as well but saved using her for when I was in a pinch because she was busted.

I remember my core team being Adenine/Zenobia, Myhtra and Blade Nia. I really liked Mythra's instant art recharge on crit and spamming her moves since I boosted her crit rate to the max became my favorite thing to do.

My first rare was Adenine on Nia and I pretty much kept them together the whole way through the story. Truth be told I was never really all that good at the game until the final chapter so I doubt that was optimal. Nowadays I usually have Rex use Mythra/Shulk/Elma, Nia with Fiora and various supports, and I control Morag with Corvin/Brigid/Agaeon. I kind of hate how many light blades ended up being the best when the battle systems whole point is to keep swapping blades around to put enough orbs on enemies to fuck them up in one massive attack. Also just as someone who likes Pyra more it sucks she's a lot worse in gameplay than Mythra.

The Low Orbit Station is a kino area that I wish had more to it but understand why it doesnt.

the banners with the tree from the Elysium memory right outside the door was some cheeky shit. There was already a hard foreshadow of Elysium being at the very least not what Rex wants in a chapter 8 World Tree H2H, but sticking those pictures right there was just mean.

Pyra on the same tier as Mythra? Can someone explain her optional you setup?

While the game had a ton of content I think the later areas suffered due to a lot of Monolith Soft's devs being poached by Nintendo to help with BoTW. I don't think the game was lacking in anyway shape or form but I do think some areas suffered as a result. I think Tantal was also underutilized as an area.

Pyra has a gimmick where fusion combos and 1 orb chain attacks do a crapton of damage if you spec her correctly. It also helps that you get access to Mythra if you run her and vice versa.

Percival was my first rare blade but he popped up on Nia so he went pretty unused, at least properly. Floren, Nim and Azami were my next ones, so having nothing but Earth and Dark for a while just kinda sucked, but Wulfric was pretty good in terms of damage so it was nice they gave him for free.

If you have difficulty options, try custom. Set the sliders to your liking, should let you find a good level of challenge without having to gimp yourself.

What makes the game a joke is less of your items and more of the blade chips that carry over from your previous save. Using level appropriate chips helps alleviate that while still giving you access to most of your previous spec/playstyle unless it relied heavily on the stats/bonus effects the chips gave.

Fusion combos are any combo in which the enemy has an element from a blade special that you combo with any driver combo that's not break. And yes the announcer does say something along the lines of RISING HEAT TOPPLE whenever you do it correcty.

Don't feel too embarrassed because the game does a poor job of explaining it and I find that the majority of the people who say the combat is boring don't know how to do the fusion combo/driver combos properly.

Yeah, it's when you start, continue, or finish a blade combo with a certain driver combo status with appropriate element, and you can probably find a list of fusion combos somewhere.

Percival was my first one and he fucking carried my ass especially with his passive that gave damage for days when killing enemies in big crowds. Plus, he's super cool. Got Boreas and Vess on Nia and that was all I ever gave her. The game was a fun ride from there.

Herald and Nim should switch places. Ferret girl is relevant for so many challenge missions, but zappy robot girl is only good for chain attacks, which aren't nearly as useful in challenge mode.

Herald is the best at one specific thing, and shit at everything else. She's hopelessly outclassed by KOS-MOS, and I have no idea why she's not placed a rank lower.

I wouldn't say it would be a shame not to know even after beating the game because the game never does push you that far due to it's lack of difficulty but yes and it's a very strong mechanic because just look at those fusion combo aux core damage boosts.

Obligatory pastatips for newfriends we should update it, I think :

-Screencap tutorials because there isn't a reasonable way to view them again.
-Rex automatically gets fantastic blades so you don't need to give him much Blades from the gacha (but give him 2 or 3 good Blades)
-Use Pouch Items as much as possible, especially the ones that lets you recharge your Arts faster. Makes the flow of the battle better.
-On skill trees, you will see an ability unlock "Cancel a driver art with another driver art". It's imperative that you unlock this ASAP because it boosts the flow of battle tremendously.
-Also get the 3 skills that lets you start a battle with the Art already charged on the X, Y and B buttons
-Understand the Attack Cancelling mechanic, as it makes the flow of the battle better by recharging Arts quickly
-Swapping blades refills their arts palette.
-You can combo into and out of swapping blades.
-Most enemies will aggro you if you aren't 8 levels above them. And look at your environment before taking a step in the wild, or you could get your ass raped by a Gorilla 80 levels over you. But the game don't punish you for exploring, so don't be afraid to do it.
-Don't use too much bonus XP at inns unless you really need to because it can completely trivialize the game.
-Focus on the Driver Combo of Break > Topple > Launch > Smash when they will be introduced. The sooner you can understand this set up, the better.
-You can raise trust between a Driver and their Blade by repeatedly using pouch items over and over again. It costs money, but later in the game money is a non-issue.
-Raising trust with your Blade is needed to unlock the Blade's skill tree in most cases.
-Don't waste protocol overdrives. Especially on common blades. The game only gives you a few.
-DON'T kill the little Arduran in Torigoth until you feed it to Lv.99. He'll become the best Legendary Cores farming spot.

The best advice which you mentioned is not giving Rex any blades outside of a few decent ones. You'll realize why later on. On the brightside with rex you have access to a pretty easy driver combo setup if you bring Tora and Nia into your party and Morag Tora later on

It was already in the base game if I remember right, but it's not for *any* common blades, only for 4 stars "common" Blades. Which are rarer than Rare Blades.

