I know this is kind of weird, but they have more of a mother son relationship. Consider that Saria is an ageless forest spirit while Link is a normal "human". She probably raised him since he was a baby, their farewell in the bridge is Link leaving his childhood home the same way Toon Link leaves his grandma in Wind Waker.

the deep lore is that link got lost in the forest one day searching for navii. Obviously this didn't happen directly after the events of MM (since the skeleton iin TP is an adult) but at some later point.
Link probably became some mad man spending all his time in the milk bar rambling on about how he saved Hyrule. with the bar tender just giving him nods.

The Hero's Shade is Link's ghost. He lived a full life on the Child Timeline. Link never got lost in the Lost Woods. He didn't become a Stalfos. You can even see what Stalfos look like in TP, and the Hero's Shade is markedly different from them, including having actual flesh.
