What ever happened to skateboarding games? It seems like they just suddenly stopped being made in the mid 2000s for some reason.
What the fuck happened to Tony Hawk and skateboarding games?
Extreme sports became less popular and more of a niche
is it true he had to learn how to skateboard after they made a game about him skateboarding?
In 2006, Activision acquired the Guitar Hero series from Harmonix Music Systems, as well as RedOctane, and chose Neversoft as the developer. Neversoft developed several games in the franchise, breaking several records with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock until 2010
ran out of ideas, also the entire gaming industry forgot how to make physics fun
skate came out and BTFO of tony hawk
Skating got out of the zeitgeist
wtf happened to rodney mullen? Did he contract autism? youtube.com
No. He pulled the 900 before the first THPS came out.
He got old like everyone else. When was the last time you saw Bob Burnquist or Kareem Campbell?
>tony started skating in the 80s
>crowned GOAT in the mid 90s
>Pulled the 900 in the 99 X Games
>THPS 1 came out a month later
Zoomers pls leave
Same thing that happened to Guitar Hero. Activision ran it into the fucking ground.
>Falling for big this weak
Jesus Christ you fucking newfags go back to 9gag
so here I am
PRETENDING IM A SUPER MAN
Does anyone have the Tony Hawk timeline?
More like Boney Cock Pro Gayter 4
I think Burnquist was competing up until a year or two ago. Honestly seems like a chill dude.
36 y-o boomer here
Skateboarding started to get extremely popular in the early/mid 90s and probably peaked in 2001 or so. After that it slowly but steadily declined in popularity
I'm pretty sure zoomers would rather just play video games at this point
he started out with autism
if we are being honest with ourselves, pro skater 3 was the last great tony hawk game. after that, they fell for the open world meme and tried pandering to jackass fans
Activision is a strictly fad-based company
Tony Hawk 1997-2006
Guitar Hero 2005-2010
COD 2007-???
Tony Hawk genuinely BTFO it's whole genre when it game out, it's pretty bizarre going back to something like Cool Boarders and your guy handles like a sack full of bricks
skateboarding isn't just dead in video games, it's also pretty much dead in real life too. Only in certain parts of California is where this shit still has some life left.
he made his last real edit a few weeks ago I want to say? (maybe longer). dudes done with skating outside of having fun. At least he got out of the game alright. Dave Mirra killed himself when he found out he had CTE, leaving behind a wife and kids. Hoffman can barely move.
on the upside the alt sports scene is really chill now. most of you posers quit in the late 00's so now it's just real niggas
it became a cashgrab franchise that they used to shit out shovelwear becaise any dumb kid would buy it
Skateboard culture was popular in the early 90's and peaked 1998-2003
The Zoomer era began around 2005-2007 and killed a lot of things, including the skateboard craze
>Fad
>COD has been popular for 12 years
Idiot.
Untrue. Skateboarding has only grown. It's now an international sport that people in most countries know about.
Have you played THPS 5? That's what happened.
I'm a sk8er boy
ITT: we pretend that skate doesnt exist
That popularity has died significantly in the last several years.
Fads come and go.
only homeless people and 30 year old boomers skateboard in 2019
Skateboarding nowadays is absolutely fucked with what people are doing.
Pretty sure zoomers don't like skateboarding considering how much time you need to put in in order to gitgud. I remember it took me months to actually learn how to do a hollie
Oversaturation of games, and some straight up terrible ones like Ride.
Pro Skater 5 and HD doing things like have the day-one patch be bigger than the actual game helped finish it off.
People that thought skateboarding and skateboarders were cool got old, degrees and jobs.
Nowadays kids would rather stay indoors and play videogames.
They released a new tony hawk game for mobile
retards
Sales literally peaked with MW3 retard, it was absolutely a fad
But I'm 23 and skate regularly. It's a good workout and fun with my bros. We don't even live in California.
>Is actually a mensa level high IQ genius
>Picked up skateboarding because it's secretly the most high IQ sport
>Got super famous because he meticulously calculated how to pull a 900 using the power of math and physics
>Spawned a super popular franchise of skateboarding games
>Got fucked over by activision and now his games are shit
>Now he's old as fuck and can barely skateboard anymore
>Now nobody will remember who he even was
i liked being able to fuck around in open levels indefinitely. maybe if i were older at the time and could be more tactful about objectives i would have felt differently. but the jackass shit was pretty crappy
The internet happened.
