Essentially. Looking at it now it doesn't seem that weird for a Sonic spin off game gimmick, but you have to remember at the time the game came out it was only three years after Sonic '06, and Unleashed was only half liked, so the series' reputation was still very much on shaky ground. Then when people saw yet another big dumb gimmick they reacted less than favorably.
From what I've seen and heard the game itself is actually not bad for a wagglan gimmick title and an overall improvement over Secret Rings. Never had a chance to play it myself either but it looks alright I guess. I just remember how people lost their minds over it when the first promo pictures surfaced. Any new Sonic game was a shitstorm back then. It wasn't until Colors that things started to stabilize again. For a while, anyway.

That's what I'm saying, yeah. People were just completely averse to any sort of gimmick or deviation from the norm after games like '06 and ShadowTH. Can't say I blame them entirely, but yeah, all things considered, a sword is the least out there thing Sonic's been stuck with over the years.
