Is it gonna be good?
Shenmue 3
This looks like a Next Generation magazine cover.
Jo
Gameplay Trailer on the 9th btw
For the 3 people still around who played the first two. Everyone else is going to be disappointed at the greatest drawer opening simulator ever.
Edge always has cool covers. Some nice articles too. I always pick up a copy when I go to England
Naw dude
Get ready for it to bomb and the story to never conclude because Yu Suzuki wants to draw out the series
Excuse me, have you seen a tattoo parlor?
Should I play Shenmue 1 and 2 on my Dreamcast or buy it for PS4?
I swear to God if I cannot transfer my gachas or move scrolls ...
If you dont mind tank controls go for DC otherwise go for HD
no because retards on Yea Forums will say how it's a blunder because it didn't sold a million copies or got 90 on metacritic
I wonder if Ryo will travel anywhere other than the Asian countries. Would be neat to see him in an American setting.
>20 years in the making
>"dude average scores are great"
Who's doing the music? I played the series for the first time last year. The soundtracks for the first 2 games were amazing.
remember the basedboys from easy allies getting hyped because of the kickstarter reveal?
remember the retards from reddit asking Sony if they should keep giving them free money like if a corporation would reply "no guys, we are cool, we will fund all of it :)"?
years in the making
More like 5 years. Don't be retarded.
When people say a game aged poorly, they're talking about Shenmue.
Even showcase how retarded you're for believing metacritic scores anyway. Journos are dumb, whether they're praising or shitting a game, and should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't know since when Yea Forumsirgins has taken these scores seriously.
It's going to be crap because it's outdated. The Yakuza series does it all better.
REMEMBER ALL THOSE THINGS YOU HATE FROM MODERN GAMING LIKE CINEMATIC GAMEPLAY AND QTES? WELL NOW YOU CAN PLAY THE GAME THAT STARTED IT ALL
Too bad Yakuza's fighting mechanics suck compared to Shenmue.
Why did old games have such comfy soundtracks?
>Too bad Yakuza's fighting mechanics suck compared to Shenmue.
True but you can always just play virtua fighter.
last one
fuck i really need to play 2, i had a great time with the first one
maximum comfy
thanks op
It's hard to really compare the two games. There's still things that game does better, with Yakuza it's side content and goofy plots, with Shenmue its attention to detail and trying to create a feeling of a virtual world
I paid $300 for the kickstarter. But I know its going to bad.
The art has not changed from 2015.
>with Shenmue its attention to detail and trying to create a feeling of a virtual world
and combat
WHY CAN'T THEY GET RYO'S FACE RIGHT? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
It hasn't changed from 2015 because we haven't seen anything new since 2015.
Also, I think the art looks fine for what it needs to be. I just want a fun, slow burn sandbox environment with a semi-authentic Asiatic feel, lots of characters, cheesy writing, and at least 20 hours of content if I'm taking my time.
Shenmue certainly has better combat than Yakuza's "press triangle when the heat gauge is filled up" combat but its a shame you barely get used to it in the first game even with the training you can do in the parking lot.
I like both but Shenmue is more satisfying for sure.
I massively disagree, i've played Shenmue 1+2, Yakuza 0 and i'm currently playing Kiwami. The combat in Yakuza is vastly better than Shenmue. Shenmue is hey learn all these combos only for boss battles to boil down to inane thinkfast quicktime gotcha events. Also the Smeagol fight in the Arcade is complete aids.
>Shenmue is more satisfying for sure
Yakuza's combat is meatier and you can't seriously think the janky combat in Shenmue is more satisfying than stomping on faces, breaking backs on railings, and breaking items over heads etc.
Yakuza was the natural evolution of the two Shenmue games and there is not fucking way in hell that Shenmue 3 will be better than Yakuza 0
Even if it's amazing, nostalgiafags and other nu will say it's shit
This was addresses in the Q&A and that kickstarter art Ryo face was said to be like a placeholder and they will ensure to get thr face right before launch
I don't fucking understand this either. Just fucking take the original promotional model used for all the posters. Shenhua has an amazing model too.