Instead of skating, kids just sit on the internet all day.
pretty much. South Americans are real with shit, great styles, amazing skate spots, great people. Russians are hardcore as fuck and treat everything like skiing, Taiwan, Japan and Korea have a lot of really cool indoor parks and house skate parks. Australians are rollerbladers and scooters. Canadians are doing a lot with street skiing and rollerblading. There is actually a helluva lot going in those sports. scenes just smaller now, more people know each other so you can travel easier. I like that a lot.
>COD has been popular for 12 years
It isn't anymore
>feeling sorry for the most famous and richest skateboarder
His autistic hyper-focus is the whole reason he was able to develop so much of skating as we know it.
here we go with this meme, go and look at the sales charts and say that again
stupid argument since you have been playing a sport videogame from day 1
He unironically remains a more household name
>Anyone in tennis
>Anyone in golf
>Anyone in bowling
>Anyone in non-NASCAR motorsports
No he's not Tom Brady but he had a decent run
This list isn't even accurate. Blops 4 sold 17m in its first week user.
Kids stopped liking skateboards and started liking Call of Duty.
... Does that mean we'll get a game about being a target member of Call of Duty's purchasing audience? Press X to unironically enjoy cinematic takedown.
>Australians are rollerbladers and scooters.
Heh.
And then it also died.
>used to be able to skate anywhere
>security got on the ass of kids skateboarding because they were a liability if they get hurt
>can only skateboard in a park, most kids are like 12 when they start so they have to be driven there
this, the guy is also a math genius and the living proof you can be autistic and rad at the same time.
Why did I write golf. Obviously Woods/Mickelson/Palmer are bigger than Tony Hawk. Ignore me i'm retarded
Why do people feel bad for millionaire famous people losing relevancy?
>Dave Mirra
thought he just had depression?
no shit the genre turned to shit and only skate bothered to do an actual good game
>A lot of these guys had been skating since the 70's
>Most of them were in their 30's and 40's when THPS came out
Holy shit I thought most pro skaters were in their 20's or something.
Downhill Jam is still a funny title since that was around the time people stopped caring
Video games aren't the internet, genius.
He is absolutely not a more household name than tiger Woods or even the Williams sisters.
That just so thoroughly has nothing to do with anything I'm going to call you a retard and move on. There's no way it eventually sold 30 million, assuming it's even true
Who else played this? I though it was pretty good (though not as good as Tony obviously)
yeah, pretty much. great bros. down to rage and then get up early morning and shred despite the hangover. A bit rude but I like how they talk shit to each other.
>probably made as money from vidya royalties as comps and endorsements
Worldwide he is, nobody cares for Golf or Tennis in 3rd world countries, but everyone played Tony Hawk
anti skateboarding architecture really took off and now there's nowhere to grind
>can barely skateboard
He landed a 900 a couple years ago. He still does shit like mctwists on the regular. People will remember him as long as skateboarding is remembered. He's still incredibly famous within that niche community.
Woods yes but Williams sisters are probably really close
>youtu.be
What a sweet boy
Neversoft shut down.
Also popular interest in skateboarding as a whole died around that time.
yes, most pros aee in their 20 and 30's. Top skaters rotate out of the scene every 5 to 7 years. Really good dudes can remain relevant about a decade. 40's and 50's guys just kinda do their own thing and are sorta like the tribes chief. they have money and time to build shit and spend money on putting on competitions and events.
It's still very good, but fills a strange spot somewhere between an arcadey video game like THPS, and a more simulator focused game like Skate.
But the neet ironic vaporwave PoMo humor has intersected with skateboarding. You can still skate and have contemporary ironic cries for help in a corporate nightmare.
youtube.com
I'm not the guy you were originally talking to, but Blops 4 sold 17m in its first 8 days. I'm just pointing out the chart isn't accurate. It stalled at a billion$ and some change, but it's over 20m units. Don't use shitty data next time I guess.
nah, git gud
Oh so this guy's like the Pewdiepie of IRL sports. Got it.
I'm here to tell you a random gaming article somewhere about first-week sales dosen't invalidate the fact COD has declined in popularity.
