can anyone expand on this? how is this possible while letting you still aim a pistol at each individual enemy and headshot them, all the decals and shit, the ai, it must be like a fake bullshit crowd of like 100 that acts as a single unit, multiplied 100 times?

The teaser trailer footage was in-game, including the legion at the end, and the enemy number will scale depending on your hardware.
You're not supposed to fight ALL of them and it's more about getting that Starship Troopers "yepp, you're fucked" feeling of overwhelming odds so a few thousands more or less probably won't really matter in the end, not to mention that it will only happen in a few maps while most will be the same type of game like the rest of the series.
The number is also not too farfetched given that Ikusagami managed to put 65000+ enemies on the screen at once almost 15 years ago on a PS2, although through tons of trickery.

My guess would be either tons of LOD trickery and impostors that all share the same AI of one unit so a thousand enemies all actually count as parts of one single entity or it'll end like in the Lego Lord of the Rings game where shit is hitting the fan around you and you're actually just fighting a couple of enemies and can pick out some of the flock but will never be able to properly annihilate the entire horde: youtube.com/watch?v=439JBhVqyos (skip to 3:00)

Imagine Doom but with less emphasis on keycard hunts and labyrinth-esque level design and more on enemy hordes, enemy wave design, weapon management, "dancing with the enemies"/enemy juggling and comedy.