HOW CAN THEY GET THIS WRONG?
>just find assets from 1999 and take them bruh come on it's that easy definitely works on modern software, surely isn't outdated, definitely isn't lost or deleted
I dont care about gameplay or even if the game has combat. All I care about is if the game is aa aesthetically pleasing as the first 2 games in both looks and music. But it looks like shit. I hate Unreal Engine and people who don't care for optics. So many Japanese devs are taking the Unreal Engine Jew and making shit like Shonen Jump.
They'll fix it. They never actually expected the kickstarter to so well or to get funding by sony so they throigh together a rough model. Go look at the dev cycle vlogs on youtube. It's also interesting seeing them use an old dreamcast dev kit and controller
>go to sega
>hey can we get those old promotional models from your archives?
>sure, they're in an old format though so you might need to convert them
>convert
>update rigs, shift polycounts and adapt textures to modern engines
There. Could take less than a week for an inexperienced modeler, probably a day or two for an experienced one new with converting models.
Just played the first and loved it, going to play 2 sometime this year.
Even Yakuza can't top Yakuza 0.
When you gitgud at Shenmue it's better and more rewarding than Yakuza.
The problem is there's no REASON to gitgud unless you want to beat previously mentioned Arcade Smeagol. The fight system is underutilized. You spend way more time training by yourself than fighting.
Shenmue's combat is just dumbed down Virtua Fighter.
Yakuza's combat can feel floaty but the latest games with the new jank engine is really good and feels impactful.
I want Shenmue 3 to have gameplay similar to Yakuza. I loved the first 2 games a lot but they were sometimes very frustrating, especially the first one
Yes, it would be that easy japs are definitely known for preserving their games/assets
japanese companies definitely didn't delete their assets when they were done with the game that's why we have the amazing silent hill HD collection
and that's why kingdom hearts, shadow of colossus, metal gear solid HD had to be reversed from retail code with no references
and how is yakuza's "charge bar for the same long cinematics into QTE" better?
Shenmue 1 has better atmosphere but Shenmue 2 is better in terms of gameplay
Gameplay wise it is better though, Yakuza has better mid-fight QTE cinematic moments and set pieces but the combat itself is not as fun
why do people keep saying that yakuza and shenmue are the same thing? Shenmue is a much slower paced, realistic, take in the detail of the world around you, every NPC can talk to you, night/day cycle with a revenge story that doesn't involve everyone wanting to kill you.
Yakuza is much more fast paced, less detailed with less interactivity and much more in your face japanese humor. Even the main protagonists from both games have very little in common with each other in terms of back story and characterization
I hope so.
they are literally the same game tho
no
Who would win in a fight between Kiryu and Ryo?
Both are about some muscular asian dude goofing around in an open-ish world and fighting bad guys. I guess so; it's kind of like saying Gothic 2 and Witcher 1 are the same game.
They really are different.
Kiryu would smack the shit out of Ryo and Lan Di
ryo hazuki doesn't look very muscular
and yakuza isn't very open world to be honest. Shenmue let's you explore whereas Yakuza punishes you for trying to explore by throwing 5-6 goons that chase you around every 45 seconds or less
Everyone knows Chinese martial arts beats Japanese martial arts. Lan Di would wreck them both.
one of the most obvious scams ever
I was kinda hoping for a non-canon fight in the Colosseum of the yakuza games between Kiryu, and Ryo, even though that would make no sense at all.
Yu Suzuki would never scam us. He's my hero
My zoomer sense in tingling.
Yakuza isn't anywhere near as QTE orientated as Shenmue, in Shenmue it's a core part of the game and mandatory for much of it.