Don't have a mom who drank pregnant I guess
skateboarding was for boomers born in the 70s and 80s. no one cares anymore
Basically this. You gotta either bust the skate-stoppers or git gud.
Finding spots in my town is a pain in the ass though, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
On the other hand Skateboarding was placed on some sort of 'dangerous activities' list in the US which means that anyone choosing to skate is doing so with the consent and knowledge of taking a risk which means that public skateparks are opening up leading to a regrowth in transition skating.
skateboarding and xtreme sports were a retarded fad meant to cull the retarded masses
The only kid I knew who was remotely good at skating died Xanax, most thrillseekers just do drugs these days
It’s not cool for kids to be a poser skateboarder anymore so most of the players no longer have interest on the games.
I go to clubs to grind now
Black Ops 4 was the highest selling game this year.
Last year it was COD: WW2.
>"Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launch month dollar sales represent the eighth highest in videogame history since The NPD Group began tracking in 1995," the NPD said. "Black Ops 4 instantly becomes the best-selling game of the year, and the second best-selling game across the past twelve month period, trailing only Call of Duty: WWII."
It broke a ton of records.
This is like saying Bing-Bing Wahoo is a fad because Odyssey only sold 15m.
Nyjah Huston one of skateboardings biggest names is dating a girl I went to high school with. It stings a lil because she used to complain about coming to skateparks with my bros all the time.
yup, or you just fuck around, do fancylads shit. Build dumb contraptions to skate. fucking off and running around with your friends like you are still 8 years old. You don't have to skate fucking 15 stair drop rails to have a good time
don't feel bad, dude basically got raised on an island and forced by his father to learn tricks like he was a goddamn samurai or something. his childhood was shit, unlike yours.
This was the best. Realistic tricks and imo best soundtrack ever. It was so comfy to kickflip down the stairs etc.
Skate 3 was 9 years ago
>>Got fucked over by activision and now his games are shit
he had some fault on this, he was offered first the whole skating games first but he didnt want the attention from it.
Hopefully Session or Skater XL will turn out to not be shit.
>tfw trying to get funny ragdolls
>running from cops
>hearing early 80s hip hop
This was an odd but fun game. Some of the earliest ragdolls, too.
Wait, there are people on this board that think COD BRO Ops wasn't a fad? and it isn't getting significantly lower numbers than it did, at its peak?
It stopped being "cool" a long ass time ago, and noone really gives a shit to play a game about it otherwise.
Other anons in the thread talk about how "popular" it's gotten, but what they're leaving out is that it's in the same breath and tier as curling.
>Skate 3 bombed at launch mostly because it was a rehash of 2 but not as good
>Ends up selling well over time thanks to YT meme channels
>EA still won't make a sequel despite a bigger demand for it
Fucking EA
That was my first game. Bought it at my skateshop along with first CKY. Still remember the owner being like "don't tell your parents I sold you this shit."
nah, you can actually
make money in skating. I know this cause I go to woodward every couple months and I see a lot of wealthy bikers and rollerbladers. Not sure if I'd directly attribute that success to skating itself. It's more like a good ol boys club where you network and make connections because you all engage in the same risky behavior.
>why?
that fucking killed me, holy shit
These guys pretty much started the whole thing
>Fancylad
My nigga
Skate 3 was popular 4 years ago, just for other reasons
What did she mean by this even
Anyone ever play evolution skateboarding?
skateboarding isn't "cool" anymore. it's dead.
This isn't even remotely true. Try going outside more often. Everyone's still trying to get in on skate brands.
How many normies do you see with Thrasher t-shirts and hoodies? Normies keep getting Vans checkerboard slip-ons, as always, for their biz-cas workplace, to be "The Cool Manager."
Skating had a boom period in the 90s and it died out in the mid 2000s. Not hard to figure out retard
its becoming a thing on other countries that had not adopted the retarded Anti-skate architecture.
Haven't seen a skateboard in quite some time now.
Except my fish board.
skate brands are still "cool" brands but if you actually skate your in the niche now rather than when most people were "trying" to skate
Skateboarding is out of the public eye now.
The scene is larger than ever, but there's not as much exposure now as in the 90s when media companies were pushing extreme sports.
I remember the Xgames used to be all over kids tv programming, but now it's been relegated to the ocho or some shit.
I have no clue, but thats why its so hysterical to me.
