The atmosphere is gritty and dark, kinda like Berserk, Bastard!!, or many of the 90's fantasy media.

It's not edge for edge sake though. It does it for world building and it does a great job. The game has a very oppressive, foreboding tone to it and everything you do and encounter. It's the only game I've ever played where I'd give this kind of stuff a pass because it generally takes the sexual overtones seriously (with a few exceptions that aren't rape related).