It baffles me how there were no Shenmue easter eggs in the entire Yakuza series. Also no Sonic at all in a fucking Sega game
Sorry was meant for
Yakuza is just a worse version of musou combat + QTEs everywhere, not exactly a high bar to clear
lol no
Not the combat which is what that user was talking about
Damn to be honest I don't like how this game looks. Same with Kingdom Hearts 3
The Chinese martial arts in Shenmue would win over Kiryu's street fighting but it's reall because the martial arts in Shenmue are the equivalent of magic. With all the "hurr i touch your chest, arm, and neck in certain order, now heart explode" bs that Lan Di and his sister can do.
Not that it isn't entertaining.
really*
There are several fighters in Shenmue who would wreck your favorite Yakuza fighters
>and his sister
She isn't Lan Di's sister
I think they have always been shit. The only reason I played both of them to completion was because I had literally nothing else to play.
The fact quicktime events have infested every possible area of gaming has me rather severely butthurt about this shit series for idiots who can't read so they go with video games for their storytelling media.
Can i get a quick rundown? Everything in the second game led me to believe she was. I'm probably remember it wrong though or just not remembering certain details.
remembering*
shenmue.fandom.com
shenmue.fandom.com
They have different names, I guess? Well there is a chance that he really is Lan Di but I highly doubt that
Remember when ShenmueDojo trolled new/v/ with this
It doesn't look that bad. I'm more concerned about the music and the writing, because these things may not translate well to an indie studio with an overseas publisher.
Same here. I’ll play 2 closer to 3’s release.
Cinematic trash and non-gameplay based development is the current standard because of this worthless FLOP of a franchise poisoning a generation with shit taste and making them want movies for video games.
Fuck everyone that supports this travesty of a series. I wish I could hate you to death.
Well Shenmue was originally supposed to be Akira's story
>452219774
fpbp this but unironically based /thread
I'm pretty sure the main character for shenmue was originally going to be a virtua fighter character or something.
Why did he wear the mask?
Not sure, but what little they've shown so far looks pretty fucking bad.
They just need to work on the faces a bit more since the few faces we've seen look a bit more plastic-y than they should. Outside of that the general work on everything looks great. Just look at all the details on the clothes and background textures. Hell, look at the ceiling.
OK help me remember please what was so special about the phoenix mirrors?
Keys to a big door.
I agree. The environmental design looks great and the clothes are nice too. They need to add more details to the faces otherwise the characters will look like toys
>since the few faces we've seen look a bit more plastic-y than they should.
that's actually the downside of using the Unreal 4 engine for games, without a lot of tweaking most Unreal 4 engine games look plastic-y
At least it's a step up from UE3's everything looking like plastic.
i hope you guys realize this isnt the conclusion to the series.
>yfw the price tag of the I+II collection on steam
These games look great but there's no fucking way I'm spending this much on something from 1999.
The jankiness and the voiceover quality alone while certainly charming should dropkick the price by at least 50%
>japs are definitely known for preserving their games/assets
No. They aren't. They have lost source code for SHITLOADS of games over the years. Konami in particular is infamous for it.
Shenmue may have helped make QTE shit popular but Half Life was the one that sowed the seeds of cinematic shit games.
Is Shenmue 3 going to be on Xbone?
Well you can always emulate them. I recommend using Demul
They are worth it desu. 1+2 is like 40 hours long. We live in a time where a 5 hour garbage ass corridor game costs 60 bucks
just ps4 and PC. "ps4 exclusive"
wow it's almost as if he was being sarcastic or something huh that'd be wild though haha
Kiryu can avoid rocket launcher fire and helicopter gatling guns.
Autism: The Post

the voice acting in shenmue is actually a bit better than I remember
the japanese voices are top tier
I think Ryo sounds better in English, he sounds really nice and friendly and expressive in a weird monotone sort of way
They made Shenmue 3 like 15 years ago
The English VA was so bad i went straight to the options and set it to Japanese with English subs.