Like imagine a super serious woman asking TH why he exists. Not the reason for his conception, but his whole being
What about Instagram, skating's all over instagram, it's where everyone posts their clips nowadays.
Absolutely is bigger than them. More people by far have heard of Tony Hawk. They may know fuck all about him but his name is bigger than most sports personalities for sure.
Skateboarding game with anime girls when?
it's nice, I really hated that "oh yeah I skate bro" shit. You'd invite the fucker to your session, go to the park or whatever and niggers can barely cruise. Having trouble with basic flip tricks, grinds and stalls. Look like a wacky-inflatable-tubeman. When things took a dive in 2010 from the mainstream I was so happy. It trimmed the fat. In gamer terms it would be like purging sjws/incels or whatever your most hated group is.
nice
SHould have made Tony hawk games into a Battle Royal. That is literally all FPS are doing to stay relevant.
classy
>99 people grinding on a shrinking rail
id watch a skateboard samurai movie
He was genuinely the godfather of skateboarding. One of those people that truly defined an entire generation, though skateboarders are still gay.
This would honestly be pretty cool. Too bad robomoto is filled with actual retards and no on else can even make a Tony hawk game.
wow
t. rollerblader
that fatass from superbad (can't remember his name) made a film recently. It was trying to capture that gutterpunk/skate life lifestyle but it ended up being more normie culture shit. you might like it though
>Used to be able to skate fairly well as a teen
>Now in my 20's
>Friend finds his old board at his parents house
>We both try it out and end up eating shit
>Back aches for a week after a particularly bad spill
>TFW this is aging
not user but I rollerblade. I don't have any problems with skateboarders whatsoever. It's really only old people that freak out about that shit and even then it depends on the scene.
takes a dozen sessions to get it back, I see people like tou occasionally.
That whole 00-04 feel died out with the advent of the Internet and other things. The culture of punk bands, jackass, playing splitscreen with your friend, x games, mtv, the end of classic America after 9/11, I'm sure someone else can follow on with some more examples in this vein
At what point do you buy new wheels?
Lmao gottem *dabs*
>What ever happened to skateboarding games? It seems like they just suddenly stopped being made in the mid 2000s for some reason.
Yes, bad devs happened. No, seriously. Basically what happened was the skate games really boomed in popularity, and so then they tried to turn it in to an annual cashgrab deal with limited dev budgets and instead of getting more smash hits, they made flop after flop. And then one of the last skateboarding games was gearing up for an AO rating and the company lost it's shit and demanded censorship, which resulted in a fucking botched abomination that made no sense.
Oh, and the skateboard controller. That was a fucking mistake.
Tony Hawk eventually forgot what made it so great chasing after the open world meme and all those weird spinoffs.
When you feel like it, it's import to get fresh wheels often. Remember the basic rule though.
wheels > bearings
don't need to spend that much.
fortnite is bringing it back, don't worry
Nowadays all the cool kids are becoming stuff like trannies and two-spirit.
It was actually the physics of the game that made it extremely fun.
coke and EA
I wish they'd port THUG 1&2 to Ps4 or PC; hell, I'd even buy a switch if they found their way there. I guess THUGPRO is all we got.
Fucking proper Nollie Heelflip right there.
If you were good at skateboarding, you'd know what it takes to warm up.
20's is not that old bruh. Skateboarding is mental more than physical. You gotta restore that muscle memory by warming back up. This takes days. If you were good at skateboarding, you'd know this, so I'll assume you did, and didn't just pull a crusty board out of your friend's garage and thought you would be just as good instantly.
The fad was the success of black hawk down and growing popularity of realistic modern military shit
I know, I was just goofin. I also don't have any problem with bladers. Most that I've met seem cool.
godfather of vert*
we can thank natas and mullen for modern street
20's is baby tier, you start complaining about body pain when you hit your mid to upper 30's.
So Yea Forums, what board do you ride?
>Now he's old as fuck and can barely skateboard anymore
don't worry he's fine
youtube.com
>20
>already complaining about aging
bruh
i have a shop blank deck rn because it was cheap with some indy stage 11's and autobahn 90a wheels with reds bearings. i also have an older enjoi setup but the pop is so gone on it, i just keep it around to let my nephew ride when he's over
After skating 7.75 my entire life I bought an 8.
I wear a size 12 shoe so i dont know why i didnt make the jump sooner.