How did they get away with these designs?

Where's the common blade ranking? They're certainly better than B and arguably better than A.

A fusion combo is when you have any part of break > topple > launch > smash and a blade combo (e.g. heat > burnout > mega explosion/fire >fire > fire) running at the same time.

The levels will stack on top of each other and give you boosts to damage or timing windows.

As an example, if you use break then a special, the special will stack onto the break as a basic fusion combo. It provides a teamwide damage boost until the break runs out.

What do you do with them? Well, you can stack specials onto breaks to give your team huge damage boosts. You can spam driver combos (break etc.) when you have a blade combo running, and you'll get more time before the window for the next special runs out.

The copy pasta is absolutely required as the game is retardly slow unless you stumbled upon the tricks to make it really fast and it turns a lot of people off from playing it altogether.

By saying they wouldn't help Aonuma finish BoTW in time unless they could be included. I really liked how they got a bunch of different artists to come up with their own blade designs and they incorporated all of them asis

Driver combos are great for getting items. They progress by doing attacks that inflict the status break/topple/launch/smash in that order.
Nia starts with the ability to break and Rex starts with the ability to inflict topple. Rex also gains a blade that has smash early on. The AI is really dumb so the best early-game way to get the combo is to give Rex's final blade slot a blade that can launch (basically-an axe user)
Feel free to use a common. This combo is much more useful than just adding some random rare blade as it gets you tons of great items and shits damage, making normal battles go by really fast.

I wish I was warned about this going into the game so I'll impart this onto you. Chapter 4 is one of the worst experiences in a jrpg i've ever had, specifically the first half of it but even then the chapter on the whole is pretty bad until the literal end of it. Thats the low point of the game, grit your teeth and get through that so you can actually get to parts you might give more of a shit about.

Some DLC blades are unlocked pretty close to the start but a lot of other ones require progress through the game. You really don't need to use DLC blades to complete the game and some gatcha blades are so incredibly strong that they make the game too easy like KOS-MOS.

The only ones worth watching are the Etika compilations and some parts from Skye Bennett's (voice of Pyra/Mythra). Namely the end. I completed this a couple weeks back and I was surprised that I actually ended up liking most of its designs throughout the story. Rex, Pyra and Mythra give it a mediocre/bad first impression, but I warmed up to them fast enough anyway.

What really surprised me though were the mecha and architecture. Wasn’t expecting such gorgeous machines and structures at all.

Thats why I said until the end. Thinking about it though, the entire ending sequence is pretty long. I enjoyed Rosa's theme a whole lot just not the part of the fight where Tora's gone but getting through the whole dungeon to get to that point felt like more of a chore than anything.

Chapter 4 is probably the hardest chapter. Mor Ardain and the factory require some brain power to navigate, and you have to make the incredibly difficult decision to equip a tank on Rex when your tank leaves the party. People don't like it when games make them feel dumb.

I had more trouble with that facility that lead to Chansagh Wastes than anything the factory threw at me, mostly because I was dumb, saw a big lv35 spider with some level 80 snakes by the exit and thought 'thats the fuckin wrong way to go' so I ended up getting myself lost in that stupid shit for far longer than I care to admit. Luckily I was doing that while the merc mission for the story was out doing its thing so it saved me a bit of time as I only explored it by accident. The factory itself was just tedious because the Tirkins are almost never a threat, but you have to fight them off all the fucking time do get anything done.

I had more trouble with the three Tirkins and their meddling Bunnit on the Work Observation Tower than I did with any actual boss fight in the game or most of the unique monsters.

I went to the factory through the scaffolding area and when I saw the spider nest and they started to hatch I noped the fuck out and started sprinting to the factory. Thank fuck that the Zeke fight was easy because I would have been pissed if the checkpoint spawned me at the top of the scaffolds.

Couple questions about NG+ in regards to some blades.
Can you swap Pyra/Mythra out of Rex's lineup, and can you do that with MC blades in general? Will Ursula's stamp collection carry over if I'm not finished that monotonous bullshit? Do the Blade quests open up again despite the affinity chart having them complete, and if so as an extension to that, would you need to do Dagas' quest again to unlock his real chart?

Once you enter NG+, all the protag blades become unlocked for swapping out. If you're halfway through Ursula's quest, finish it now, that shit gets reset. Once you've unlocked Dagas' true chart, it should stay as is in NG+.

I've never usued Ursula, why is her quest difficult?

You have to send her on a gazillion merc missions.

Its not that its difficult, its just gated by time consumption. How her affinity chart levels up is you need to improve her popularity or something, and how you do that is through helping her improve in 3 categories that each have their own merc missions attached. The missions themselves take 10 minutes or less depending on optimization, and the reward is 1 stamp (later 2) in that category. From what I hear, to max her affinity chart, you need to get 99 of each stamp, and apparently NG+ resets your stamps so you cant half ass it on your first run and then go into NG+ to finish, otherwise its just wasted time

I can't believe they never made an update so that merc missions continue to make progress even when you're not playing.

Its not like that would make a difference for Ursula, you could send her off, go take a quick piss and it'd be half done. I do agree with you though in regards to longer missions, feels like a no-brainer

QoL stuff really should have gotten an extra patch.

Still waiting on the Torna QoL in the main game, Monolith
