Post your favorite vidya from each respective console generation.
For PC releases, classify them by if a new generation has started in the consoleverse. So for example the Wii U started gen 8. If the PC game in question came out after the Wii U launch date, then it is a gen 8 game. However an X360 game that released after the Wii U is still gen 7.

not bad OP
Surprised Sonic Mania isn't your gen 8 choice but then again Celeste probably is better.
I'm pissed that the Meat Boy sequel is just a runner game.
Give me a few minutes I'll make mine.
OP I'll give you an 8/10
here's mine
fact: we have not experienced a dark age as far as quality titles being consistantly released in our lifetime. The industry has been pretty decent since the crash.
the second half of gen 7 and the first half of gen 8 was kind of weak but you're right it still had great games scattered about.

very good stuff. I still think Meat Boy is a bit overrated but it's a solid platformer still.

Mario 64 and Smash Ultimate are a bit run of the mill but huge props for including meteos.
8/10
SOTN isn't even close to being the best castlevania but I'm assuming it has nostalgic value for you. Skies of Arcadia is also overrated. Otherwise your list is high tier.
8/10
Kojima is a hack. But besides that your list is the best here so far.
Missed opportunity/10
You should have included Ow the Edge and Sonic Forces

Well this is me. I should note I stuck to console releases as much as possible. This was difficult because I dont own any gen 8 consoles.
Not considering PC games because generations are a mess. DMC4SE could be there instead of Bloodborne but it feels a bit weird because the original DMC4 is gen 7... Even if I like it far more than any other game in gen 8 (so far).
Majora's Mask is pretty cool.
Symphony of the Night is pretty good but it's waaaaay too easy.

2D action platformer. Its 'one of those' but its the best one of those. Better than Shovel Knight as far as I'm concerned.
As of gen 8 has the "indie" scene actually passed the AAA scene as far as the overall quality of the best games each has to offer?
Yes.
I might have to play that.
Especially if it has a good difficulty curve.
>As of gen 8 has the "indie" scene actually passed the AAA scene as far as the overall quality of the best games each has to offer?
Yes. AAA garbage is littered with some of the worst business practices we have ever seen. Meanwhile coding practices have become so much easier that many more independent devs can make high end quality Sprite games now. This is the best 2D gaming has been since the SNES/Genesis days.

The only real reason any anons here would dislike celeste is because it's about muh depression which in the age of /pol/chan is a """left wing""" ideal even though the game is not preachy at all about it. The game is top tier.
You complain about resetera but in reality the bigger invasion was r/thedonald
Celeste has some of the best pixelart in a while outside of the character sprites and that's hardly a big deal
personally, i hate celestes pixel art for using too wide of a color palette, so the entire visual style looks off and feels loosely stitched together rather than feeling cohesive, in the way a retro game would actually look
>that's hardly a big deal
Uh huh. Sure.
Also the screen bouncing around all the time is obnoxious and the high-res character portraits and font clash hard with the artstyle
based pikbro
Game was good, story was just a fucking insult, it's like the game spat on people with actual depression or some shit. "muh depression" lol so deep hey conquer the mountain and defeat your evil side with awful dialog, so deep.
But now, explain fucking meat boy, what kind of non-casual non-redditor says that his favorite gen-7 game was fucking meat boy, what a fucking joke, it's even followed by fucking Halo.

I'm sure I'll get some shit for gears 3 but it's one of the best party shooters I've ever played. Horde mode especially ruined COD zombies for me im n how good it is.

wish i could understand the bloodborne hype to any degree, to me it was just a worse version of des and ds1
my only issue with the art style clash is the main map looking kind of dumb in the 3Dness compared to the rest of the game. OST makes up for that for me though.
why dmc1 over 3? i love one but 3 took everything it did and improved upon it
this
In my opinion the RTS genre died with starcraft II and the growth of the moba scene. So for a long time enthusiast like me I had nothing else to do but take the normie pill.
I don't like weebshit.
I'm really torn between breath of the wild and bloodborne, but in the end I think breath of the wild impressed me more because it was "newer" to me. Havn't played many games like it
Halo CE is fine
Halo 3 is the babbies first FPS
I started with Doom and shat on goldeneye when it released.

