From a gameplay wise yes, it made the painful have more going on. But from a story perspective it was awful. Brad would NEVER have taken the time to go the places he could and find the friends available to him. Brad would have speed ran that shit and never bothered with a single distraction, which makes much of the gameplay dissonant to the story.

Meanwhile Buddy doesn't even really think she wants a single companion, which makes perfect sense. And while she is not relateable to most people how she feels is not hard to empathize with. The only people that think Buddy was acting crazy are people who have a very low emotional IQ. Especially when so many of those people had no issues with Brad's choices in the painful.

After you recruit party members, they basically stop existing unless they are involved in Buzzo shenanigans or the very end of the game

Honestly I think it's for the best. You can still learn about the party members and their story, but they're disconnected from the main story which is what actually matters. Ultimately, the plot of Painful is about Brad, not Harvey or Bo. Terry is the only character who really gets anywhere, because he's the first party member you get, the first decision in the game, and the main "joke character" that if you cling onto will bring you massive rewards.
I thought it was pretty grey overall. The fact that the game never tells you who was right or who was wrong UNTIL JOYFUL LOLOLOLOLOL helps it more be a ground for discussion rather than having its own opinions.

The game quite literally tells you that Brad was a good person, or rather Bernard does, before plunging you into an anticlimactic and dumb final boss.
I think the scene alone with Brad at the start teaching Buddy how to kill, and then the He's My Dad scene was enough. You don't need additional info on whether or not Brad was good or bad, this stays within territory of Painful. His actions were morally scrupulous but he cared a lot for Buddy and only wanted the best, and genuinely loved her.
Rando is honestly an awesome character. His design is so simple, yet so great. He also functions as the other side of the coin to Brad's issues, so him turning out to be Dusty made for a great ending.

Marty was never a "changed person", nor did the game ever try to tout him as a good guy. He was still a horrible person and a rapist, but now he's here with Buddy. Just because he isn't hurting her now doesn't mean he won't down the line. Brad being flung into a rage upon seeing the two together was a justified reaction from his character.
Even though Marty is obviously attempting to redeem himself for what he does, and is wrought with remorse, that doesn't make him a good boy. He still gets pummeled into a pulp before being utterly annihilated before Brad, justice well served in the latter's eyes.
I don't necessarily agree with this, it only happens at the very end of the game when Brad is being confronted by everything. Brad's wild, uncontrollable desire to protect Buddy and redeem himself as well as all of that rage being unleashed onto his father was an important scene that helped make the ending of the game so good, when Buddy claims that Brad only hurts her and does terrible things, even though Brad only wants the best.

Brad may be addicted to Joy, and Joy warping his perception of what's going on thanks to hallucinations, but Brad is very much a product of the world and his experiences. Buddy is just a boring megalomaniac who wants to kill everyone in sight for no reason other than she can. Brad is out on a quest to protect someone, and the game never tells you whether or not what they're doing is right. Buddy is just plain psychotic and every character in-universe reflects on this.
The dumb easy mode meme was hilarious, I loved it. But honestly, I'm not sure how. Painful integrates a lot of its story into the gameplay, and because of this a lot of things have more impact. The Joy Mutants are scary in Painful because they can instantly kill any party member, not just because they're tanky. It's kinda lost on Joyful.
I dunno, Joyful just needed more to call its own. Joy Mutants' designs as well as some other things didn't really work as well as they did in Painful. That's not to say Joyful is bad, it's just very different in terms of writing but the gameplay is still the same, they don't mesh well together. Still loved it though.

It looked alright, especially the sprite for the joy mutant at the end of the demo was very well crafted. However, I found the humour to be a miss, not sure why. Buddy is just as much a product of her world as Brad is. Buddy is not megalomaniac or psychotic. Buddy was raised by a man who taught her to kill people, that if you do not murder you will be murdered. She learned things from uncles who told her she was not only special but can save the world, that she is important. With the knowledge that she must kill or be killed, knowing she must save the world what would you expect of her?

Even the men she ran away with, who promised her so much, she still suffered. No matter where she went, she suffered at the hands of others. Brad, despite his best intentions hurt her terribly.
Walk around in the Joyful without a mask and tell me her killing others is not self defense. You cannot. You doubt Buddy as a character because you do not take the time to understand her or her struggles. Brad is easy to understand. You don't need to have been beaten by your dad or forced to rape your sister to know that it fucks you up. And wanting to save your daughter is not a hard sell to almost anyone. Buddy is not an easy sell, because her story is not only a hard one to hear, but a unique one.

When Buddy tells her real father she wants his throne it is after that father sent a creature to kill her, and even directly told her he would end her life. You tell me she is psychotic. I think you are being cruel.

Buddy is straight up built to be unlikable. Brad is relatable and we root for him, Buddy is a damaged asshole and she's very rude to best boy Rando so she's very easy to hate.

Considering how Brad acted when it came to Sticky, it had to have occurred at least a little bit to Brad that Buddy would have just been a fuckbox to most people. Of course, he probably wouldn't be considering incest or other things like who actually gets to be with Buddy, what the effects of her being "owned" by an army would be, how they're planning on protecting her, etc.
Personally, I didn't like the Joyful that much because it just didn't do things as well as Painful did. Painful's story is so beautifully woven into its gameplay, Joy addiction being the most obvious and perhaps best example.

I'm replaying it for like, what, the tenth time right now? It's a great game. I can't say I'll ever get bored of it. It's one of my top games, up there with Hotline Miami.

The joyful wasnt bad, it had the ground work to be great. It was just way too short, had a off story and buddy was unlikeable. Buddys naturally higher speed and different jump made her feel different from brad right off the bat and the game could have been a true good sequel if he had spent more time on it. I mean the enemies and bosses he made for the game were extremely cool and memorable everyone remembers the big licoln and the soup. I have a feeling though that ninja tears will ether be amazing or awful with no inbetween

I'm replaying pain mode right now, I've been joyless so far but I suppose there's no reason to. Current party is Birdie, Olan, and Mad Dog. Olan is awesome but I'm considering swapping him for RT. Who do you guys like to use?

I go birdie, Nern and Mad Dog/ST. Birdie for heals and oil, Nern for SP/TP battery, backup healing and status effects (pissed is the best one in the game), and then Mad Dog or RT for Fire damage. RT is probably better, SP characters seem generally better than TP, and RT can inflict poison too, but I like Mad Dog's design more.

Bo, Fly, and Geese thompson is the best party you can have mechanically.

In my first playthrough I used Mad Dog, I like his design more, too, but maybe I should try swapping Mad Dog for RT. I'm sad Buckets is a joy addict. Is there no downside to using joy in a pain more run? Other than the novelty of course.

Bo makes all healing items moot and also can stun all enemies. Fly can hurt all enemies and also status them. Geese has insane single target dps for bosses. That party can wipe any fight in a few turns with ease.