Yakuza is nothing like Shenmue, people seriously need to stop comparing them. I'm a fan of both but they are different, they have almost nothing in common
Considering 1 and 2 arent, no.
>yakuza and shenmue are different
finally somebody who speaks sense.
Didn't people like Shenmue back then because it looked pretty and the whole explore a big beautifully crafted city was something that wasn't done before? Games like that are abundant now, I really doubt people would play 3 and feel the same way as they did with 1 and 2.
btw gib mirrions of money whitto piggu
Shenmue was never good.
great graphics, incredible soundtrack, charming characters, serviceable story, great fighting, good cinematics back when gameplay and cinematics could blend together
>Games like that are abundant now
Deadly Premonition is the only game that comes to mind that has that whole adventure/detailed open world thing going on. Bethesda games somewhat do the same thing with their characters following schedules but the areas aren't taken to the detailed extreme like Shemnue does and Shenmue offers an experience like you're in an actual town compared to Bethesda games where it feels like the towns are two houses wide.
What else is there besides those games that have a large open area that feels alive, has NPCs with schedules, and lets you freely explore every single building without restriction?
Dumbest shit i've ever heard. If you don't have the model you could just fucking look at the promotional photos and sculpt the face after that until it matches.
What the fuck is so hard with just getting a reasonably good artist to recreate the face that is viewable from tons of angles in promotional art and trailers?
Or just take the dreamcast model which is perfectly fine and scale up the details and make it look more high end. It's doable but still they have only showed the ridiculously ugly picture in the OP.
Who here is ready for the boomer streams where they spend hour and hours gambling?
Found the dumbshit.
Do you think Shenmue invented NPC schedules? The Ultima games had them a decade prior, as did 3d games that came out around the same time as Shenmue. It's a pretty common feature.
Besides, you have very little interactivity in Shenmue, so those NPC schedules are hardly a selling point. Game is completely on rails and feels more like a David Cage game than actual action-adventure game.
>using sarcasm on the internet
It's much more likely that you're an idiot than being sarcastic. Don't do it.
It should at least have kino atmosphere and a great story and ost. Gameplay wise it won’t be revolutionary anymore but it should be a nice slower change of pace from most of the shit out there.
It'll be shit because the gameplay has aged like milk, and they'll piss someone off regardless of whether they update the gameplay or keep it faithful
>Do you think Shenmue invented NPC schedules?
No, I'm saying it's one of the features alongside the full and free exploration of a city (Even if it doesn't give you anything more than the satisfaction of being able to do it), and accurately tying the weather to the realistic weather at the time. It's just a whole bunch of little things coming together to make Shenmue its own thing that really only Deadly Premonition tries to incorporate. I suppose No More Heroes kind of does as well but it doesn't offer the full exploration of the city however you want like Shenmue does.
>Game is completely on rails
And yet Shenmue is still one of a kind
I like the idea of playing Shenmue. I just don't like playing it.
Damn a Shenmue thread with almost 150 replies
I heard the english dub was part of the charm tho
Why didn't the police arrest LanDi?
Shenmue was originally going to be on the Saturn and it was going to be a VF prequel about young Akira.
Was this guy supposed to be a chiyoumen recruiter or something? I hope he makes a return in III.
Remember to buy milk and feed the cat
>april 2019
>when we're barely leaving february
>getting ready to head to Kowloon
>going around town to say my goodbyes
>say farewell to Izumi
>asks Ryo to come over to her place
>he declines
What will it take for Ryo to abandon his self-destructive quest for revenge?
Meme game for meme people.
>same fighting style as Lan Di and his father
He's probably his long-lost retarded brother.
Paid to look the other way.
FUCK FUCK FUCK MIDNA
I hope shenmue 3 doesn't go overboard on self referential moments and memes. Like some dumb sailor minigame or something for a "Where sailors hangout..." achievement or something like that.
isn't LanDi in a mafia style organization? Police wouldn't do jack about it
>yfw 1 year epic store exclusive