>why dmc1 over 3? i love one but 3 took everything it did and improved upon it
I liked the music in 1 better, and the world/level design was amazing. Three kind of dropped the ball on the latter. The majority of the game was that tower, and it was kind of boring, a lot of it was even ugly. Three is still a fantastic game though.
you could always explore some eurojank and pole games, theyre still going hard with that sort of thing. plus nobody is making you move forward with games bud, just play what you like, fuck console gen hype cycles
ever played syndicate? you might love it
fair enough, like i said i still love 1. to me, dmc1 was always the true 3d successor to castlevania, with a lot of the level design quirks i loved from re1, i can completely understand loving it, im just more into the indepth combo list from 3. i do wish 3 were as open ended as 1 is though

It was originally released for the Neo Geo and according to the guy that made the image the Neo Geo is gen 4 so... Yeah.

Gen 7 is not fine. And it has nothing to do with normalfags.
The jump to HD simply came at too great a sacrifice to game design. With the jump to 3D you at least had the benefit of an experimental new frontier to soften the blow of the overall competency of the games dropping. Meanwhile the 7th gen was "everything is bigger and pretty and plays worse and more simplistically."
Portal is a legitimately well made game deserving of praise like Kingdom Hearts and Viewtiful Joe. FFX, Halo 3, and Mass Effect fucking blow.
yeah they both emulate seamlessly, i think ogre might stutter a bit on emulator, but if the snes version wont work for you, theres a psp remaster that emulates flawlessly
>gen 3 is better than most
Yeah, I kinda didn't want to put BB there and honestly it wouldn't make into top 50 games ever for me, but I haven't played a lot from last gen, and on top of that I didn't consider PC games. BB will probably get changed when I play DMC5 tho.
Well, the Neo Geo got official releases until 2004. If think it's weird calling those gen 4 games.

I don't understand the appeal of this game outside of nostalgia. The multiplayer this game is often praised for revolutionizing in a console space is horrid by modern standards.
The jump to 3D was more disastrous than the jump to HD.
Gen 5 has aged worse than any other gen. For every OOT there are 2 or 3 superman 64s.
Excellent taste my dude
Goldeneye didn't even revolutionize anything. Halo came out a few years later and made it completely irrelevant.
Yes but the jump to 3D actually justified. The issues in the jump to HD were just driven by retardation.

Honestly, this chart tells more about the Gens themselves than the person.
S3&K is quite possibly the best platformer of all time, even if it isnt the most difficult by a long shot. I'll even admit the SNES was a better console and the sonic series is as a whole actually super terrible but that one game is worth keeping it around for just in case we ever get the chance of a sonic game remotely close to it. Hell, Mania was maybe only a fraction of as magical as S3&K and it was completely worth it.
Well, guess I don't have to post now
I immidiately saw MGS2 and got skeptical because I generally consider that an indicator of someone just trying to be contrarian BUT the rest of your list does kind of check out so I'll give you a pass.

It's alright user, I was only making a light jab at ya.
I just 100%ed Celeste and I completely understand why some people find the story too preachy and in some ways YIKES tier, but for my money the game really shines in its replayability. The B-Sides and C Sides will punish you hard and really make you feel accomplished when you finally beat them. Also, this might be the benchmark for indie music.
It's not my favorite gen 8 game, but I completely why it is getting as much praise as it is.
Holy fuck, have we really reached the point where newer posters don't know much about 3rd generation games? Like people who really don't know much about the NES, Master System, 7800, or mid-80's PC games?

