SOUL

Do not insult my wife.

It was 1999 I guess, it was extremely popular despite the art.

looks good to me dude

This is from 1997.

That's a major movie, not a low budget porn game for PC.

It was a different time.

The Air anime was high budget and still looked like this.

I really liked the style of CLANNAD to be honest, it was goofy but at the same time charming.

It's less about the art looking good than it is what it represented back when it was released in the early 2000s, when VNs sold as much as 200k copies.

It's not like evetybody the same year used the very same style
Speaking of which, this is from a 2014 game, how come it looks so different yet so similar?

>CLANNAD
That's Kanon, though.

same style anyways

It was passable. Eventually you don't even notice the badness.

My wife Nagisa is so beautiful.

I miss hair intakes.

This, there's nothing better to add volume to the hair

Is Clannad even worth playing still? It's on my Steam wishlist.

>used to

Sure. Grab it on the next sale though since it hits 60% off routinely.

Is the slice of life relatable/immersive or they just play the usual tsundere/kuudere etc tropes over and over?

How was this ever acceptable?

Attached: 1511996805769.png (640x400, 27K)

Quite possibly the ugliest mainstream Anime aesthetic. Nothing before or after is as bad.

it's good alright
dont ask too much questions

That image really does nit apply to 90s VNs. They are by a very wide margin the best looking ones. Famous anime industry names worked on VNs back then. To think that they are basically dead in Japan at thus point... ;_;

The 90s had the best videogames and the best anime videogames too.

ayy lmao

I actually prefer this art to the updated art in the PS2 version. They look so sweet and innocent, but when they go evil mode, shit's scary. I nearly had a heart attack when Rena's eyes went all glossy.

lmao fuck no, I actually lived through the 90's unlike you gen z retards

Attached: doge_raffing.jpg (640x640, 63K)

is it true that VNs are on their way out?

Time to destroy that faulty model with some actual corpus of animu faces
And my pic is still shit, because many times they are emoting heavily or seen from very weird angles

Attached: pseudoTimeline.jpg (3790x2772, 3.55M)

No

that was already considered shit art back then. shit art sometimes gets good rep.

same goes for higurashi

What happened to Itaru Hinoue during Little Busters? She improved drastically from Key's previous work.

Attached: nGOtmabmChhnyrm.jpg (1280x720, 260K)

Are you implying that looks bad?

And you still have shit taste

It's can be quite immersion breaking though.

Attached: rena_fingers.png (640x478, 167K)

>implying the 80's weren't god tier for giving us Slayers and Rance

Haha but you had no way whatsoever of accessing 90s visual novels. They were neither imported consistently nor were they adapted to any anime. I lived through the 2000s and barely read any VNs back then because I played video games.

In Japan it's undisputable. Only big companies like Light and Key, and some lesser ones are still around. You get at most 2 or 3 relevant titles per month, the rest being 100 per cent porn. EGS (japanese vndb) used to get 500+ votes for important titles in early 2010s, 1000+ easily back in early 2000s, now at most a couple titles break out of 200 votes every year.
Several writers went to the LN market too, like Maruto (white album 2, working on saekano), Kinugasa (Akatsuki no Goei, working on classroom of the elite now), Wataru Hino, Sakurai Hikaru (WAB series, now works on FGO)... big names like Looseboy just disappeared from the face of the earth. Nitro+ only churns out Shimokura works instead of Haganeya Jin, Narahara, Urobuchi (who obviously left VNs a long time ago), etc.
You gotta love how VNs can be so deeply influential to otaku culture in general while having such a small userbase. The term tsundere came from a visual novel even (cosmos no sora ni).

>Eventually you don't even notice the badness.
Actually this is what sticks in my mind more then anything else ever. For a long time I was so fucking put off by that style I dismissed it out of hand. But it kept on coming up. So eventually I gave it a shot and powered through some of it. And to my utter fucking astonishment eventually I actually got into it and enjoyed the finale just fine. And the second version of the anime (skipped the first) put me off all over again, and once again by the end I genuinely enjoyed it.

I guess it's no different then when I went back and replayed NES/SNES games for the first time in 14 years, it took a while to get back into it and then suddenly it clicked and I didn't even think about it anymore and enjoyed the shit out of them. But the style is just so off putting to me normally not merely "primitive" yet my brain still got used to it, made it stand out more.

>excel saga
You fucking what, that's definitely Gourry from Slayers. And I loved both that one and Excel Saga also fuck you though for mixing them up.

Big companies like Key, Alicesoft and Yuzusoft are safe. The smaller companies are all slowly dying though. Overall trend for years has the market shrinking. Their profit margins are so low that a bad selling release can cripple your company, and two bad releases in a row is more than enough to kill most of them. Sprite was huge and they're shutting down next month.
English market is even worse. There was a boom when Steam first started allowing VNs. That has since dried up in part from the novelty being over and Steam has started to ban shit again.

biased shit. reeks of moepig

90s shojo characters were sophisticated and they had big influenced on other media. like yazawa ai's art. that image literally lacks non-moeshit stuff especially after 90s

Coloring is easier now

>Alicesoft
Let's see about that in a couple of years without it's workhorse Rance.

it's not like there was much choice back then. either it was shovelware vn game or nothing

SOUL

That's why I'm saying it's shit, lacking in amazing designs from shoujo or hentai. Also it's anime-only, so no manga or VNs

Attached: marmm.jpg (1600x1182, 343K)

60s and 80s are the best
t. someone who doesn't watch anime

There was more choice than ever when Kanon was released.
