The last one (Rise) sucked, in terms of gameplay. Seriously you could max out the difficulty and swear it was bugged to be on easy mode. It was a fundamental problem with all facets of the game.
The newer one (Shadow) dramatically increased the difficulty. You can seperately adjust the difficulty for exploration, combat and puzzles. However, there are still far too few combat sections. It's like they took the rambo memes of the 2013 Tomb Raider too seriously. There's only 10 or so sections in the game where you need to fight.
Story wise, it is average. The first game is still better in making you fascinated about the place you were in and what you are going through. Lara is more assertive and less of a head bobbing retard than she was in Rise, which is good. There's one part where the main villain is talking about protecting his world and Lara just snaps at him with "What about my world?". It's such a wonderfully selfish, flawed thing for Lara to say and it makes her more endearing. Nu Lara is the least Mary Sueish of all modern female protagonists, hands down.

I finished it on hard and really only had hiccups with a few of the stealth sections, because you have to keep moving ad I'm fucking awful at doing fast stealth. And even on hard you can just kite enemies into the bushes or wall where your hiding and build a pile of corpses, or use hit and run tactics really effectively. I don't know how puzzles got harder besides Lara not narrating the next clue like she did in Rise, but I only struggled with the puzzle that had you check a photograph for a clue (reminiscent of the claw puzzles in Skyrim, where there's a useless feature that you never need to use except in one circumstance, which also had me exploring the entire dungeon over and over to figure out what I missed)

I genuinely think the nu games are better than almost all AAA titles. I even went around re-exploring maps in Rise and I'll probably start NG+ of Shadow in the coming weeks. They're better than Ass Creed, the Middle Earth games, etc in terms of semi-open world design, exolorable areas and even just control smoothness and intuition. They rival Arkham Asylum and City (I haven't played Knight) in their overall polish and execution imo