Good list. Have you played Dustforce? You'd definitely like it I'm thinking.
true, thats my mistake. well then replace OoT with AoEII and then put link to the past in for Gen 4
Oh god that was not my point at all, my bad. I fucking hate movie games too, mostly what I meant was that the limits of that era made it incredibly hard to be graphically unique. But even the generic looking ones are better than 60% of a game being cutscenes
>I started with Doom and shat on goldeneye when it released.
Lol what a faggot
I thought this was supposed to be a board for people who like videogames? You would be laughed out of pretty much any hobby if your knowledge was limited to the past 20 years or so. There are tons of important, fun, and well designed 3rd gen games out there. I also think the aesthetics could be quite good, even if they were more limited than they are today. This makes me feel like a lot of people here are only casually interested in games.
my initial pic I made started with gen 3
Feel free to include it
how does dustforce compare to speedrunners?
gen 3 rivals gen 6 as the second best gen after gen 4
its almost like people are in their 20's or something and just listing games they liked over the years of their life.... deep dude
Sure smells pretty casual in here. Its almost as if lots of people here don't really even like videogames, they just like the association some of them have with their childhoods and teenage years.
>>>>mgs4
what happened when you hit gen 7? Did u have a stroke?
just because people arent obsessed with video games doesnt mean they dont like them. you dont have to be one of those fucking neets with a big video game collection and play all the old games that existed before you did to not be casual. casual is just playing Madden once a week and bejeweled on your phone. The list of games being presented here doesnt "smell" of casual just because you are more into the hobby than they are
imagine this:
oh, you like baseball? you watch over 130 games a season? you play baseball too? oh yeah well have you watched over 130 games since the dawn of televised baseball? oh, you only have general knowledge of baseball prior to the 80's? huh well you must be a casual fan then...
>lol i cant decide which games are my favorite i will include them all!!!
Yikes. If you ever want to be a success in life you're really going to have to work on your willpower. Not even being able to make a simple fucking choice like "which game will I choose for this thread that will be gone in a couple of hours". How the FUCK do you expect to ever achieve anything in life.
so, the problem I find is that Yea Forums is filled with a lot of, for lack of a better term, losers who play only a few videogames a year and don't even 100% them at that but at the same time want to be considered the "expert" on vidya.
You're completely correct in that your age does not determine what you have access to playing, especially now when older vidya are more accessible via roms and emulators than ever, but unfortunately very few anons actually venture back before their time.
>Every Nintendo fanboy on Yea Forums suddenly loves Link's Awakening
>but unfortunately very few anons actually venture back before their time.
but i wouuldnt call them casuals if they dont. they might be missing out but if they have played games extensively since their time i wouldnt call them a casual.
anyway, Gen4 is probably before peoples time for a lot of people here. Im in my 20's so Gen 5 was practically in when i was born
It's literally always been my favorite zelda go fuck yourself, it even came out the year I was born.
gen 6 is really, really tough competition and while I'm sure there's great stuff in gen 7 i'm having a had time remembering any of the 10/10s so I just went with something unique that I really liked
gen 8 has some real stiff competition too

No, what's happened is that you weren't thinking about Link's Awakening at all so you didn't notice it but now that it's been thrust into the limelight, you notice it. It's like the retards who say "why is x so popular all the sudden?" when it was around for a while
I just don't get it.
I tried to talk about the older zelda games like link's awakening, and the oracle games as suggestions to anons that "loved" BoTW and they always thought I was just shitposting.
Almost every time it got brought up, they said BoTW was their first zelda game, and that they didn't want to play the older ones because of the graphics.
>Haven't played D5. Does it recapture some of the Magic the series has been missing or is it just good in it's own right?
I would say it is more good on its own right. Definitely doesn't have the same feel as the first game, but all the options and content in it make the game well worth the money. Just do as I did and ditch the main characters + make your own party with generics.
botw is by no means a bad game but I really hope they manage to make it more like a zelda game, and NOT do a complete 180 on some core part of the game like they've done for the past like 6 or so games by now
An excellent question.
I don't get it either. People are acting like just because something is older that means that the game isn't fun or aesthetically pleasing. The original "Legend of Zelda" has a great soundtrack, and crisp, clear visuals with interesting enemy design. It looks good today, even if it is more primitive.
oh and right the other part of the post
i don't really hate st/ph either but the previous games like oracles/minish/la seemed to have a special something that other zelda games didn't, or later handheld ones
albw is fine but I don't really think of it as a handheld one since it's a semi-remake of lttp
